"firedome", with last year 1979 non-shaded avocado GM 1-18s washer with the rare late model SOAK cycle instead of KNIT cycle! And matching dryer!

Now these babies can keep company with my Harvest Gold '75 Crown 1-18 window machine.

All I have to say for now is thanks a lot to those who helped make these finds possible and who welcomed me again to there home! I still didn't make it home as I am visiting another great member of our club but I'll post more tomorrow night if I don't get there too late!

I got other cool non-washer stuff in that trip and I was treated by a king by my hosts! Thanks Roger, Sue, Walt, Steve and Mark, and thanks again to Paul!

to have you Phil, as always, as well as a great deal of fun!

The '79 washer has a bit of rust along the cabinet bottom, so yesterday drilled out a couple of the screws holding the cabinet to the base, now it's off and the sanding and repaint begins today! Also has a stuck clutch needing to be addressed later on. Such interesting machines!

I still have to figure what's wrong with the 1965 washer, either the timer or the motor... I did replace the capacitors and the hoses on the washer but I have to look further. I'll test the motor with the top from a parts machine to see if the motor is fine. I'm pretty sure there's a problem with the timer. It does advance but even when not connected to the washer's cabinet (motor and fill valves), it buzzes after the fill period (and there's no buzzer in that tat machine).

The solenoid for the detergent dispenser is working and that doesn't seem to be causing the buzzing sound. Hopefully, nothing shorted in the timer...

As for the dryer, it did require new belts and I haven't did anything else than replacing them. I still have to connect it to see how it does!

I also got something else that I still have to try! It's new and never been installed but I wouldn't be surprised if it also needs attention...

The motor still hums with the other top/timer, so I'm guessing that's the problem...

While Phil was here in NY....

We played with the gold '75 1-18 and found a real bottom gusher - not the bellows but upon pulling the agitator &c found it was a badly corroded and deteriorated tub seal. Phil is working on finding the part. Agitator and tub are in nice condition. See pics:

Meanwhile back at the '79 1-18 ranch... (pic 3)

'79 1-18 innards and tub appear pretty clean.
Someone applied red gasket sealer type stuff to the plastic top ring for some reason, to be determined.

Cabinet was removed, rust sanded away, treated with cold galvanizing, and re-painted. The green doesn't match but this will be a regular driver and the sheet metal is well preserved against further rusting.

The clutch appears stuck and that will be the next item to be dealt with!

I did some work on my 1965 washer, but it will need more... So far, I fixed the timer which was bad, probably because of the motor that also seems bad. I also replaced the dual motor capacitors. The motor turns freely by hand but hums loudly and doesn't turn by itself in either direction.

I used a small screw and a part of the brass bracket from a broken light socket that I had kept for parts to replace the broken rivet in the timer.

I'll still need to fix or replace the "small load" solenoid as it doesn't operate but I'll concentrate on getting the motor to work or a replacement motor first!

Phil, that cook top is gorgeous.  I'm curious as to what all the buttons are for other than the numeric ones used for setting power levels.

I haven't done anything with the cooktop yet! But I can tell you it has button to set the clock and timer, the two left surface units can also be timed to shut off automatically just like in Touch-N-Cook ranges.

Here's the link to the instruction manual for this model.

I had to clean the selector switches on the WCI-65 as dead insects had blocked the contacts, the motor does work and the washer agitates but only at low speed (4 pole) and on both wash and spin selections of the timer.

I have never seen something like that, what's happening?? I'll have to keep investigating!

Can somebody explain me how to wire it directly so it works in both speeds and both directions?

It does spin on "agitate normal speed" and it does agitate slowly on "agitate-low speed" and in "spin low speed". I'll have to check the wiring again and compare it with the wiring of my white WCI-65 machine.

The wires in the cabinet are all connected to the correct place, it looks like the motor has a weird problem. There's a wire that seems burnt and the motor got very hot in just a few seconds of operation...

The windings also seem quite dark... It looks like I will need a new motor!

At least, the controls work now, I have tested the top of the turquoise machine on my white one and it works fine now! The small load solenoid works on all settings (the top needed to be connected to the washer to make it work on the two "Regular" settings). The timer that I fixed works on every setting and so do the automatic advance from Soak to Wash and to the Extra Rinse feature. Both dispensers also work fine.

Now, I have to figure something for the motor, does anybody know if a newer two-speed motor will work with the terminals to the unbalance switch bypassed? I know the newer ones don't use start capacitors and were designed to work with the Sure-Spin clutch but I'm wondering if they could be used with minor modifications?

Or does anybody have a 1965-66 motor from a Rapidry machine?

The replacement Delco motor has a different part number as it was used for 1965-66 Canadian Rapidry washers. I just installed it and it seems to work fine.

Note that it says "Made in Canada" and by General Motors Diesel in London Ontario.

yes we got lucky and had a fine time in the process! PhilR's and both of my 1:18s need further "massaging", but finding and fixing faults in machines, whether car or appliance, is fun! Especially when the payoff is a working machine!
Hope you'll share pics and progress with your FDs too!

Great turn around of a classic washer that most anyone else would consider junk and send away to be scrapped. Great save! See what just a little attention can do.

I thought the dryer would be an easy fix but the wiring has been messed up, the door heater had been removed and the inner door was all rusty from the condensation. I used many parts from the white dryer to fix it and now I'm wondering if I should fix the white one, keep it for parts or make it a regular vented dryer as I think I have most parts to do that.

Here's the turquoise dryer that I just fixed, will decide what to do with the white one tomorrow!

Wow, it looks better than the pile of parts on the floor I saw yesterday... LOL  Geez, you really did get these beauties back up and running quickly.  Further shame on me for the '57 GE that I got in 2012 and still have done less than nothing to  LOL

Congratulations Phil, they are outstanding!!

I wouldn't completely condemn the white dryer - I think your idea of turning it into a Flowing Heat model sounds good.

Laundry day!

Click to watch!

Washing whites in the Turquoise washer.

The Turquoise washer is washing whites and the white one is washing blue and green!

Paul, the post-1960 Filtrator dryers are also "Flowing Heat", at least that's what the control panel says! Instead of flowing through the dryer once, the heated air flows in a loop in it. The hot air, instead of being exhausted, gets cooled by the condenser to remove the moisture and it's heated again before entering back into the dryer drum.

The early Filtrators like yours (and my 1957) were more of the clothes-broiling variety!
