Why does the washer door swing in the opposite direction of most -- if not all -- other makes of FL machines?  That would be a deal-breaker for me in my current laundry room.

Because that's how they made it.  The brief Amana version also opened the same way.  And that Amana had an onboard heater to raise wash temp to 140 degrees.

SQ laundromat machines one has seen also open to the right. It is just how Alliance does things I suppose.

Right Hinged FL Washer Door

combo52's profile picture

Hi Ralph, the question should be WHY is everyone else building washers with the door hinged the WRONG way, most people are right handed and a right handed door is easier to walk up to and open [ ever notice that RH door refs are considered normal in most of the world ? ].

You raise an interesting point and many times the SQs RH door has caused us to have to reconfigure laundry rooms, but you would also be surprised how often we sell a SQ FL washer just because it is RH hinged. Many times it has been when we were replacing a MT Neptune where the door was hinged on the right.

I do think the best way to build a FL washer would be one that has a reversible door and all dryers should have a hamper door except stack models which should also be reversible.

If I ran the world it would be a better place, LOL.

my opinion.....the Westinghouse with the drop down door on the washer always seemed best...for loading and unloading....

granted newer machines are auto fill....the weigh-to-save door was a unique option

John, at our previous house, the SQ FL would have been perfect, but currently a left hinged washer is what we need.  I agree that the doors should be reversible or, like Martin suggested, drop-down a la Westinghouse.  If all dryers and FL washers had drop-down doors, placement would never be an issue.

My Asko and Miele both are hinged the same way.  Awkward since my dryer has to sit on the right of that door.  I've gotten used to it over the last almost 20 years.

Yes I have loaned my SQ

to a friend and it really doesn't fit her laundry room as the dryer sits to the right. It should be reversible or drop down! If I ran the world it would be.

Do any current FL washers offer a reversible wing door? It would be possible to do for sure, but more complicated with the lock assembly...

As for the hamper door dryers I used to think they were great, less socks hit the floor... But since replacing an old Kenmore with the hamper door with a newer Cabrio with a swinging door, I have realized at how much easier it is to reach items in the rear of the dryer. The hamper door is likely called that because it 'hampers' access to the rear of the drum!

My mom's '67 Snorge dryer had a hamper door that folded all the way down flat against the front of the cabinet.  I hate to admit it, but that was a smart design.

Quick peek and very unscientific survey shows most commercial front loaders(Wascomat, IPSO, Dexter, etc..) open to the right. In fact have never seen a laundromat dryer that opened any other way.
