Today was a special day. I found and bought a working Maytag A502 in mint condition for $40.00. The guy acted like he was asking a lot for it. Will post pictures as soon as I can. The dial is so cool, dark gray plastic with lime green and lemon yellow markings. Black bakelite agitator with chrome lint filter and black plastic softener dispenser.

Was this the TOL model for that time? I remember the origional center dial Maytags they were real nice. The thing I didn't like about the later ones was that they only provided a 10 minute wash. I always thought it should have been longer. But those machines were built like tanks nothing like what they make today. Peter |

No this is dead center, MOL, I guess the pre-1966 version of the Maytag A606 workhorse. No lighted panel, no bleach dispenser. There were two models above it, the 902 and the 702 that I covet, but this machine was in such good condition and from what I've learned from you folks, especially with a beginning collection, is that having an extra machine for parts is a good idea when the big Kahuna shows up. I'll never forget, being at a friend's house for a sleepover where they had one of these models. I'd never seen a Maytag before and when I lifted the lid(and defeated the damn safety switch)I remember how fascinated I was to see a full load of laundry with a thin layer of white suds circling effortlessly, SILENTLY around a white porcelain tub with no agitator visible. Compared to the rock and roll of our GE Filter-flo with its muscle-beach activator and loud gurgling water chunking action, this was a minuet at a ladies tea-dance. I didn't understand how this machine could possibly do the job. Here's the whole model line that another member posted months ago: |
