Our 2nd annual Vintage Halloween meet up and 2016 gathering took place at Als Emporium and home and we welcomed old friends back as well as new ones. We had a few new appliances, vacs & mixers to play with along with all the favorites such as the Wall of Keymatics and Lux. Our friends started to arrive on friday afternoon and as per we where fashionably late with the "To Do" list so many thanks to Mark flying in from Sitges who had a new Sebo placed in his hand and Richard a screwdriver (too early for the drink) for the gazeebo`s and garden furniture...

First test wash and up for loading was the AEG Lavamat badged Zanussi Liberation recently aquired by Al, this was a machine he remembers his aunt having so special memories, up top is the Alba record deck I had earlier picked up for Gary Electron in order to play the opening song and of course what every twintubber needs a pair of sturdy black rubber gloves for all those boilwashes.

Saturday morning and others start to arrive, the weather was mixed so luckily the two gazeebos over the patio proved a welcome relief from the October drizzle - and a great place to work on appliances and to sit and gather later.

Well no sheets where harmed, dragged around, floated on top or failed to come clean in the the recently renovated Hotpoint 1501 from 1966 (Hotpoint 2nd Toploader) we witnessed underwater SpiraClean action, 95d boilwash with dilution rinse, spray rinse and final static rinse, topped off with a 1050 spin and straight on the line.

Wow, that looks like one heck of a gathering!  Thanks for sharing the photos, Mike.

I have to parrot what Eddie said about the Hoover CrystalJet - I don't recall any of my UK branch of the family owning a dishwasher before the late 80s, so it's a real treat to see one like this.

Thanks Eddie, always a great time whether its 2 or twenty (or a few more as in the museum meet ha ha) ..yes the Hoover is quite rare and different, very modern on the outside with the spinning baskets inside.

Morning Hass, yes Matchbox Paul is total dedication to the cause of detailing etc and hopefully we will have the English Electric washing away soon!!

Hi Paul, yes always a great crowd and thankfully get stuck in with help and repairs etc, you would be right about dishwashers being late to the scene over here, probably the last appliance to make the popular vote.

Hi Darren, many thanks for bringing over the English Electric twintub and who to know that the washer Darren Aitch found nearby was a "match of the era" catch up when ya back !!

Hi John, would be great to see you over here on a visit, let us know your dates and will have a get together.

Hi Steve, great to hear from you, cant believe its 15 yrs since we all first met up...yes those Hotpoint toploaders are a bit of a UK institution, the most popular toploaders sold here, first launched in 1964, a more compact version of the GE filterflow. The UK models had a 10lb washload with SpiraClean agitator with filterflow pan on top, first 3 models had a vitreous enamel outer tub then they went to a polypropylene outer tub set on a rigid tripod frame, 3 kw heater as well with set temperatures for cold through Warm 40d, Hand Hot 50d, Very hot 6od and nr boiling 95d. The first 3 models had an 850 rpm spin speed then where upped to 1050rpm for the subsequent 8 models which made production up to the mid ninties, the model finally being replaced with a slimline vertical access toploader in 1998.

Heres a few pics...

Thanks Mike,

Made until '97! I don't know what it is, however I just love those things! I am thinking that agitator creates better roll over than the larger tub US Hotpoint of the '60's!
Great spin speed, too. I would love to HEAR one in action. Solenoids ?

Thanks Mike------

the agitation seems much more aggressive that the US version of that agitator. Or maybe it really isn't the same one. The US one is so lame if you watch it the clothes seem to never roll-over! Love this machine!

Meeting Up

vacbear58's profile picture
Much as we love our vintage machines of all shapes and sizes, its as much about the people (of all shapes and sizes LOLOLOL) and what a great bunch it was. Wonderful to see old and now dear friends again and great to meet newcomers who hopefully will become new friends too. When Mike and I set out in this project 2 1/2 years ago it was with the hope that not only would be have somewhere to restore, display and use the machines but somewhere for us all to come together to share the enjoyment and our knowledge of them and I am very glad to say it has worked out very well.

We look forward to welcoming new international friends next year, it will be a pleasure to roll out the welcome mat for you.

Al

Hoover Autojet

vacbear58's profile picture
I have a correction for Mike in his original posting, in that it was a Hoover AUTOJET that we used, the Crystaljet came much later.

As far as I am aware this was only the second outing of the Autojet since Mike got it, the last time was in, believe it or not, 2010. here is a video that I took at the time, we are not ready to take a chainsaw to the door of the Hoover yet.

The link below is to the thread of that meet in 2010 (when we were younger and prettier) - those great times at Mike's became the template of every good meet, machines, cake, gallons of tea, and good folks

This is the icing on the cake and such a great recipe for the future . I still have no idea at all where the time goes as it flys by SO quickly
I appreciate how much work you both put into the weekends and the time it takes to prepare for everyone's arrival .
You have brought so many people together and enabled us to build on some great friendships and have a great time and lots of fun together . Many thanks again Darren

Chris checks out the Philips TopTwin ready for action..the Hoover single tub is used as a sink drain for the fast flowing top loaders and machines in the middle bank, hence all the hoses, and has a cold fill pipe for twinny rinsing.

HELP !!! Newbie here, sorry if I don't know where to ask

Hi all, My name is Steve I'm from Long Island. I always try to repair, use and keep working old appliances, cars, etc. Because I feel they are superior to everything made these days.

Have a problem with my 1969 MayTag clothes washer model A206. The timer has burnt contacts. Timer motor is fine, which was rebuilt with BRASS gear by DAVE in Pennsylvania. Now the timing mech. is no good.

OK, the timer was replaced back in 1985 once already with an MTS rebuilt model # 2-4454 Kingston DIV Kokomo Ind.
The problem I have is that the replacement of WP204454 or 204545 is not exact. My timer has 18 spade connectors on only ONE side of the casing including the two timer motor contacts. The replacement has connectors on BOTH sides of the casing adding up to I believe 18 as well. I don't know the pin-out. How do I know which wire goes where? Also does anyone have an exact working timer like mine in the photos or know where to get it? You will see two photos of NEW timer first and the rest of the photos my old timer & dial. I heard Kingston made 2 same models of 204454 & 204454-2

Thanks to Al and Mike for putting on another great Wash-In weekend.
Both myself and Rob had a great time - a great opportunity to meet up with folks from throughout the country and see what is new on the scene.

Glad the the 1501 arrived safely in its new home, after Mark worked some of his magic on it. Love the detail of the dial where, when heating, the outer edge glows red - a lovely touch from Hotpoint.

Then the AEG 800HC ..... Zanussi certainly played their cards right with the S-series design, selling as clones under other brands. Solid machine and glad that one of these AEG-ussi's has been saved ....

As Mike mentioned earlier, Mathew performed some of his magic and got the motor running and some elbow grease produced a very tidy later series English Electric!

Congrats again to Darren on a great find and thanks again to Al and Mike for making the weekend happen.

Huge apologies Mike

and all contributors to this thread for such a late addition, work has been manic these last few weeks, along with a few family birthdays and there we are I've not chipped in.

So as with everyone else, what a wonderful weekend and thanks to Al and everyone who contributed to all having such a great time.

And as you can see from my smiles in some off the photos, how thrilling it was to first be surprised and then to get inside the wonderful English electric liberator washing machine, fantastic to see one spin into life after what must be going on 40 years since my aunt had one.

Well scroll to last weekend and mums birthday, the subject was raised, do they remember this machine, well no, `did I have one of those, no don't remember that, I did have an ariston', well they did have the colston xd850 washer dryer after the liberator, but that was as close to ariston that they ever got lol. Mum said how on earth can you remember that. I dispair, I bet everyone on this site remembers every detail of the machines their families had and probably all the neighbours too, it's not even like she doesn't know about my fasinations growing up.

Anyway, just can't wait to get back to working on it and hopefully have it washing again soon.

Mathew
