I'm in the market for a 1960's stereo console. Zenith, Magnavox are favored, but not written in stone. Must be modern, clean lined. I am not partial to "Early American", "French Provincial", etc. I've seen heart stopping ones on ebay, in looks AND price. So if you'd happen to come across one that is reasonably near and priced, please give me a heads-up. Thanks!

Why would I want one? Because I was into sixties swank...way before MAD MEN came about.
The earliest console I can remember at home was a a late fifties, blond affair from Sears (Silvertone) It wasn't very big, but it could crack plaster when cranked up. Same as in pic, but blond finish.
Around 1967, it was replaced with this German bad boy, Phono-Sonic Koronette Diamant. Whew! Say that 10 times real fast! We're talking high glitz here. The entire cabinet seemed to have been dipped in molten Lucite, it was that shiny. When you opened the (keyed) center doors, you were greeted with LP storage that would swing down. But, a slight push on either end and it would revolve, revealing lit, mirrored bar, complete with a goblet rack, and a two tiered shelf for you liquors. Covered in crushed red velvet of course. In the late 70's it was replaced with a Sony component system. I recently saw a Koronette for sale on Craigslist, they wanted 500 smackers.
The finish on ours was a lot darker. This model was produced solely for the American market.

we had one like this growing up......ours was a color TV.....I remember turning it on, and having to wait for everything to come to life and light up.....
one reason to have one was the sound was unbelievable, major bass tones, and on something like this, even the TV was piped through all the speakers.....you didn't need surround sound....external speakers were optional...some were matching end tables... I think on this one, I would try to convert the TV into a flat screen.... CLICK HERE TO GO TO Yogitunes's LINK on Newjersey Craigslist |

All offers considered. Item is located in Stamford, NY, approximately one hour from Albany. As you can see from the photos the console is in amazing condition. The radio is in working condition as is the record player, however I believe the needle should be replaced. CLICK HERE TO GO TO ken's LINK on Albany Craigslist

I'd try to hold out for a higher end tube model. I always kinda felt that the early solid state stuff was pretty marginal and by the time SS started to improve, people were buying components so the consoles got short shrift.
Of course with any of these hollow or solid state there will likely be some restoration needed. Capacitors will be questionable and speakers don't always age gracefully either. I have always been a component guy, the only 'console' I might be able to live with is one of these nifty JBL Paragon's. It is only a speaker so you have to provide electronics elsewhere. Alas I'd have to scratch off a few winning tickets...

Martin, I remember those old sets. Like anything with tubes, it took a few minutes to "warm up". Remember the dot when you turned it off? Our DuMont color console had 3 color buttons in front. Each button had 3 hues on it. You could easily tune in the perfect color. Unlike now that you have to go through endless menus. |

I have an huge RCA console stereo from the late 70's that must be 10-12 feet long. One of the very last they made, sounds good too! It is really a big one considering it is only a stereo and not a tv too. |

Ive gotten so that I just chalk it up to the fact that people are a**holes. A good example is two weeks ago I saw a local CL ad for "free stuff". I saw a few items in the pics that I could use. I called the number and had to leave a voicemail. Poster did call me back and I got together with him Sunday before last and took a few things. There were some old wood frame storm windows in the back corner of the garage. He asked if I needed any to which I replied that I actually did need one wood storm to replace a missing one on my porch. All of those were too big though.
He explained that his great-grandfather made them years ago and that he had more than a hundred more in another building just down the road. I told him I didn't remember the size I needed but Id measure and if he were available the next weekend Id come back and look through them. He said no problem. He mentioned that someone had told him there was a place in a nearby town that might be interested in them. I replied that I might know of the place he was referring to and that I had been there in the past. I explained it was an architectural salvage business and Id try to get the info for him. Before I left he said if I knew of anyone else who was looking for anything he had there to give them his number. So during last week I got the measurement for the storm I needed and also got the info for the salvage place like I said I would. I called the guy twice before the weekend and left a message both times. I got no call back from him. So all I can figure is he must be an a**hole too. I'm not overly bothered by it as I did get there once and did get the few things I originally wanted. If I have to I'll just make the storm window myself.
