Hi guys,

Well, after nearly 3 months of travelling the oceans, my 20ft container of USA machines arrived safe and sound last week, however not without some dramas of delivery location, but all is fine now.

I don't think I've been so stressed nor had to move so many machines by myself (with David's help of course)

I've attached a couple of pics of the container when it arrived and thought it would be easier to do a video and take you on a guided tour of my collection.

I've not had a chance to test any of the machines beyond the 2 Speed Queen's, that will happen over the next few weeks.

Hope you enjoy.

Cheers
Leon

Leon . . .

. . . so glad you made it home safely and that all your children arrived safely. Your collection is superb. I loved the video as well as the still pictures.

My buddy, John Gibson, and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting you both and talking with you as well as watching you shrink wrap several of those machines. It was a wonderful weekend.

Good luck and happy washing!!!

Hello Leon

An impressive collection by any sense of the word. Looks nice. Can't imagine having a container shipped from the US to Australia. Must have been an undertaking. You mentioned the avocado 906 being a work in progress. What's going on with that, if you don't mind.

How do you deal with the 240/220 > 120/110 conversion for that many machines?

B.

Leon, did I hear correctly

in the video? "Whirlpool Servis Maytag cloned"? Wonders never cease.
Seeing a Montgomery Wards dryer in Australia yet. That'd be like seeing a Holden HZ in the states, or a Simpson.

Beautiful! I love it! I guess you use a voltage converter to run the ones coming from the USA.....
Do not want to be inappropriate but how much shipping to Australia did cost?
We imported our filter flo in the early 90s and it costed a bit....wanted to know about costs today...
Again...wonderful collection!

I can't believe all the work you got already, yes it was a fun experience getting everything wrapped and shipped for both of us, the great thing is that I know that it can be done.

Your collection looks great, can't wait to get down there sometime and see it in person, hopefully later next year.

Glad to see they all made it safely!.. I now have the matching dryer to the Kenmore Washer that appears at 2:42 in the video, so while the set is split up, they are always together right here on aw.org! Hope to see you again soon in the states at another wash in soon

Jerry

Answers to a couple of questions

mayfan69's profile picture

Thanks for the comments guys:

To answer a couple of questions:

Maytag 906 status: Hi Brian, the 906 needs a new brake radial bearing before being fully tested. As to how i'll use the US machines: through a number of step-down transformers. The only machines that have been fully converted to 240V are the two brand new Speed Queen's

'Whirlpool / Servis clones'. Hi Mike, it's actually 'Wilkins Servis / Maytag' cloned machines, not Whirlpool, but I can understand the confusion: too many 'W's.

How much to import? Hi Federico, no it's not too inappropriate: in US dollars, it cost me approximately US$5200 to import the machines via a 20ft container. Keep in mind that's the cost of transport only, the price I paid for the various machines is extra to that cost.

Cheers

Leon

Wow, Leon, that is quite the collection you have there!  If you ever make it back to North America, we should make sure you take back an Inglis or an Eaton Viking machine to get you some Canadian content... LOL

Lovely video - thank you for sharing it with us!!

Leon, that is truly awesome!  Loved the video!

Could I please ask a couple of questions about the electrical conversion?  For the machines that are still designed to run on American power of 120 V 60 Hz, I know you said you have step down transformers, but does the Australian frequency of 50 Hz versus the American 60 Hz cause any issues?  Do induction motors run at 5/6 the intended speed?  Any other issues?

As for the Speed Queens (which I am most interested in) you said that they are converted to 240 V, but what about the frequency -- have the machines been converted to 50 Hz or are they still 60 Hz?

Hey Leon, I was just thinking...I am going to be in Australia next week.  I'll be mostly in Melbourne but I could easily do a Brisbane daytrip if you had a spare couple of hours to show me round your emporium!

Hi Mark
How long are you in Australia?
My partner and I will be in Tasmania on holiday from 1st - 7 Dec, so not sure how that works for you?

Thanks
Leon

Hi Leon

The 8th would be best, especially as you might have some post-holiday laundry to do!  If the 8th doesn't fit with your plans, then I could do the 9th or 11th.  We're heading home on the 12th.

Cheers

Mark
