Hey fellas,

As some of you may remember Volvoguy87 (Dave), elginkid (Wes), and I (Will) have been rebuilding my Maytag 702 set off and on (mostly off) for a few years during my annual visits.  We made great progress this trip... we replaced the damper pads, finished rebuilding the transmission, and got the machine put back together.  Afterwords we tested it with a hose and it washes and drains like a dream.  We were so close to being done, but fell 3 issues short on the washer and still have one problem left on the dryer.

1) We need to replace the light transformer.  We have one of these.  I just ran out of time to get it done.  It doesn't look too hard.

2) I couldn't get the replacement spline to work in the original agitator.  I went to a wringer washer repair in rural Ohio and got 2 varieties of splines they carried.  Sadly neither worked!  They just wouldn't fit the machine.  Any suggestions?  We borrowed a turquoise one, but I really like the black.  I was thinking to find a newer black agitator to just use instead.  Any suggestions?

3) The water valve is shot.  Looks like I need a rebuild kit or to replace the valve.  Any ideas on where to get a rebuild kit or advice on rewiring the machine for a modern replacement?

4) Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a de702?  On a previous visit I replaced the timer and hooked everything back up the way it was.  For some reason the door switch won't stop the drum, however it will turn on the light.  Thanks everyone.

I've attached a few pictures of volvoguy on today's adventure.

Water valve.

The washer is together, the transmission is holding its oil, the tub is holding water, and all seems to be right with the world, except...

The water valve is leaking! The solenoids work, it starts and stops the flow of water into the machine, but it leaks water all over the floor! The hose-end washers are good. The valve body looks to need new seals. Might anyone have some tips on how to do this or, in the mean time, how to replace the 3-solenoid valve with a common 2-solenoid valve?

Dave

Ugh.... Those 3-valve solenoids are a thorn in the side of Maytag owners.  However, it probably just needs a rebuild - John (combo52) might have the parts you need to do that.    It's not that difficult (hey, if I can do it... LOL)

Substituting a 2-solenoid valve will work, but will result in less choices of wash/rinse combinations.

Nice work!

I had a vintage 1988 Maytag with that transmission. Also a 1974 Caprice sedan. A tank. I bought it in 1978 from a GM employee with 60,000 miles on it. very clean car. It had Delco Jack Pac 175 air shocks that were adjustable from the dash.
Too bad rust ate it away to nothing. I had to part with it in 1980. I couldn't even stay dry in it when it rained. It leaked from the windshield onto the seat.

Leaky Water Valve

The valve seats are pretty easy to rebuild using a kit, however the gaskets for the outlet and the thermostatic valve are NLA.  Typically, this is where you'll find these three way thermostatic valves leak.

Kit PN: Robertshaw RK-1000 (two kits needed for the three way valves)

Thanks Ben and Paul. We'll talk to John before we continue and I will look into that kit.

Paul (or anyone)... Do you remember what wash/rinse options are lost with a 2 solenoid replacement?

Mike: Thanks for the complement. My Caprice was a 79 it had been in the family since new (3 generations). I loved the car, but I sold it because of rust/I didn't trust it and was having issues finding what I needed to bring it back to it's glory. I bought a 63 Mercury Comet to replace it. Much more my style, but I do miss the Caprice.

Love the Comet. I had a 64 Falcon Futura and still wish I had it to just go to town. 170/6 and 2 speed Ford-o-matic. I know about rust issues as the Falcon rusted out bad. I did get 18 years on my old Silverado before rust ate the frame, gas tank and it kept going before it just wouldn't pass inspection. You guys are lucky in a no inspection state.

We do have inspections, but if a car is registered as an antique, they become optional.

Interestingly enough, every site I tried only had one rk1000... The demand just isn't there one site told me and they all pull from the same supplier. I had to go to eBay to get 2 from one person. It was the only way to keep shipping from killing me!
