I just put myself through a rather expensive discovery process; in replacing my prematurely-failed "Frigimore" (bought in '99 or '00, bad tub bearings) I thougt, without researching, that "Maytag has always been good, so they must still be." I bought a Neptune 6700, and a 9700 dryer. Soon found out that lots of people had problems w/the new Neptunes, and CU frequency-of-repair rating was among the worst. It's now in my garage w/an ad in the paper. After much more thorough research, I bought a Whirlpool Duet HT from Sears. (The top Duet is a model 9400; the one they make for Sears is a 9460, slightly higher spin speed-1250 r.p.m.) I liked the looks of the Miele except for its small size, but I can't justify $2000 for a washer. They're coming out with a larger one, and I can only guess what that will cost. The Duet sometimes takes time to balance the load for spin-seems a little too sensitive to slight unbalance-but otherwise I'm very impressed. It is top rated by CU, including its repair record. The "lonely" Maytag man is coming over tomorrow re. the dryer (used once) which gives out a rhythmic thumping noise-an imperfection in the drum where it rides on the rollers. I can't imagine them fixing it other than giving me a new drum, or a new dryer. Can't wait to see, but i didn't spend $900 to listen to that racket. If they can't put it right, back it goes to Home Depot, and I'll get a Duet dryer.

Hi! Tumbler, I would just go ahead and have the Maytag Dryer taken back and get the Duet Dryer. I've been checking all of these newer Front-Load Washers and Dryers out and when I'm able to look into another new Set, I'm either going to look into the Duet or the Duet Sport Models, with an Electric Dryer Matched to the Washer.
I like the new Diamond Dust Color, or I would look into the Pewter Color Model Set, since I'm really getting tired of White and Almond on newer Appliances.
Actually if I had it my way, I would love to have the famous Frigidaire Poppy Color on all of my Kitchen and Laundry Appliances.
Good Luck, let us know what happens and what you end up with doing/getting.
Peace and Happy WP Laundry Days, Steve SactoTeddyBear...
Steve: I took the plunge. Home Depot came and got the Maytag Neptune dryer, and I got the Duet matching my new Duet washer. So far, I'd say that they're the best laundry machines going unless one wants to spring for a Miele!. I went w/white, since in my basement laundry room it really doesn't matter, and if I move they'll fit in wherever. I got the high-end Duets sold by Sears-all the bells & whistles. As a refrigeration/comm'l appliance mechanic, I find the prewash very useful. I can't believe how clean this machine gets stuff. Last night I washed & dried a queen-size winter duvet/comforter; tight fit, but it did the job. Note that these are NOT the Kenmore versions; WP makes special models under their name for Sears i.e. the high-end WP is a #9400, the Sears "version" is a 9460 and has a slightly higher spin speed (1250 r.p.m.). Anyway, they work great on all counts. The verdict isn't in on longevity, but from what I'm hearing, that shouldn't be an issue. Hope I'm right, since my experience w/the '99 "Frigimore" I had wasn't too good-it only lasted 6-1/2 years before the tub bearings went out. (Two others I recommended it to had the same experience). Now I just have to sell the Neptune washer....
