Kitchenaid by Hobart had already make a name for themselves even in the 50's. In comparison to any other dishwasher on the market they were clearly the ONLY choice when it came to getting dishes clean. But look at what they had to compare themselves to. You had either an impeller machine, which was very awkward to load and did a relatively poor job on the glasses and upper rack. And then you had the Frigidaire spin tube dishwashers, which also took very careful loading and were not terrific at cleaning either. Even with Kitchenaid you had to know how and what to load on the bottom rack, so that spray could get through to the top rack. Until the patent ran out on Kitchenaid and all the other dishwashers were able to make spray arms, they really had the market sewed up. When the various brands had shower towers and spray arms under the top rack it gave the ability for really random loading on both racks.

I thought these KitchenAids were very quiet compared to the competitors.

I remember my Mother would always point out if someone had a KitchenAid, they were "well off".
