Well, our 1987 Tappan dishwasher went on the fritz about a month ago, when it leaked half its water out onto the floor(I hope the floor isn't rotted out from all the times it has leaked), the bearings in the motor-pump assembly started making some noise, and the drain pump valve started sticking partially open during a wash cycle, allowing the water to drain out as it was shooting water on the dishes. Hope to get it replaced(as well as our loud, thumping 1985 Whirlpool top-mount refrigerator/freezer)with a brand new Roper BOL dishwasher. Does anyone out there know anything about the new Roper dishwashers, are they any good?

Haven't heard anything about Roper DWs, lately. I recall that the low-end Ropers were at the bottom of the ratings in Consumer Reports due to poor water filtering which redeposited soil on dishes. Here's a Quick Recommendations report from this month's magazine. If you're looking for an inexpensive but highly rated DW, you might check out the Amana. Let us know what you wind up getting!

Here's more specific info and a picture of the Amana DW, also from Consumer Reports.

BOL Dishwashers

We have a Kenmore(rebadged GE) that's about 10 years old. You can still find this model at Sears and Home Depot (sold as a GE) for about $179.00
It's noisier than hell, but if you keep your water temp up to about 140F it really does clean well. Never have had any food bits left over. And it has been very reliable. No breakdowns yet.

Yeah the Roper/Whirlpool tower wash BOL machines seriously are crap. Even the BOL GE machines wash rings around the Roper because at least the GE have standard hard food disposers and a rudimentary mesh filter in them. The Roper has NO filtering and NO food disposer whatsoever.

Also, I'd recommend the BOL Frigidaire. it has a 2 level Precision Wash system wich is really good. 100% fine filtering and food disposer.
I recommend the GE, Amana, Frigidaire BOL machines for a cheap-ass / well performing machine lineup.

frigidaire

Cleans well, yes. Stupid, abominable "ball" gets stuck killing water supply to upper spray arm and causing pricy service call, also yes.
Stay away from Frigidaire.
