Wish I was closer! I grew up with one of these sitting next to an early 50's GE freezer in the garage. I used to defrost and wax it regularly. It was one of three that were bought as a package. My great aunt and her daughter lived together but couldn't "stand" each other, so my uncle re-did the kitchen cabinets to fit both of them in.

We had one of these in our basement until it stopped working sometime in the 70's. My dad had got it used sometime in the early 60's. It was replaced with the '47 Frigidaire which I still have.

Very close to my grandmother's 1941 Kelvinator which I now have in the collection. Only fridge she ever had. She had a big chest freezer in the backroom. Never any repairs except for a new door gasket. One for free above is rare in that its a left door swing.

We had a similar fridge for a period of time beginning in the late '60s.  It was yellow.  I liked the clunky sound it made when it ran.  My parents got it for free from someone, and at the time it provided much needed extra space since our daily driver in the kitchen was still the '49 Westinghouse.  The Kelvinator became a roommate to the '61 Tru Cold freezer in the basement.

I think it was after my mom took $100 of her own money and bought a used '65 Signature frost free model from a co-worker (as one would expect, it was a noisy doggy fridge that the rest of us hated, but that's what my dad got for being such a penny pincher about practical stuff) that the Kelvinator ended up with our next door neighbor.

I thought the tilt-out bin on these Kelvinator models was a good use of otherwise wasted space, and the door handle mechanism was a better design than that of its Westinghouse contemporaries (whose wasn't?).

Ken, yours looks so nice; it really shows off the lovely deco elements of the design. I couldn't really discern it in the original posting, it's in such ratty condition.

Was Kelvinator still using SO2 in 1941?

I believe the Kelvinator uses R12 but I'll take a look and report back. I didn't actually read the description in the ad for the free one until just now. Poster says they don't think it works. I contacted them to see if they would be interested in sending me the crisper drawer and glass over it if no one contacts them for the fridge. They were missing from mine when I got it. Link is to more pics of mine.

Thanks for all the pics, Ken. My parents had a '38 Nash when they were married. It was just an old beater and as a joke they replaced the Nash badge with a Kelvinator badge. My dad said it was a perfect fit.
