From my parents having had both of these machines, I can tell you that machine #1 is by far the more flexible performer. Machine #2 gives you the following speed combinations Normal Agitate with the 1010 spin, slow agitate and normal (600 rpm spin) on Permapress or Durable Press and slow agitate and slow spin on Delicate.  If you want normal agitation, you are locked into the 1010 spin. If they had added the 4th speed combination of normal agitation and slow spin, it would have been a very flexible washer. With a dryer, you can get away with using mostly the Normal/1010 speed, but we had non-permapress cotton slacks and bell bottoms that we dried on pants stretchers to get the crease in them (and maintain the length) and the super fast spin was not the best setting for them because it put too many wrinkles in the fabric above the area where the stretchers worked their magic. The slow agitation offered on the permapress or Durable Press setting was a little anemic for heavier fabrics like the slacks that tend to get dirtier than shirts. We used pants stretchers upside down in bell bottoms. We had donated all that we had from before permapress slacks came out and I had to go to, I think, Kesslers in downtown Atlanta to find new ones. Pants stretchers worked magic to bruise the crease in chinos. Long after I had stopped wearing a couple of pair to school because they had become too short, I still wore them for yard work and other chores. Even years later, they would come out of the dryer with that knife-sharp crease in the leg. Friends in elementary school whose mothers ironed the leg crease would have it almost disappear by mid morning while mine lasted all day and for years afterwards. I wonder if a mangle would have put a more lasting crease in the slacks.

The programmed machine offered the speed combinations of normal agitate/ normal spin, slow/slow, normal/slow (on Wash 'n Wear) which is much more effective for washing with that jet capsule, cone, whatever agitator and slow agitation/normal Spin which is available on both Perma Press and Special (woolens) which, I think, was separate from the Delicate Setting on most Frigidaire programmed washers.
