I ordered my new Bosch dishwasher on 6-08-06, and now they say it will be delivered tomarrow. There is no excuse for this. I filled a major complaint at their headcorters yesterday. Since last Nov. I've spent $3,500 dollars on appliances there. Well, NO MORE, I will NOT go there to even buy a litebulb, If Lowes is the only place to get what I need, I'll just do without. If this were the Homo Depot, they would have checked all their local store for it, But I think their employees are too busy PLAYING with themselves to help anyone!!! This store makes me SICK.....Bill in Az.....

Yeah I think you are right. I needed new doors for my house last fall and one of the two is an oddball size. Because of this fact, not only did they not want to install the door (and I had to pay them to come up here), but they didn't even bother to do the perfectly normal rear door. And have you seen their job applications? Their application, and hiring practices should be criminal. They try all kinds of bullshit to dig up any dirt they can on their applicants. It's almost like they don't want the extra help. And I tried talking to the stores manager, and she was an abrubt, distant, beeyotch. So I'm trying not to give them too much of my money either.

Stuff

like this is why I try to shop at locally owned businesses whenever possible.

There's more to it than the lowest price!

May spend 5-10% more, but the service is so much better, and to be able to deal directly with an owner of the company.....can be a big help.

When Lowes announced they were coming to town, the rest of the small hardware and appliance shops closed. My choice is Lowes or Sears.

I find the serivce better at Lowes than HD. And the Lowes stores seem cleaner and better kept than the old HD's. When I bought my last appliance purchase, I got same day delivery ( ON MOTHER's DAY). Lowes will still get my business first, if they don't have what I'm looking for, then I'll go to Lowes.

Home depot rather then Lowe's here

I have to say that here where I'm at Lowe's doesn't keep everything in stock like they should, They don't even ever have light bulbs in stock and then the shelves are empty like for 3 weeks, we have tried 3 times lately to buy at Lowe's and no one wanted to wait on us and what We went for was out of stock when right across the street to Home depot and found What we were looking for and they were even cheaper then Lowe's

Hey Bill:
Fill your pain; however in Little Rock it's just backwards...Home Depot does'nt have any staff...I waited the other day for 45 minutes and asked 4 times for someone to help me in the mill..finially got disgusted and went across the street to Lowe's...within 10 minutes I was waited on and on my way...I also spent an additional 300.00 while I was there. Lowes was good when I purchased my GE washer and dryer..they had the dryer but not the matching washer..they called a store 40 miles away and held it for me. Overall I'll have to admitt...I really dont care to shop at either...in my old age I've decided I'd rather pay more and shop with the mom and pop stores.

In my part of the Bay Area, pretty much every HD sucks. They're sloppy and nobody knows anything. Lowes is just now trying to get their foot in the door here. Only a few widely scattered stores. One recently opened within a reasonable distance from me and of course since it's new, it's a very nice store and well stocked with a lot of interesting stuff that can't be found at HD. Whether it stays that way and whether the employees are helpful remains to be seen when I go there on a serious mission, but it's a much nicer environment currently than any of the nearby HD's have to offer.
But for my regular trips to the hardware store, I'm with Maytagbear. I go to the big Ace Hardware a few blocks away. It has almost everything and has the industrial section too, way overstaffed with people asking to help you all over the place, and in some cases the prices are lower than OSH (Orchard Supply Hardware, a smaller faster alternative to the big box guys and my #2 choice behind my local ACE) a California hardware/home improvement chain that started locally in 1937 and is currently owned by Sears.

Markgray,

LOL about that comment.
You are only as old as you feel.
Time to stop and thank someone that you made it to that age and be grateful that you have made it so far.

Lowe's

Insulinpumpuser- I agree completely with your post about Lowe's and their customer service. I ordered a Whirlpool Gold dishwasher for my condo and they delivered a bottom of the line Maytag! I refused the dishwasher, only to wait a month to get my Whirlpoll installed!! The store manager called me after I complained to corporate and acted as if I was the one at fault. This company should follow Nordstrom's philosophy on Customer service, which is second to none!
I for one love Ace Hardware, their service is outstanding. if you have a store near you, I would recommend it.

Each store is only as good as its managerial staff. That's why when I have trouble, I ask that the manager be paged. One afternoon, we waited for 20 minutes while they paged "any MOD" and the pages went unanswered. I copied the store number and the phone number for HQ from the sign at the front of the store, then went home and made the call to report the situation. People waiting with me were grumbling so I told them to make a call also, but I doubt they did. My call must have made a difference because the next time I was in that store around 5 PM, they had more than one cashier on duty. These managers try to run the stores with the fewest staff they can get by with to increase profits. As we get more and more people in management from backgrounds where they have never learned or experienced customer service or even common curtesy, these types of problems will increase. If we, who have the brains and language skills to communicate, do not call corporate headquarters to report the problems, nothing is going to improve and everything will get worse for all shoppers.

Tom, I can't stand the incessant paging, screaming into the microphone, and paging all the time at our Home Depot. Just when I hear a song I like over the Muzak it's BUMP! then screaming, "GET Your Returns". Think I will be sending HD an email. Excessive paging and abuse of the paging was a problem when I worked at JCPenney too.

ACE is the place! ACE employees here in the Boise area are far more knowledgeable and helpful than either Lowes or HD personnel. At the latter two, you can just see them cringe when a customer starts to approach them with a question.

Recently, I tried to buy a middle-of-the-line Whirlpool dishwasher from HD for my mother. First off, they had no stock for three of their floor models. Then, when I asked if I could purch the floor model, the salesperson said she'd have to ask the department manager. 20 minutes later, she returned, acted like she totally forgot we were waiting, (which I think she did) and said that the manager had gone home. She made no attempt at an apology. So, gee, I'd like to give them my money, but they make it so difficult to do that.

rinso,

you got it "but they make it so difficult to do that.

We had the same issue with Beard Equipment (the John Deere Dealer) this past week. Begging them to take our money for a new tractor, and they just couldnt seem to find the time or the memory of someone wanting to PAY for one of thier machines. It just kills me

SERVICE AND KNOWLEDGE ARE G O N E FOLKS!

Big box stores get my goat like no other. I avoid them at all expense if I can. So many of my customers often refer to "Well we saw it at Home Depot" Excuse me while I Puke, please lady.

Yes, these maga stores have chased most of the smaller, competent hardware stores where, after you were shown where certain items were, you could find them yourself on following trips, out of business. Only in large areas have a very few of what we used to call hardware stores stayed in business, supported by people with incomes enabling them to value expertise over a possibly lower price, but the people who remember good service, like the people who know the words to "America The Beautiful," penned, incidentally, by a lesbian visiting Colorado, are fading. Kids don't mind waiting because they have their IPods drugging their brains through the ear buds and the people who have never been treated like businesses gave a damn think it is standard operating procedure. Most stores are not self service. If they were, they would have indexes and maps at the boundaries of the major departments telling you that the item you wanted was on aisle 6 A, on the floor under the lowest shelf. Tracking down the one employee in a department, if he or she is even on the floor, is a time wasting pain, especially when you find him or her and there are three other would be customers waiting to ask questions. While it eliminated jobs, the self checkout terminals at HD have improved service, especially with a supervisor stationed up front who knows how to handle problems that crop up when the machine does not detect the small package of fittings in the sack on the other side of the scanner (it helps to lower your fist all the way to the bottom of the bag like you were giving the damn machine the punch it deserves).

There's a Lowes in the town north of me. Picked up their trade in's out back before, even had an employee help me with the forklift. Never a problem.
'Bout 6 months ago,was picking up a Kenmore S/S fridge there, when some snotty kid came out,and asked me what I was doing. Told him I was picking up their junk appliances. He then told me that I couldn't have them, that they were donating them to the "less fortunate".Besides the S/S,there was a DD Whirlpool that had been dropped at least twice, and some other assorted 'garbage'. This is what they donate? The local scrapyard gets better stuff than that Lowes after their 'crack' delivery team gets done with 'em!
Haven't been back since.....

Personal experience this week at HD:

"Please scan your first item and place it in the bagging area." "Unexpected item in the bagging area, please remove." "Item removed from bagging area. Please return scanned item to the bagging area."

I totally love self-checkout, but the millenium of perfection has not yet arrived. The attendant, who had to reset everything, acted as if I had just violated some sacred rule of self-checkout, and should be banished to the depths of hell.

Let's face it, customer service as we knew it, is dead. But then, that's another thread.

Not if you seek out

the remaining independently owned businesses.
(If there are any in your locale!)

There is a high cost to chasing low price.

Lawrence,
You are right, of course, about independently owned business. Here the mom-and-pop appliance dealers belong to an association called Brand Source, which gives them some buying power and a good product line diversity. We finally found a dishwasher for mom at a locally-owned store here. It was about $25 more than the similar model HD displayed, but didn't stock. However, the price included delivery and installation.
