So last weekend I picked up this pristine 1984 Whirlpool set. One of those sets that a little old lady had who only used them on Sundays. Seriously. Complete with owner's manuals and fabric softener dispenser. The dryer looks like it was barely used. Anyway, had to take them (they were free) and although they are in lovely vintage '80s almond color, can't wait to set them up in my new washer room space as I rebuild my collection lost in the Valley Wildfire in 2015.

Good find, Todd. You will really like this washer, that agitator and huge basket will make short work of laundry day. I had a WP electronic control washer of this vintage and it was the only top loader that I could get to thoroughly turnover and clean a heavy, denim comforter.

The price was certainly right, Todd!  They are classic machines and you'll have lots of fun with them.  Congratulations on your finds!!

Maybe invest in some fireproof blankets this time around!

And a great price, FREE!

Is this washer belt drive or direct drive?

1984 Whirlpool

I'm told by the experts here that my Whirlpool was built in '84, but is an '82 model. Indeed mine does look different than yours. I believe that they said my dryer was built in '87. It looks much more like your machine.

Clarification

Sometimes I struggle to convey thoughts in print. I should have stated that as- they said mine is an '82 model, built in '84. Not like cars, for instance, where they change them every year. I believe that they said '84 was the last year for my model. So yours also being built in '84, but looking quite different, must be immediately after mine. Is yours a belt drive machine? I'll have to scare up some photos of mine for comparison.

Vintage 1984-5

The owner's manual is copyright 1984, and the one-time owner logged a purchase date of March 19, 1985. It is indeed a belt-drive and both washer and dryer are clean as a whistle! Hope to eventually have them in the indoor laundry room this Fall, once I get my new outdoor laundry room fixed up. Here's what I'm using now until I get my vintage machines going -- thought I should break down and get a new set to have as back up so I don't wear out my vintage machines..!
