Most likely the start relay for the compressor isn't working. It tries for a few seconds but since the start winding isn't being energized it just sits with a locked rotor until the bimetal protection device trips. It will try again in a few minutes when the bimetal cools and resets.
The compressor could be shot too, but the start relay is probably more likely and way cheaper/easier to fix! |

Something like this is what you may need. Your fridge's compressor likely falls into the 1/4 to 1/3 HP range.
