Hi, I am a new member but have been enjoying the discussion group for some time. I have just aquired a Kenmore washer, model #93533, and a GE dryer model #420xIW. Does anyone know the year of manufature of these machines? Thank you.

I am hopefully trying to get a maching set for my laundry room. Does someone have the Bride or Groom for either one of these? Also these machines might be available to someone if they are interested. They are in Renton, WA.

Thanks again. These were owned by one now elderly man and apparently they work fine. I haven't cleaned them up yet but they appear to be in good shape.

Hi Brian and welcome!

You have some nice machines there. I personally do not have the matches, however, keep you eyes open on here.

There is nothing but wonderful folks here and I am sure you will be glad you posted!

Steve

Welcome Brian!

Very nice finds you have there - the Kenmore washer was probably made between 1950-51-52, I have one made in 51. I think Sears carried this model for several years in different places in the lineup depending on what the TOL model was for that year, your/our model was second or third in line. Perhaps someone with a few of these year's catalogs can pinpoint it more accurately.

The GE dryer looks from the late 50's or very early 60's, it's probably the value-leader model, made for those who were buying a dryer for the first time. Is it wired for 240 volts like a standard electric dryer?

The "W" on a GE model of that era signifies 1962. This was a BOL or next to a BOL of that model line. And thank you, until this posting, I didn't know whether this model existed! It's an updated version of a model introduced in 1958.

Notice how your dryer's timer dial knob is a different from the "T" -shaped cleat handle typical of GE solid tub machines made between 1958 and 1960. The dryer door handle is also unusual. I guess because this model is "bare bones" they used a cheap cabinet knob instead of their usual pull.

Here's a rendering of the 1958 versions of your model:

On the 1958 models, the "clock-radio" backsplashes were paired on opposite sides, like older Whirlpools. By 1962, they moved the dryer's controls to the right side, like the washers:

Those are great finds, Brian! I like the dryer; it looks really sturdy and dependable ... no nonsense!!

Boy, to find a washer still functioning of that age is great. Hopefully, you won't have to do too much restoration work.

Thanks for sharing ...

As requested, here is the inside of the washer

Thanks to all for all the great information. This morning I cleaned the outside of the washer and it looks better. I don't know when I will get a chance to plug it in and hook it up, and see if it works. In answer to another question, the plug on the dryer looks like a regular dryer plug to me. I am on the lookout up here in the northwest for any more of these machines and will keep all of you posted.

Familiar GE

Did Hotpoint have a similar styled dryer from that same era? Ours was very similar to that, from 1959, when the house was built

Northwesty the dryer is the exact same dryer that I grewup with at home my dad bought it when we lived in Springville, N.Y. at Cambles dept. store. So I very familer with it. It was a very good dryer. Brings back memories of my childhood.

Washing great

Well just thought I would update for the folks who have checked out this thread. I hooked up the Kenmore and it worked great. I do feel fortunate to have found such a nice machine in such good shape. I guess Harry Truman was president when this machine was made!

Wonderful! This model is the first washer I remember my grandmother having back in the 1960s. I found out some years later that it was given to her used by a friend.
