This past weekend about a dozen of us from AW and other friends canned 2 bushels of tomatoes, 2 bushels of green beans 20 dozen ear of corn and about 35 pounds of peaches.

Meanwhile on the lower level of the museum Bob Orear used some of the classic washers to do laundry.   It is so much easier today to can vegetables than our parents and grandparents had it, the advent of air conditioning,  dishwashers and pressure canners makes the job so much easier.

Some pictures of the festivities to follow

Wow!  I think you'd have to call it a maxi canning party given the amount of food involved.  You certainly had the perfect canning kitchen.  Recalling the 100 degree kitchen when I helped my mom can tomatoes, air conditioning is definitely an important element in canning. Thanks for all the photos!

One question:  Why were the filled and sealed jars in the dishwasher?

Dishwasher Canning ?

No actually, I am washing off any sticky residue on the outside of the jars. I have been doing this for years, after the jars have sealed and cooled I remove the screw bands and load the jars in the DW, then I add about one teaspoon of detergent and run the WP Rinse & Hold cycle which is two full rinses, this does a perfect job of cleaning the jars without heating up the contents much.

John,

I'd like to see a full photo of your Tappan Gallery warming shelf range.
My mom had one. I thought it was so cool!

Sorry I missed it - looks like a lot of fun!

I remember canning at my grandmother's went on from August until the garden was empty, usually in late September. They had a room full of jars and the potatoes were piled high. We didn't notice the heat as much as we would now, just the way it was...

I was wondering what the dishwasher trick was. I am going to can tomatoes tomorrow and may try that tip and save a step on cleaning the jars after they are cooled.

Thanks for the info, John. I know you are diligent with food safety when canning, so I figured you weren't using the sanitize option as a substitute for safe practices. But it did cross my mind that maybe you were showing us how much weight the upper rack of the dishwasher could hold without collapsing, LOL.

Looks like that was a lot of fun. Was any video taken? It'd make for a good documentary.

My grandmother, her sisters, & sisters-in-law would have canning parties at the end of summer. If I was visiting during one of them my job was to be a minion and pay attention as they narrated the process for me.

Remember tomato canning sessions at my Moms and Stepdads house in Camp Springs,MD back in the 60's and 70's.Stepdad had a garden and Mom was the canner-I was brought in to help! For some of the sessions-in and old farmhouse they rented the kitchen got hot.In their later home they moved to-a Levitt built house-that was AC'd MUCH better-but the heat thrown out is still pretty high. The dishwasher trick is interesting.

Looks like great fun!!!

Wish I could have been there. My vegetable source seems to have dried up.

Looks like a great supply for the winter.

John,

On the Jenn Air range, is that an induction cartridge on the left?  I don't think I've ever seen one that wasn't white.
