This past weekend about a dozen of us from AW and other friends canned 2 bushels of tomatoes, 2 bushels of green beans 20 dozen ear of corn and about 35 pounds of peaches.
Meanwhile on the lower level of the museum Bob Orear used some of the classic washers to do laundry. It is so much easier today to can vegetables than our parents and grandparents had it, the advent of air conditioning, dishwashers and pressure canners makes the job so much easier.
Some pictures of the festivities to follow |

Wow! I think you'd have to call it a maxi canning party given the amount of food involved. You certainly had the perfect canning kitchen. Recalling the 100 degree kitchen when I helped my mom can tomatoes, air conditioning is definitely an important element in canning. Thanks for all the photos!
One question: Why were the filled and sealed jars in the dishwasher? |

No actually, I am washing off any sticky residue on the outside of the jars. I have been doing this for years, after the jars have sealed and cooled I remove the screw bands and load the jars in the DW, then I add about one teaspoon of detergent and run the WP Rinse & Hold cycle which is two full rinses, this does a perfect job of cleaning the jars without heating up the contents much. |

I'd like to see a full photo of your Tappan Gallery warming shelf range. My mom had one. I thought it was so cool! |

Thanks for the info, John. I know you are diligent with food safety when canning, so I figured you weren't using the sanitize option as a substitute for safe practices. But it did cross my mind that maybe you were showing us how much weight the upper rack of the dishwasher could hold without collapsing, LOL.

That looks like fun! You'll be eating beans all winter. Here's a recipe for Sambal Goreng Beans:

Wish I could have been there. My vegetable source seems to have dried up. Looks like a great supply for the winter. Jerry Gay |
