Last weekend saw the annual trip to Malmsbury, Wiltshire for the gathering of "Hoover" collectors, as it was the 60th birthday of the famous Hoovermatic Twintub washing machine first produced in July 1957 we have a toast to the old girl and hauled out a number of "Hoovers" to play with as well...
As you drive down the leafy lanes nearby you turn a sharp bend and there in front of you is Kemble Cotswolds Airport for small planes and helicopters but they have these mature "Queens of the Skys" at the side of the road, first time I came down it was at night and I nearly crashed the car not knowing where I was, when I see this landmark I know "I`ve Landed". First load in and done in 4 minutes with the Hoover Pulsating Boiling washing action, which produces 7 strong whirling current of energised water to roll your clothes through the water, hence the very quick wash times. You can see how they advertised it as speeding through the family wash in 40 mins.
Heres Alistair (Vacbear58) and Mathew (Keymatic3203) rinsing while a second load is washing. Hoovermatic Facts: Height 31 x Width 30 inches x Depth 16.5 inches Weight: 105 lbs Pulsator motor rpm 1,425 Spinner motor rpm 9,000 Pump rpm 2,100 Pulsator rpm 545 Spinner rpm 2,100 Heater 3kW Water capacity 8 and half gallons This post was last edited 09/03/2017 at 04:59 |

Of course its snot a Hoover Wasday without the "Hoover Splat"...usually as the washload is swirling around the force of the rolling clothes produces a plume of water which usually goes over the top of the tub and lands on the floor, even with the lid on it somehow manages to come through the handgrip.

As with most washing machines of that era they came with a package of "User Information" from a detailed handy washcard to be kept near your machine for quick instructions on how to use, to booklets on "washing the Hoover Way" as well as guarantees and leaflets of other supporting products, a far cry from todays printed booklets.

Jacck brought out his treasured Hoover Turbopower special with "Autosense" which automatically adjusts the power if it senses heavy particles of dirt, is the one his grandparents bought while he was with them as a young child.

Wow looks like a great time thanks for posting all the fun Mike.
You guys in the UK really have some great get togethers, I can't wait to get back over there again.
I am going to head over to Australia this month to see fellow collectors Leon and Nathan and others to usher in Springtime in Australia.
I am hoping to get back to London this fall and hopefully next year as well.

And onto first repairs for the day, which is the Hoover SpinaRinse, this model has the waste water outlet arm on the top, it lifts out and swivels, inside is a flexible rubber hose attached to the pump, over time the arm connection weakens and can snap as in this case, with new arm procured Dr Hoover started the repairs..

Heres the replacement arm ready for fitting, I do love these metal worktops that came with the Hoover single tubs and spinners, really finishes them off and also act as handy trays to take the laundry outside to be pegged out on the washing line.

The beauty of these machines is that they they are built on a rigid chassis to which the motor is bolted, the rest of the outer cabinet is then built with the spin can and pulley inside and then this is placed on top of the base in the factory and bolted together..
Final pic with the pulley nut undone and hose pump disconnected the base swings out of the way to get to the hose and arm inside.. |

With the base out of the way we can release the old pipe and arm and get ready to replace the old waste pipe which had many cracks in it, not bad for lasting 50 yrs old though...

The original pipe was a formed one with bends in it to take acount of the discharge arm being swung in eith direction, ie over the washer for sudz return or the sink for rinsing...for that in mind we used a new rubber type flexi hose, while not one for the purists aka either black or rubber, needs must when we need a working model, this provided the right amount of flexibility to allow it to be looped and to flex either side when moved around and up and down in the housing....

With all that done its just a matter of tucking everything back in, tightening up the base and checking all okay...
