Is it any wonder that Kenmore washers and dryers were in more homes than any other? At those prices who could resist? They were good, well built, heavy duty machines that did their function very well and lasted a long time with little servicing in most cases.

And, for a long time, before charge cards became ubiquitous, Sears credit was easier to get. Does anyone remember Sears' Revolving Charge plan?

Oh yes, I remember that well. Here in my neck of the woods, there were two places you could get easy credit for appliances and even furniture. Sears and Otasco. That is one reason there were so many Kenmore and brands that Otasco sold here.

They phased out my Sears Charge card and replaced it with a Discover card. But back then, nobody other than Sears honored Discover.

I got my very first credit history with a Sears Revolving Charge account when I purchased a 10 inch Silvertone Color TV at the Sears Catalog store in Petaluma, Calif.in 1970. I bought the only floor model hey had in the store, the monthly payment was $6.50 a month, I think the TV cost $179.99.

I like the 800 vs. the 700 (another recent POD) because of the timed dispensers. I like washers that add liquid chlorine bleach toward the end of the wash period or, as with most front-loaders, during the first rinse. Detergents (especially today's stain-eating enzyme-cocktail concoctions) need time to work alone before LCB is introduced. Never been a big fan of agitator mounted softener dispensers, either.

So...three cheers for the 800!

Sears Actually Had Two Different Credit Cards

I worked for Sears catalog department during my high school and college years as a Red Badge. Sears had SRC for regular items, but they also had EP (easy payment) for big ticket items. EP offered lower payments over a longer period of time.

Remember Sears motto..."satisfaction guaranteed?" Oh I could tell you stories of what was used then returned! Some people had no shame.

I just had to use my Sears Charge in order to keep it open.  I haven't used it in years, but it was my very first charge account, opened in 1982 and I didn't want to lose it.  t had some reward points attached and a store credit so I bought an outdoor firepit that ended up costing about $15.

Just curious, what was the popular agitator used in this model?

Thank you Tim. Wondered if the straight vane was ever used.

Oh Sears;

Where America once shopped. My first credit card was also from Sears.

Sears Credit Card

was my first credit card too in 1973. I was still in High School but I worked at Sears so I was able to get a credit card with a $250.00 line of credit!

It's sad. I went by my old Sears store, Sears Oakbrook, when I was in the Chicago area a few weeks ago and was so disappointed to see yellow signs on all the doors that said "SEARS OAKBROOK IS CLOSED AS OF 09/04/2017" My first job was as a busboy in the Sears Coffeehouse in 1970.
