.
Some 40 million units, some dating back to the 70's.
Sounds like a no-questions-asked replacement of affected models.

Wow, that is a huge recall. I have two extinguishers like the one on the left. Bought them when I purchased the house 15 years ago. Suppose I should replace them. Wouldn't want one to fail in case of an actual emergency. Thanks for the heads-up on this one!

Sounds like the plastic valves are not aging gracefully and fracturing in the moment when they're needed...

Our church has several Kidde extinguishers, but they are commercial models with metal handles. They have inspection tags indicating date the inspector was there.

Got My Replacement Extinguisher Today

I went online the day after the Kidde extinguisher recall hit the news and filled out the request form for a replacement.
The replacement arrived today. It is shorter and fatter than the old one so will no longer fit in my narrow cupboard where I stored the old one.
I'll have to find a new place for it.
I must say that Kidde certainly was fast and efficient in sending the replacement.
A pre-paid FedEx return label comes in the box so it will be easy to return the old one.
My old extinguisher was from the 1980's and the gauge showed a low charge.
Now, I have a brand new, fully charged extinguisher that should last me the rest of my days.
Good job, Kidde!

I've had some Kidde extingushers with plastic handles. One I threw out last year because its pressure had dropped below minimum. And I recalled emptying it out before discarding wasn't easy, so it may have also had a valve issue. I probably have one or two more with plastic handles, I'll have to check. I recall looking at those plastic handles when I bought them and not being impressed by the plastic. Most of the ones I've bought in the last 10 years have the aluminum handles; those are apparently fine.

I called today, spoke to a real person and found out both of mine are under the recall. They told me to expect my replacements in about 10 days. Mine are like the very first and very last ones in the picture above. Cant beat that for good service.
