What's this?
What do we have here in the back of my friend Brian's Subaru?

you may remember..

Back in March I won a KDS-17A from ebay. It was coppertone, and I picked it up the same day I picked up my Maytag 608 set.
The Maytag washer came over back in may, and now tonight the dishwasher is ready to move.
Here I am all excited to get this baby home!

(looks like it wouldn't hurt me to skip a couple of meal too!)

As much as I love coppertone...

It would totally not go with my kitchen.
So I sent the panels out to be painted. Black.
Here's the final result. It looks as though it could have come from the factory this way!

A very special thanks to Dave & Jim's Auto Body in Arlington Heights Illinois for the paint job! It loosk smashing!

sideways

Installation and maiden wash coming soon, probably next weekend. Its month end at work again, so I won't get to installing it this week.
All thats left to be done is replacing the door seal gasket, and some tine repair on the lower rack.

Look at the reflection in that front panel!!

It looks like you have a post-energy crisis Superba with the black DRY HEAT OFF button thrown onto the control panel in a way that did not require them to change the bank of pushbuttons. Hope you enjoy your 17. That's a strong washing dishwasher. For tine repair, I use the two part epoxy repair kit and those vinyl push on caps. The epoxy will cure without air so you can dab the epoxy on and then push the cap on. One set of caps said to use silicone adhesive, but without air the silicone would not cure so that was bogus.

I had that exact dishwasher....

gadgetgary's profile picture
And absolutely loved it.....bought it used in avocado green, had the front panels spray painted to harvest gold(to match my kitchen), and then when I did a kitchen remodel, had the panels spray painted again to almond. The only thing I needed was new racks since the ones that were in the machine were badly rusted. I don't really know, but perhaps that machine is still in the condo that I sold in 1987.
Good Luck with it~!

this is very nice...

This dishwasher ran its last cycle the day I picked it up(it was still warm when we loaded it onto the rented van) and the lady who was selling it was having 2nd thoughts and almost in tears. I promised that her very beloved machine would have a good home.
Last night, in addition to the post here I emailed the pictures to this lady's daughter, who'd been the contact person with ebay.
I recieved the following very nice response from the daughter today:

Hi Jeff,

My mom wanted me to thank you for the pictures. She was completely blown away that you took the time out to send us some. She says that it looks fabulous and wishes you the best of luck with it.

We are still getting use to our new one and are just putting the finishing touches on the kitchen. We just joked last week about calling you back and asking to buy the dishwasher back after we were having problems with the new one. All the problems have been fixed, so everything seems to be working good now.

Thanks so much for the e-mail. It was nice to hear that everything is working out for you with the dishwasher.

Kristina

Hey Hoover1060,

bajaespuma's profile picture
I have an entire repair manual for the KitchenAid KD-17 series. I also have a KDS-17 and a KDS-17a both disassembled in my basement. I'm intending to Frankenstein them into one beautiful working machine, but have yet to get to them. The manual itself is about 40+ pages long, and I have wanted to post it to this site, but my scanner interface is on the fritz again. If you need it and would like to use it, I can Xerox it for you and send it via snail-mail. Let me know if you're interested with an email or a posting response and I'll send you the details.

Oh, you'll do just fine installing this - easy as pie!

The door gasket is a pretty easy fix, do you have the replacement gasket? Like Fred said, peel back the gasket - you'll see the screws holding it and the mounting strip to the door. The maual mentions getting the clips back in the same place they were, so it sounds like that should give you little or no trouble at all!

Good luck!

easy as pie!

Hey Greg,
I am sure once I get this one installed, swapping out dishwashers will be easy, and who knows what may come along next?
I got the replacement gaskst from repair clinic, and the rack repair things from Whirlpool.

Fred I've got a 14+ hour day at work today, but I'll check in with you at some point.
Must get busy now, today is the dreaded "Last day to sign" for July!

Hey Jeff

fnelson487's profile picture
I just thought of something. Take a picture of the KDS-17A uninstalled without the towel over it to show the steel reinforcing bars that run up an down both sides of the machine. They stopped that somewhere along the line before the 23. You could literally run over those machines with a steamroller and not make a dent. That and triple porcelean over steel wash chamber. No wonder they are still running 30 years later! Notice and appreciate the difference in construction as you take the old one out and put the new (old) one in. It will give you an appreciation of the quality that used to go into those machines. Enjoy!

Fred

The inevitable slide?

bajaespuma's profile picture
I so agree about the side brackets. It was a thoughtful detail that befitted the flagship model of the brand. I'll never forget helping my Father install our KitchenAid dishwasher in 1972...I was so impressed with how well and solidly built the thing was.I think KitchenAid achieved design perfection in its KD-17 series much in the way Maytag had achieved it in their 906-106 models.
Once they started monkeying around with a third spray arm and knocked their racking strategy off-center (like Maytag knocking its control dial off-center) they started a slow spiral downwards into the Whirlpool.

Steel Frame

deeptub's profile picture
The steel frame that extended to the top of the tank was eliminated on the 21 series (1984), presumably because by that point a full insulation blanket for the tank trumped the ability to hold up a counter.

Interestingly, the "short frame" design of the 21-23 models is still much heavier and much more rigid than any of its contemporairies and most modern machines. If you raise one leveling leg of a 21-23, the machine will rock back and forth, not settle out-of-square like most new machines seem to.

OK - Here's The Front

fnelson487's profile picture
I found this with the brushed chrome (I think - because it also had a stainless steel option) front. I was lucky. I would like to also find the frame holder for this unit which allows you to put any panel in you like including matching the wood cabinetry. Check out post 144943 in Connecticut above. That's a custom panel holder. Thanks Ken, turquoise is one of my favorites - also my mom's - she had a complete turquoise kitchen - minus the dishwasher. The only problem with this installation is that there is a brace in the back of this unit to hold up the granite countertop which causes the unit to stick out a bit. I am going to take this unit out and take off the ledge behind the dishwasher so that it is flush with the cabinets, the way it was supposed to be.

Its in place and anchored down.
The electric is hooked up.
I need to drill a new hole in the cabinet to run the water line and drain hose thru, as one of the frame members blocks the former one.
My dad's gone to the store to get a large drill bit...
It shouldn't be long now!

Congratulations, Jeff!
I don't know why, but I've always found it charming the way the Prewash light goes out and then the Wash light comes on a half second later with the opening of the water valve. Sort of the one bit of evidence of the complex electromechanical controls underlying the simple pushbuttons and lights.

I'm pleased that so many people are finding and using these machines for daily use (so to speak). I think regular use keeps them young. And it's possible that a lot of them are still in use in their original installations and are just becoming available to collectors (like Jeff's was). I got my first dishwasher (a KDS-17A) in 1998 and hoped it would get me through 2 years. Now 8 years later I'm still using it--it's been in 4 different apartments now! (Of course, 8 years ago I never dreamed that it would be the first of a fleet of dishwashers!)

Good times
T.

PS Jeff, I love the old flooring visible under your DW!

Thanks guys

I think I will really like this dishwasher once I get used to it. I know it has to be loaded a certain way, should not be a problem, and I generally rinse and under-load the dishwasher anyway.

That floor under the DW was also in the basement, but was taken up 3 years ago after the flood.
