from the 1970s, that had two compartments, sort of like the current day Fisher and Paykel, but was in one cabinet?

I never saw one in person, but in French classes in junior high and high school, we did a lot of cutting up of back issues of Paris-Match, and there were a few ads for this Candy dishwasher, or am I totally hallucinating from the very bad coffee I had at a meeting tonight.

Anyone have experience with this machine? One compartment was for tablewares, and the other for kitchenware.

Hi, I actually am a French teacher and traveled throughout France during the summer of 1987. I have an original sales brochure for a Candy dishwasher in French from that time period. (You are not hallucinating.)

On October 9th 2004 the German Club had this picture as Picture of the Day. The Archives are really interesting. Just have a browse.

You aren't trippin', dear - Candy has invented some really unusual things through the years. In the 80's they had a combination stove, dishwasher and microwave. Very strange. The trouble with Candy is that their brilliant ideas are incorporated into very poor quality products. They get on in Italy, because the Italians tend to put ergonomics and design first on their list of imporant qualities - right up there with cleaning - followed by cost and then by quality.
Germans tend to put quality first, cleaning second, price third and design fourth.
The English tend to put "national" brands first (a hang-over from the days when British products were actually made in Britain and were of good quality.)
The Dutch, at least in Amsterdam (for such a small country, they sure manage a wider range of cultures throughout their beautiful country than anyone else I know) put cleanliness first and everything else sort of follows.
One nice thing about Candy is their really deep lower racks. Obviously great for pasta pots and big, deep plates.

No way Maytag created the (full) three rack dishwasher as they claim on their website (World's first with three full racks). Here's another one, a Miele with three racks. It's from the seventies.

Candy Trio

When you have to live in a one room 30 square meter apartment (something like 300 sq. ft.), as one of my brothers did when he was a bachellor, I would surely love a solution like the Candy Trio.

Amazing...it's a compact cooker/dishwasher combo and yet it still features a built-in rotisserie! What's wrong with the US?

Louis,
You keep forgetting that the USA IS the (center of the) world. Is there anywhere else? LOL ROFL LMAO. One day we will figure it out.

That Candy Trio is GORGEOUS. Now make the oven a fridge and install a micro-convection oven above and all we need is a sink!

Regarding the picture of the Candy 3-rack dishwasher

varicyclevoice's profile picture
How does one fit in dinner plates? According to the picture, it would appear that one must only eat their meals from saucers. Does the middle rack come out?

correction...

the picture I was looking at was the Miele brand, not the Candy brand.

"i thought maytag was supposed to have created the first 3 rack dishwasher?"

That must be just like Maytag invented the horizontal axis washer with the spittoon, I mean Neptune. I guess many people believed them, even though there was a time somewhere in the late 1920s through the early 30s when Maytag sold, and I guess made, a rectangular, flat top washer. When the lid was opened, there was a revolving drum, longer than deep, with a port that you unlatched to load the clothes. There was a power wringer, exposed belt and pulley and you still needed tubs for rinsing. John's friends who had the Maytag dealership had a big framed ad for one on the wall of the shop, but wanted to keep it when they retired and closed the business. I am only basing my estimate of the time period on the style of the ad and the hairstyle and fashion of the lady in the ad. Of course, she was not doing laundry, just admiring the machine, so she was dressed very nicely.

I remember Candy Appliance ads from European periodicals. I think that their three rack arrangement was better than Miele's or Maytag's because of the way the space was used. I would guess that there were wash arms under each lower rack rack and then a wash arm above the plate racks. I wonder if it was a Candy washing machine in the 80s that had the recirculating wash stream. I remember ads for one, I just cannot remember the brand.
