Hey guys,
Christmas came early and I purchased one of the new Samsung Smart Hub refrigerators using my credit card points. I have to say overall I am impressed with the functions of the "smart hub" and ease of use. Its too close to the wall to take a pic of the full unit, so I included a pic from the internet.

Smart Hub Function Questions

What networking requirements are there for this line of Samsung refrigerators?

My husband and I have been looking at the four-door model, and we are wondering if this uses a WiFi connection, similar to a wireless printer, or an actual cable to a data port.

We have looked at the specifications on the Samsung site, as well as the promotional material in the store (visits to Home Depot), but as yet no useful answers.

Thanks!

I wanted the 4 door model because one section can be either fridge or freezer, but this one was the only one I could get for free with my credit card points. Its wifi connected it also offers Bluetooth for external speakers. The fridge does have 2 internal speakers. And also includes a free Ring Door bell that links to fridge and displays on screen.

Wow, That's almost the fridge i want...

I'm desperate for the 4 door one, the matching magnetic induction stove and the microwave, all of them with internet.

To the person that asked above, your husband has an excellent taste. The connection si Wi-Fi. Who uses cables nowadays? this is too 1990s. It wouldn't be "smart" if it required a messy wired network.

Like all Samsung Smart appliances, it not only uses Wi-Fi, but each "smart thing" also works as repeater, to boost the Wi-Fi network range. They are also a perfect match for the Smasung Smartthings hub, which is a device that allows full home automation (control lights, appliances, outlets, and make everything interact perfectly. For example, if I'm driving home, my Samsung phone knows i'm arriving (by GPS) and turns on the heat or the A/C. It also "learns" my routine to turn on the vacuum as soon as I leave home. The smarthub on the fridge is exactly like a giant tablet. I can download recipes, browse the internet, create shopping lists and send them to my phone or order online, i can even see what's in the fridge without opening the door or when i'm not home because it has 3 cameras IN the fridge.

Based on the recipe i find on the internet, the smarthub understand i'm cooking it and then Bixby can, for example, ask me if she should preheat the oven and set a timer.

If the recipe has, for example "melt 3 tablespoons of butter", it sends the information to the microwave, so I just need to open and close the door and hit start because the microwave already received the information and already set the time and power to melt 3 tbsp of butter.
Depending on the recipe i cooked, it also sends the information to the dishwasher that knows i'll be washing a baking tray with baked on foods, for example.

The Smartthings hub also works as a security system and the hub is also a 360° security camera/motion sensor and Smasung has tons of different sensors glass breaking, magnetic for doors, motion sensors, wireless cameras, flood sensors, smoke, CO and gas leak sensors, panic buttons, remote sirens, etc.

There are also outlets and switches to control whatever "dumb" appliances or fixtures.

And the new samsung vacuum cleaner is smart enough to create a decent map for the room and vacuum at a decent pattern and it learns more each time it vacuums, instead of simply running randomly and passing 50 times on the same spot and leaving several spots without vacuuming. You can also use Bixby to teach the vacuum what is each room, so I can just ask Bixby "please vacuum, the dining room now" and the vacuum will ignore the rest of the house and vacuum only the dining room.

IDK why my husband is kinda afraid of Wi-Fi networks. as soon as the setup is well made, Wi-Fi networks are extremely safe and encrypted. (specially now that even the vacuum cleaner and the toilet has Wi-Fi)

Anyway, i'll make this apartment as smart as possible. i'll rest only when i have everything smart.

Wow!!!

I am definitely getting on in years, I can't believe there are actually freezers talking to my oven or toaster. I can't for the life of me see the actual need for it, yes for the first few weeks I can imagine the new feeling of it all, but after the novelty wears off you would have spend an huge extra amount on, let's face it a "gadget". My experience with computers that are linked to the internet is rather abysmal, As you would certainly have to constantly do updates on the software, and what about the possibility of malware and ransomware or other weird viruses doing the rounds.

I really don't see the advantage of having a tablet on my fridge, just do the job it was originally designed to do, keep foods fresh, and it would be awesome if it could actually keep vegetables fresher for three or four times longer, that in my opinion would be progress.

Nowadays, progress is defined by slapping a tablet on everything from cars to washers to fridges and freezers while in actual fact no real advancements in technology has been achieved. And god forbid that the newest washer or car or freezer does not have a touch screen, then it is simply old and not up to date!

I have had a car with said touch screen and I almost had an accident whilst trying to change the cd on the damn touch screen ( I know who actually listens to cd's these days)

Regards

Um no,

just no.
I can open the doors to see what I need to shop for. It doesn't waste a lot of energy. It's not a huge restaurant fridge. I have a tv set already.
I don't need it to send a shopping list to my phone, or to my shopping/delivery service. I do not want any exterior hacking possibilities inside my home.

What is really important?

With all that is discussed on this forum in all its categories, why is everyone going gaga for appliances like this? Why just yesterday, I ventured into Lowes and they were actually displaying a GE and Frigidaire dishwasher with a dial for selecting cycles! Not that I would ever buy one of them for their poor performance, but maybe consumers are realizing that all those fancy pushbuttons and options don't mean so much and have nearly dismal reliability. The person I was speaking with had a 2 yr old WP DW and the control board is shot. He really had his eye on these 2 machines but when he saw how bad they looked inside, he was easily swayed to the Maytag/Point Voyager style machine.

The major thing any of us should be worried about is not whether the fridge has Wi-Fi or can control our whole house filled with gadgets but whether the darned refrigerator will work when you plug it in and for how long!

We have a French door Samsung and while it has nice features and beautiful LED interior lighting, it has been far from a stellar performer and need I remind you that Samsung's customer service is non existent once the warranty is over and they refuse to acknowledge known defects on their refrigerators and leave the repairs up to the owners?
We have had to have ours repaired 4 times for the evaporator icing problems within 6 months and the ice maker accumulates so much frost under the icemaking mold itself that I have to manually defrost it every 4-6 weeks.
Granted, when it works, it works fine but you never know what may go next.
And what happens when that beautiful screen fails to work? Throw the whole unit away because nobody fixes TV's anymore? Sometimes, even for free, the item is not worth it.

And one last rant, what are you all going to do when there is a random hack of the IOT(internet of things) and all those gadgets are rendered usesless unless you pay a ransom to get them back?

I'm with mieleforever and vacerator.. open the door to check inventory and make sure the box is cold.

Well, Spacedogb, you hit the "negative reaction" trifecta with this one, LOL. It's a Samsung, it's chock full of high-tech features, and it's connected to the internet.

Samsung appliances have great features, styling and quite often, performance. Wish they'd get their U.S. parts distribution/repair act together. A local dealer (who does his own repairs) carried the brand for a few years, then dropped it because they had problems getting parts. Nothing makes a customer more hot-under-the-collar than to be without an appliance for three or four weeks waiting for a part to arrive.

I, for one, am completely in favor of smart/wi-fi appliances. We're still in the early stages of connected appliances, but there is already more useful functionality to them than there was even a year or two ago. Love that big screen.

Enjoy your free high-tech fridge and may the reliability gods be with you!

Never mind a hurricane!

I think it looks really neat and I hope you find the features useful, it sounds like you are quite restricted for space so I can see how the screen etc. could be useful - even an old fogey like me finds I turn more and more to the net and the iPad is just more clutter on the counter when space is tight, lets not even go there with laptops.

Credit card points? Can't be beat, a great looking appliance for "free". I wish you many years use from it and good health to enjoy it 😊

As .. against Samsung as I was.. going into my sales job, I have come around with their fridges.

I don't understand where people say Samsung is so hard to get parts for blah blah blah. I'll give you this, their system to find the parts leaves a lot to be desired.. But we have a great service writer that has figured out the nuances of their system and they are, by far, the fastest part supplier we have. Their turn around on trouble tickets is the fastest we've seen in a long time. If you know how to use the tools they have available, they are extremely expedient. If you don't know how to use their system, hire someone that is willing to learn.

Anyways, they have figured out a lot of the bugs with their fridges. They have solved a lot of the issues they were having and beefed up a lot of their components. They have one of the best sealed system/compressor warranties on the market. They are also a tech company, so this is the kind of thing they excel at. Connected homes and smart things.

Congratulations on the new fridge. I hope it lasts you for many years of service.

I will add that since I've started this job (7/14/15) Samsung has been the least repaired NEW product we sell. We have had a lot of GE's and Whirlpool Family products brought in after installation. Now with the Whirlpool Brand family having a hard time supplying most french door fridges, we don't move a lot of them. I hope they figure that out here pretty quick.

Also, I would take the Family Hub tablet built into the fridge before I'd take a glass window that lights up any day. Once the novelty wears off, there really are a lot of useful features. Setting dates on things, keeping an inventory and the ability to keep a recipe posted as you are using it.

As I mentioned in a thread almost 2 years ago, I had no trouble getting Samsung parts for refurb/repair of a 5-years old frontloader.  Several online sources at reasonable prices.

There are tastes and tastes.

Luckily the market is full of options (from the cheapest BOL fridge that is just a square box that is cold inside to a high end fridge full of bells and whistles).

One thing that is really annoying is when you get something new, that you really wanted or like or coincidently you got for free thanks to the credit card points and there is always somebody laughing or trying to ridicularize the choice.

Come on guys. YOU don't like a fridge that has more electronic components than Apollo 11, great. You would buy it? GREAT, You have to buy (or get for free) the model YOU want that has the features YOU think are useful in YOUR house.

I personally HATE Speed Queen washers, but nobody ever saw me trying to ridicularize those that believe SQ is the best washer ever made.

Reliable, yes, it is (up to a certain point).

Better built? Hummm, most of it yes, but i have my doubts.

ANyway, I personally don't care if my fridge full of bells and whistles won't last 30 years. Deal with it! In 10 or 15 years a different model will have so many interesting features that the Samsung I love and want today will look like a BOL Haier.

And guess what. I didn't go knock any AWO member's door to ask for money to buy MY fridge or MY stove or MY microwave, or MY smart power outlet. Both my husband and I work very hard to afford the luxuries we want. And guess what. We will also have the Samsung washer and the dryer (those with mini top load units on the top), the magic chef 2.1 cu ft washer (i have the 1.6 cu ft and I love it but it's too small), the Magic chef washer-dryer combo (only to have the whole product line side by side in the laundry room) and also LG washer, LG dryer and LG washer-dryer combo (that one with square door, all matching), and 3 LG sidekick washers under each one of those. Why? Simply because my husband loves that model and I want him to have the pleasure of using them on his laundry day. I hate washer-dryers because they take forever to dry, but I'll do that only to see my husband happy. It's HIS taste, so let's get what HE wants exactly the same way we will get the kitchen appliances I want. Unfortunately we don't have a giant kitchen, otherwise we would also have a high end Viking or AGA stove and a walk in Sub Zero refrigerator.

About the kitchen appliances, i was going to get everything kitchenaid, but they look ridiculously "low end" and their stove doesn't even have a decent self cleaning cycle, just that "Aqualift" crap that does nothing more than my steam cleaner.

And to "match" the fridge, stove, microwave and dishwasher, we will have two blenders. MY kitchenaid ultra expensive high end model to match a high end kitchenaid pro stand mixer, spresso maker, drip coffee maker, hand blender (all red, of course) and his Ninja blender. I love KA small appliances, he loves Ninja, so to avoid any discussions, we opted to double the appliances. We need all that? Definitely NOT! But we both will be happy using the appliances we like.

Do we need that much? Of course not! Nobody needs 2 or 3 stoves in the kitchen. But hello, this is AWO. is it really that strange for somebody here to have the appliances they want? Who needs more than one washing machine? AFAIK Robert, the webmaster has a basement with washers enough to compete with a small commercial laundry. Some people love vintage (Yes, I like vintage too and if someday I have the giant kitchen i want, next to the other high end stoves i mentioned above, i want a Frigidaire Flair too and a vintage KA dishwasher.) others love modern. I like both vintage and modern, for as daily drivers, I prefer modern and high end.

And things get obsolete. In 10 or 15 years I'll be praying for my Samsung fridge to die soon only to get rid of it and clear space for a new model will even more bells and whistles. it it survives, it won't be the daily driver anymore. maybe I can keep it or I can sell it or even give to a friend or donate to somebody that needs a fridge and can't afford.

And yes, if somebody wants to have the right to judge or make negative comments about the appliances I have, the person can start with that Bissell water filter canister vacuum cleaner/carpet/hard floor washer I want. It costs less than $200 at Walmart.com. As a second alternative, it can be the shark apex duoclean (TOL of course, available at Bed, Bath & Beyond. Buy it, have it shipped to my address and as soon as it is paid, the person that paid for it will automatically have a perpetual right to say it's a crap and my choice was ridiculous because only Kirbys are nice, Anybody else can just say "humm, not for me, thanks".

Ps. My dorbell was already installed. GE, wireless, i didn't have anything to do with the choice, but what a happy coincidence. My landlord chose a doorbell that has the "The Jetsons" doorbell sound. Oh, and the two ceiling fans have wireless remote controls.

I have to agree with Thomas, too often we get into snarky mode.  Instead why not be happy for someone who has acquired something they are happy enough to have and share their pleasure?  Why immediately jump in and trash the product?  If it's something you'd not buy, fine - but don't put a damper on someone else's joy.

If I was in the market for a fridge and I had the budget you can bet I'd have a unit like this in my kitchen.  It's part of having fun with our appliances.  I have a lot of space in my kitchen and have a regular 17" computer monitor in the corner and pull up all my recipes there.  This might replace it, though  might prefer a regular keyboard than the touch screen type.  Plus I like the weather display, I do have various weather item in my kitchen too, this might simplify that.  I also have an Amazon Dot I use to control the lights and give me news and weather updates, this fridge could replace that too.  Personally I think it's a well thought out product that meets how some of us now live.

Let the OP enjoy his new fridge, I'd love to have one.

I've only ever lived with a partner, and for the last few years alone, so I tend to view these innovations through that lens.

But for a household with children I could see this being useful in establishing routines and documenting schedules because everybody gets in the refrigerator in the morning.

There's a reason most refrigerators in America are covered with calendars, lists, appointment cards and sticky notes.  It's a good place to disseminate that kind of information.

Post# 971965 , Reply# 17   12/6/2017 at 14:39 (2,303 days old) by thomasortega (El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora de Los Angeles de Porciúncula)

Actually the screen doesnt do nothing extraordinary.

we had recipe books in the kitchen, now its digital on the fridge. if a friend wants a recipe, we can share it with a touch of a button.

we used post it on fridge doors, now we can just dictate a memo to the fridge.

we could drive home go to the fridge, open the door and see whats inside if were not sure we need to buy more butter or dalad dressing, now we can simply take out smartphones out of our pockets while in the supermarket and check.

we all always dreamed about those "home of the future" in the 1960s. this is the home of the future today. in 30 years all that will be considered ultra obsolete. but we live today, not in the past.

maybe someday someone said "who needs a washing machine that washes, rinses, drains and spin the clothes? we can live with a wringer washer... or continue washing our clothes in a river. thats evolution.

We must respect the past, there were awesome appliances in the past that are even fun to use, but we also need to understand we dont live in 1800 anymore and LED bulbs are better than candles and gas light fixtures. Simple as that.

And its really sad to see here, in a group of people that share the same love with appliances, where we are not "alone", somebody judging negatively somebody exactly because of an appliance.

it doesnt matter if its moder or vintage, the best or the worst model. if it will last forever or last a couple of hours, it is the appliance that made the owner happy because he achieved a goal. nobody comes here to show off, we come here to share our happiness with our appliances and the experiences we have with them. So please, dont be so judgeamental. nobody is the "own of the truth". and the world would be really boring if we had only one brand and one model on the market.

So lets have fun, lets enjoy the happiness our friend is sharing with us because he got a fancy fridge full of bells and whistles and for free. That was cool. When i get my fridve, my husband and I will work hard to be able to pay for it. and yes, i will come here very happy because i achiever that goal and share the experience and the happiness with you.

If someone gave me that Samsung fridge-would go for it.Just what does the screen do on that machine-not clear as to its functions. It would not make a good TV,who wants to watch on a vertical screen?

Tolivac

It does nearly everything you can do with a smartphone.

No matter what kind of app you need, there is almost always a "cool" version to put in the fridge.

Sounds like besides a fridge-its an electronic bulletin board.Actually that could be useful.I am afraid I haven't spent enough on the cards to get one of those.Maybe we are judging this box too hard.If it suits your needs-SUPER!!!ENJOY IT!!!
