Hey Guys!
Has been a while since we've had an updated detergent preferences. Was wondering what everyone is using, and what's in their "stash." Know that many manufactures like to change their formulas from time to time without informing the buying public. Would like to hear of your experiences and likes, dislikes. Know that there has been different threads from time to time, but would like to consolidate opinions.

I'll start: Am currently finishing up a big bucket of Wind Surf from Sam's Club. Cleans okay but think there is a lot of borax in it, seems to fade fabrics some. Also finishing up a big bottle of Woolite for Darks, cleans about fair but is low sudsing and eliminates the need for a second rinse.
Will probably switch back to H-E-B Bravo after everything is used up.

Last year I had a very bad reaction to Gain, fabric optical brighteners, told my Dr. and he recommended All Free & Clear only. It's okay, but it's no Tide or Persil, don't care for the chemical smell.

My goal is to find a well cleaning, low sudsing detergent than doesn't fade fabrics, and eliminates any need for a second rinse, and is reasonable price wise. A tall order!! Has anyone used Rosalie's Low Sudsing Detergent?

What are you using?

Hope to hear from everyone!!

Barry

I Generally Find

that this subject causes more arguments than it settles.

We just had a cold front come in overnight in the Houston area. It's rainy, dreary, chilly and a great day for nesting-

A&H liquid along with lemon scented ammonia

John, I don't wish to stir any pots, that's not my intent. It's just laundry detergent!!! Hopefully it will be okay. Yes, cold front moved in and the weather is frightful. Going to work on Christmas cards today and get them out.

Benjamin, glad you mentioned the ammonia, it works wonders. Have a homemade pretreat stain formula that I've used for years. In a spray bottle combine: 1 part sudsing ammonia, 1 part dish soap (top shelf brand), and 1 part water. Don't use it much these days as detergents have improved a lot but it's my fall back upon. It's good!!

"Tide Plus Bleach Powder" is the official name according to P&G.

It used to be at my local grocery store but I can only find it at Walmart now.  Would prefer an unscented version but it's relatively mild and mostly gone once the clothes are dry.

$13 for a 53 load box, but I use less than the recommended amount on small or lightly soiled loads.

Happy with this until it disappears or P&G changes it for the worse somehow.

We get 65 loads from a 64-load jug by measuring 1.5 ounces per load with a bartender’s jigger.

Works great at that dose in the Frigidaire Affinity.

I like ERA liquid.  I use a conventional top-loading washer.  ERA washes almost as well as Tide, but has a much milder scent.  The only thing I want to smell in my laundry is "clean"!

The only other things I use in some loads are Borax for odors like shirts loaded with cologne, and regular liquid chlorine bleach in the white underwear load and the kitchen rag load.  I've given up on fabric softer, it seems I don't need it with our water here.

ERA is becoming scarce in some supermarkets, so I buy the big bottles with the spigot at Walmart.  A box of Borax is cheaper there too.

Borax does have bleaching properties

launderess's profile picture
Though rather mild, the stuff does release oxygen when mixed with water. No where near powerful as sodium percarbonate or perborate, but there you are then.

Borateem was sold for ages as the "borax bleacher", which supposedly was a gentle alternative to chlorine or even "all fabric" bleaches.

While borax probably is safe for most colors and or colorfast wash; yes, I'd be careful around darks. More so if using it in warm or even hot water frequently.

big bucket. I like it much better than the Costco HE powder. I'm actually on my 2nd bucket I've been using it for a long time along with Lemon ammonia in lights and colors. I think it does a GREAT job overall. I did miss a shirt that had an oily stain on it that didn't come all the way out, but that same thing happens with expensive detergents too. Next time I wash it usually a little dish soap on the oily spot gets it out - or Spray n Wash.

About the fading - I haven't really noticed this but I haven't really been paying that much attention - so more fading could be a possibility.

Best thing for oil based stains...

Hands down Fels Naptha soap, especially the older stuff before Dial made (many) changes.

Using Fels soap as a pretreat works wonderfully for many things (including ring around the collar and make-up stains), but unlike washing up liquid does not create froth in the wash.

I just opened my box of Gain Original the other week that has been sitting in the closet for probably close to 2 years and was starting to clump. I have two other boxes of Tide I haven't started on yet because I try to use the liquids up first since they have a shorter shelf life.

I’ve been using Persil 2 in1 ProClean for the past couple of weeks. I had been using Tide Ultra Stain Release Liquid and I liked it too, but the Persill seems to clean noticably better, especially on whites. I also really like the scent of the Persil.

I have a large stash of Persil Pearls (both Original and Intense Fresh scents) and 2-in-1 liquid.  Two jugs of Wisk liquid that I haven't cracked open.  Some Tide w/Bleach powder.  A bag of Foca powder.  1 & 3/4 jugs of Fresh Start powder.  Maybe one load left in a jug of Era liquid.

Ultra Clean "Refreshing Scent" liquid detergent.

I think they recently changed either the scent of this detergent or the formula.
This detergent now has such a STRONG scent that even clothes (whites) that have been bleached REEK of fragrance.
I will try the "scent free" formula next time as I don't care for this new scent at all!

Keep the responses going guys! The more the better. I'm a little surprised by some of them, thought maybe the natural bio products (ie..Seventh Generation, etc.) would be listed since there's been a push in advertising and marketing on tv. Also interesting that what is available in one part of the country is often very difficult to find in another. Wisk, Era, Biz comes to mind, for south central Texas. Mexican detergents seem to be much more readily available nationwide, a trend I'm noticing.
Septic systems also play a factor in what is used as well. Water hardness too can determine how well any of them perform.
Strong perfume doesn't seem to be favorite either....ie..Gain Mango Tango.

Eugene, how do you like Rosalie's Zero Suds?

Glen, if I had that much stash I wouldn't need to buy for a LONG time. Where, oh where, did you find Fresh Start?

Keep'em coming!!

Tide Powder. I currently have a box of Tide powder Mountain Spring, but I will go back to regular because Mountain Spring powder doesn't have the same scent as the liquid version, which is the same as old original. I also keep liquid around for pre-treating stains

I had a box of the oxygen bleach version but I found it wasn't worth the extra cost despite the fact we have white towels. Regular works just fine.

I usually have some Oxydol too but currently have some dollar store 1 cup formula detergent. The directions for front load machines actually says to start with 1/3 of a cup and add until suds are half way up the window. I cannot imagine what would happen if someone actually followed that in an HE front loader. I bought it for the entertainment.

My most recent detergent supply was Tide Purclean. It seemed to work well enough for my needs, and I can see buying more. Except...I have a tendency of buying something different each time. I do return to products that work well for me...but I don't have loyalty of buying that detergent and only that detergent forever and ever and ever.

It doesn't seem like many people here have mentioned using Seventh Generation during my time here.

I've used Seventh Generation and other such products, and they seemed to work OK for me. But I used warm water, and my laundry is typically freshening, not really dirty loads. Seventh Generation is priced like Tide, but does not have that cleaning power. At one time, I used it regularly, anyway, because I tend to like natural products. But I quit due to the cost.

I use the Persil Perls on whites, and either unscented Persil or Tide liquid for much else. However, I've also been running through some of my old detergent stash. Here are the empty boxes from the last year and a half (obviously I didn't use the Spic and Span on clothing).

Of the older detergents here, I liked Drive and White King D the best. The AD was virtually useless, but it was REALLY old. Overall, it was surprising how well many of these oldies still performed.

Eddie-- Glad you tried Persil ProClean 2 in 1 and have been getting great results with it. I used Tide Ultra Stain Release in HE front-loaders with excellent results, but found it lost cleaning power in the top-loading Speed Queen. I finished the jug on lightly soiled loads. Been a Tide man for many years, but the Persil 2 in 1 fares much better in the SQ's large volume of water.

I recently bought a 40lb bucket of lemon laundry detergent from Wausau Chemical.  It has 34.5% STPP by weight.  Very little suds, but cleans very nicely.  We're also using Sears detergent in the orange box.

My everyday detergent is Tide HE Turbo Powder, Original Scent. It performs beautifully in my old school top loader but also does equally well in the front loaders I've used at the laundromat for heavy loads.

My mother prefers Tide "Original" liquid, so there is always a jug of that sitting on top of the dryer as well.

I like Persil ProClean Original for towels, jeans, and other heavy loads. It does froth a bit, so I tend to use less of it. I absolutely love the scent of this one. It's simply fresh.

Work clothes get half a scoop of BIZ thrown in for good measure.

For fabric softener, I use just a small drop in the cap of Snuggle Blue Sparkle with the rest of the dispenser filled up with water. It leaves just enough of a pleasant scent behind without being overbearing.

I don't use softener every time or with every load. Towels get softener every other wash, my regular cottons get it every other or every third wash. I think the only thing I use it with every time is my jeans, but those don't get washed too terribly often these days since I don't wear them much.

I use Persil Intense Fresh liquid or Arm & Hammer powder for everyday loads, and Boardwalk Huracan 40 for suds-sensitive/white loads. The Huracan 40 is great for pillows and mattress pads, basically anything that would act as a giant sponge and create air pockets which would cause suds to flourish. I made the mistake of using 1 or 2 tablespoons of Persil on pillows and the suds were phenomenal, and not in a good way.

Post# 972186 , Reply# 35   12/7/2017 at 17:02 (2,302 days old) by washman (o)

Correction, I use the A&H with OXyclean. The plain jane stuff doesn't carry the freight otherwise. With regard to scents, I have no particular preference.

When using ammonia, I use 1/2 to 1C depending on load size. For instance when I wash 4 bathroom towel sets I might use less than half a cap of the detergent with 1 C ammonia. With that dose, the towels don't reek of ammonia when done.  Ammonia seems to be just the right amount of boost plus I can use it to clean my tile floors.

I've also taken to using vinegar in the rinse cycle.  Not sure how much I put in, once the bedding smelled like a jar of pickles but it sho' was soft.

I also use vinegar in the DW. My H2OH! runs slightly on the hard side, but not quite hard enough to warrant an total in house softener, not that I have any place to put it.

Dad's H2OH! on the other hand was soft as could be. He did not have a water softener. Run a full cap of A&H on any load in his SQ and it was suds city.  However he religiously used the 2nd rinse option no matter what.  And I do mean religiously.

His formula was pretty straightforward

Hot wash..for everything  (verify WH is at 140 or higher before starting!)

Wash it all in one load, the more diverse the colors, the better. Throw in a few whites too for good measure.

Pack the darn machine full.  And if that isn't enough, grab a broom handle and stuff the thing like a thanksgiving turkey.

1/2 cap of A&H

2 cold rinses.

Dry on HIGH be sure to crank the dial all the way over to more more more more dry. Add 2 tennis balls to load in dryer.

put away, wrinkles and shrinkage and all.

Repeat with next load. Et cetera.

Oh and use the most aggressive agitation cycle cause by golly that is how mammaw's Maytag worked and by jove her stuff came clean.

Have a big pile of detergents to give to charity this season...I do that this time of year every year. I enjoy buying this stuff too much but can't use it as fast as I would like, so I donate 12-18 bottles or boxes to a couple charities including the Ronald McDonald house in Charlotte.

I am currently using an old non-ultra Tide w/bleach powder in Clean Breeze scent, and a Tide w/Downy liquid, as well as Ajax pods. I expect to finish the Ajax this weekend and start my last bottle of Total Care Tide liquid.

I used to think pods

were largely a marketing gimmick. I have, through real-life experience, changed that view.

I now use Persil Proclean "Power-Caps" in Original.

I had to move recently. I needed a new bathroom (no way at all to remodel my former bathroom..no way at all. Landlocked and not easily accessible.)

To get a bathroom I can use, I had to sacrifice my Maytag Dependable Care team. And my 2011 Whirlpool Gas range with self-cleaning and Accubake, which worked well for me...

This apartment building does have laundry rooms on each floor, I am grateful to say. "Commercial" Speed Queens, with an electronic money card reader on the backsplash. Three washers, a single utility sink, three dryers, and in the corner, a security camera.

Schlepping a jug of detergent or a normal size box is difficult when you're at #106, and the laundry room is at #113.

Therefore, I put a Persil Power-Caps in a zipping sandwich size plastic bag, and whatever extras--Oxi or Borax in with the pod, and throw it (without the reusable zipper bag) into the machine of my choice, which is almost always the lone front-loader.

As for dishwasher detergent-- I have only and always used Cascade Platinum and Jet Dry in this Frigidaire by Electrolux, and so far, no yibbles or rewash.
Even on the Energy Cycle!

I like to try different detergents, but lately have been alternating between Persil Fresh Scent and some variant of Tide. Usually go for Tide because it's on sale or has coupons more often. I loved Wisk, but obviously it's not available any longer. Right now I'm using Tide PurClean and I think it's fantastic! Cleans very well and smells good. Gain now has a "naturals" line so I may try that too. I have a bag of Mexican Ariel waiting for me next. I LOVE the smell of it. Have to see how well it cleans...and it's wicked cheap.

Lawrence-- I had great luck using pods in front-loaders and they are very convenient in situations like yours. Much easier than lugging a jug around.

Have been tempted to try them in the top-loading SQ. While I have my own washer and dryer in this apartment building, they're in a common area and our hours are restricted to 7:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m. I find myself using the delay start feature a lot, so that a load is washed and ready for the dryer when I get home, which is sometimes later than 10:00. The dryer, fortunately is very quiet, so no one has complained when I run it after hours. Everyone on my floor would hear the washer's hum, so I always make sure it will complete the cycle by 10:00.

ANYWAY... I often think a pod or two at the bottom of the tub would be better than having fabrics in contact with full-strength liquid detergent for 8-12 hours before the cycle finally begins.

Tide

I have been using Tide plus Bleach Powder for a white now on anything white or rags. Any items that are colorfast and are washed in Hot get Tide powder Mountain Spring, which smells incredible paired with a Bounce Outdoor Fresh dryer sheet. Otherwise, all other loads get Tide PurClean. I have three bottles of this and love it. It cleans great and smells very good as well. I do not have any sudsing issues like others have mentioned. 1T of STPP is used in every load.

I forgot to mention, my next detergent will likely be Cheer powder. It is very similar to Tide powder but does not contain the OBAs. It doesn't make sense to buy three detergents when one can simply replace them all!

I tend to go between brands within a range. I still have a stash of Tide with Bleach HE powder in the original fragrance so I alternate that with Persil 2 in 1 liquid and the remaining stash of Persil Power Pearls, For kitchen cloths, rags and lightly soiled items, Surf powder in the "spring burst" scent does a creditable job and kind of smells like a vintage detergent. I was using the Ajax pods also, but those seem to have disappeared from all local store shelves - while the Fab and Dynamo pods remain.

lakewebsterkid, I used Cheer powder for a long time and found it to be an very good at cleaning, and I liked the scent too. I switched off of it due to the frothing / sudsing. Too many extra rinses in the SQ. But yes, it's a good detergent.

"It doesn't make sense to buy three detergents when one can simply replace them all!" Totally agree, but don't we all love trying different detergents!! LOL. I'm trying to find "my" detergent, the perfect one!! I'll probably never find it.

Decided for my Christmas present to myself that I'm going to try Rosalie's Low Sudsing. Just got to decide what "flavor" to choose from, unscented or the other. LOL.

Lawrence/Maytagbear--sorry to hear about losing the Maytag set! I know you really liked that set. Hope the new place will over all work out for you.

As for pods in apartment living, I've heard this before. On another forum, a college student praised pods for their convenience in his dorm laundry.

I'm not sure it's something I'd do (and this is only speaking for me, myself). I am such a control freak in the laundry room that I'd probably hate programmed doses! Plus I frankly think carrying detergent is (again speaking for me) the least of the coin operated laundry hassle.

I often think a pod or two at the bottom of the tub would be better than having fabrics in contact with full-strength liquid detergent for 8-12 hours before the cycle finally begins.

No! No! NO!!!! We rescued you from the evil pod world, Frigilux, and YOU ARE NOT GOING BACK!

LOL

There's tons of the stuff on fleaPay. Though being liquid detergent you're paying to ship a good amount of water, but there you are....

I’ve been using Nellie’s laundry soda and the brightener for a good few months now. It’s wonderful stuff. Cleans great, gets rid of odours , rinses completely clear and leaves everything really soft.

I just bought a small box of Surf at Walmart. Has anyone ever used it? Smells decent...more old school detergent smell.

I used Nellie's Washing Soda for awhile on loads of bath towels. The refillable tin was pretty wonderful, too. Believe I bought a tin of dishwashing pacs, as well.

I use Persil 2n1 for color items, and have a stash of Persil Pro Perl's that is used for whites. Works well in my front loader.
With the revised 10 dimensions of clean formula the rinsing has improved, and on my current cap there are now more lines so that gives better control of the dosing. I rarely use the suggested amount and still get clean clothes and good rinses. Happy with it so far.

Right now, in my dishwasher, these, alternating between scents:

I had Cascade or Finish gels, which were twice as many, and also a couple boxes of, alternating between the two, with even as often as I do my kitchenware, I had a lot of, marked down from when I used to work at Walmart, and as in the more you buy, the more you save, as the large sizes these were, were priced like the smaller...

So, these, are almost, as many--likely to be a year, as opposed to YEARS, bought (also on sale) at my job at Kroger... And they, along with my DW, do, do a good job!
