I think there is a perfect anlysis of the topic already

This hits it way to much on the head of the nail...

There is a fad

among college students. They have to take a picture of themselves doing it.

Or I guess the modified version would be. "Life is like a package of Tide Pods, you just don't know when it will kill you."

There have been ten reported deaths from ingesting Tide Pods. Two from toddlers, and eight from elderly dementia patients. College students, well you should just know better.

People, no one should EVER even be making cookies, cakes or candies designed to resemble these Poisonous Pods!

Somehow, my daughter watching all these "You Tube Challenges" has yet to stage a Laundry Detergent Eating Challenge involving the likes of these...

And it isn't because of any danger of her ingesting these that they AREN'T in my house (she knows damn well better anyway) it's because there are a whole LOT of brands that all of a sudden have to make these, store's private-label-brands, too, that make me avoid the Popularity Contests, or those endless Soap & Detergent Commercials pitting a "Brand X" against whatever that national brand, advertised...

There is seriously something wrong with the teen age kids.

Rob Gronkowski is spokes person for the Tide Pod Challenge educating little children not to eat the pods.

So now teenage kids are eating the pods and posting pics on Social Media. WTF ?

I think the manufacturer needs to provide "sampler" kits so the college kids can have a more varied selection to eat. I mean, kids just can't eat enough detergent. Back in the day some kids would have to eat Ivory soap for cussing every now and then, but, it never really took off. Not like 'shrooms or Windowpane.

In any event, it will likely be the end for traditional mouthwash.

But why Tide Pods, of all things? Other than color, they look exactly like Cascade dishwasher soap pods and you don't hear about people eating them.

Action Pacs vs Pods

iowabear's profile picture

The Pods do look tastier and they come in their own candy bowl.

But seriously, P&G sort of forced everyone into the dishwasher pacs because they simply work so much better than even the best powder.  I reluctantly use them now.  But still using Tide powder for the laundry.

I tried a Cascade Platinum pod recently.  It dissolved completely during the short prewash period and generated so much foam that the spray arm movement was restricted.  The next water change being a short prerinse, very little detergent was left for the much longer, heated main wash period (3rd fill).

So, no.

Why Tide Pods?

Why not Gain? Why not Persil?

Going to assume it’s because of the recognizability of the Tide brand. Tide is practically an American institution. Would imagine everyone on the NA continent knows what Tide is.

Even though here in the U.K. we lost Tide back in 1972, would say everyone in the U.K. knows what it is just down to the amount of times you notice it mentioned/product placement in US shows. We know even more so now thanks to this new “craze” (and the news a few years ago about US stores locking up Tide as was being stolen from stores in the thousands).

One point of interest to me, in Europe, these liquid capsules/pods have been on the market since 1997 (starting life as Persil “capsules” and Ariel “liqui-tabs” and never once heard of an injury/death from pod abuse UNTIL the roll out world wide. No idea why that is though.

Dishwasher Pods not as POPULAR?

daveamkrayoguy's profile picture
Maybe it's easier to catch someone going under the sink for dishwasher tablets than to sneak into the laundry...

Might I also say, the scent of those Cascade, Finish, whatever generic store brand to me, aren't anywhere near appealing as the scent of Tide and supposedly those other brands of laundry pods must be... Remember also, the packaging of those laundry detergent pods also resemble a candy jar, as well!

Again, I cannot make up my mind which brand to go with--so many to choose from, and Tide is definitely overrated, that I feel sorry for the underdogs that I have to narrow it down to, but if it's not that, then it's the excessively childproof packaging these detergents are forced to incorporate on their packaging that I am even left with a package that I can't open, or I defeat the means to close, and in either case, am hopefully lucky if I am the only one using these to WASH WITH, and I don't have to count how many tablets are there, each time!

Dishwasher Action Pacs Foaming

iowabear's profile picture

Glenn made me curious so I checked it out when I was running a load just now.  This is about half-way through the heated wash cycle, doesn't seem too bad but I have fairly hard water here.

I used to use the Cascade Complete powder and I like that better because I could fill both the pre-wash and main wash compartments.  But after they took the phosphates out it doesn't work well at all for me.

With a heated wash cycle (I think it heats to 145) and the Platinum Action Pac it does pretty well, no complaints.  But I used a lot of builder grade, featureless dishwashers in apartments and they all did OK when the detergents still has phosphates.  I'm sure they are terrible now!

What do you use instead of the pacs?  Are there powders left that still work well?

Keep them out of reach of children, dogs and anyone adult who fails to recognise they're not edible!!

Haven`t we done stupid things at young age ?
Like starting a serious nicotine addiction just to be part of the cool kids ?

Eating Tide pods as a dare is a bit extreme but I think most of them are clever enough not to get them in their eyes and not to swallow.
Others would climb onto trains and get fried.
Guess most parents would rather want their kids "eat" detergent instead if they could choose.

Seriously, society is finished. When I was in school I could not think of one person who would think such a thing was cool or socially acceptable. I mean I knew kids who did really, and I mean really dumb stuff, but even they knew this could get you poisoned.

Second- where are the parents? I am all for letting kids be independent, but this should certainly involve some strong consequences. If I had kids and I caught them doing just thinking about this, lets just say CPS would be knocking.

And sadly the kids who already have common sense have to be lectured like a toddler on the obvious.

BTW, that commercial is show cringey I doubt its going to do anything.

I was taught by my parents from the time I was able to crawl, that cleaners, medicines, etc. were poison, and would make me sick or kill me if I swallowed them or even put them in my mouth.

Tide pods are a gimmick.

In the summer of 2014, my mom wanted to try a different laundry detergent, and she bought tide pods. They didn't even work, and that was when the 2006 Kenmore front load washer and dryer was in the laundry room.

I don't mind powder or liquid detergent, but I don't really car for tide pods.

Yeah, Tide wants people who eat the stuff to "call them back to see how they are doing". Should read "our attorney's and insurer's want to make sure your dumb-ass doesn't die or try to sue us".

Go ahead and LET the dumbards eat the pods--will only narrow the gene pools!!!There was a story on Fox news about this. They show shots of folks biting the pods and the liquids in them drooling out of their mouths. As ridiculous as the dumbards eating tobacco worms!Yes,they eat those, too! If the worm ate tobacco--would be as dangerous as the pod if not even more.

I use this detergent in my old-school Kitchenaid.  It also has chlorine in it like the stuff from Worldwide Janitor.  So far I a very pleased with its performance.  I can tell a difference when Tony does the dishes with chlorine based gel and when I do them with this.  I think it does a better job than the Cascade fryer boilout does.  I have a water softener and had to abandon using ANY pods/packs in my dishwasher...it would foam out the door!

Makes me think of something equally as dumb, A Good friend of mine ran the furnace service dept for a large oil company in my hometown, one day back in the 60s he said a man called and asked him, Mr Jones, if I mix a gallon of gas with 5 gallons of fuel oil and run it thru my oil furnace will it clean it out, James said Damn right it will clean it out, and hung up..LOL

No! They're not!

They're dangerous! If you want to do the tide pods challenge, do a load of dark colored clothes with blood on them with a tide power pod heavy-duty laundry detergent on the normal cycle and cold water. I did this yesterday with my Kenmore elite front loader with a load of blues, one of which had blood on a pair of jeans. I used the usual normal/casual cycle with cold water with accelawash, auto-soak and 3 extra rinses. My dad didn't see the blood stain again. It was gone. I used 2 pods for good measure, along with arm and hammer scent boosters in purifying waters and downy fabric softener in the bliss scent.

You literally keep on posting on old threads in the deluxe forum index about the old GE Filter Flo machines so on and so forth or how people don’t use common sense, it’s getting kind of old. Even kept on bugging me non stop in the comments section on making videos of the 1963 Whirlpool Imperial dryer I have and kept on explaining on how I was limited on storage but persisted on anyways, even bugged my friend Richard as well and even bugged me about making a video of the Frigidaire dishwasher I have which is newer.

Hi John, I’ll admit I do post a lot about the customized Maytag dryer I put together this spring along with the ‘63 WP MK12 set, but I like to give people an idea what I am talking about. I’ve read many threads over the years (even before I joined AW) and some people mentioned they had a rare and unique machine but had no photos of them, I know some people aren’t very tech savvy which is understandable but I just like to be honest and show what I have. I feel that if I weren’t to post any photos, I feel like I am being dishonest and anyone on the internet could claim they have a dozen rare machine in their collections or claim they have seen every automatic washer ever made.

Maybe I should devote more time and energy to making more videos of my machines (can’t make any videos on the ‘63 MK12 until the timer is sorted out) since I am not too far off from 1,000 subscribers on YouTube and once you have over a thousand subscribers on YT, you will be eligible for monetization.

Technically I have been ‘toning it down’ for the past 200 posts or so and yes there have been a few blips here and there but am considering just not arguing with anyone anymore, would rather devote that time and energy towards something else as mentioned above.

Guys, come on.

AFAIK, AWO is the very best place in the world for people like us (washing machine and applian e enthusiasts) to get together, have fun, exchange information and knowledge.

As soon as we ALL follow the rules (which by the way are not rocket science), I don't see a problem with anybody posting anything they want.

If I'm not interested, or if it's a subject that I don't like or that's not useful for me, I just scroll down and pass to the next thread.

Somebody ate tide pods and farted bubbles? Somebody glued a giant dildo on the top of a GM frigidaire washer pulsator?
Somebody converted a 1966 beetle into an EV? Who cares? It may not be interesting for me, but may be interesting for somebody else. Not being interesting for me doesn't give me the right to ask the person that posted "how dare you post something that I'm not interested?"

I think many people here need to learn the meaning of the word TOLERANCE.

Sean, I don't know you personally (yet, which is a shame considering we're only a couple hundred miles away).

I see your posts and comments here and also your Facebook posts.

I dont see myself driving a vintage car, I don't absolutely love vintage cars, but I always see your posts and I admire how you take good care of them. I even confess sometimes I stalk the pictures on your Facebook admiring those vintage models, many of them I've never seen before because most cars back in Brazil were European-based, except for the Ford Galaxy and the Chevy impala (Opala in Brazil because impala doesn't translate well in Portuguese).
Anyways, please keep your freedom and never allow anybody to shut you up or say you cannot express the way you want, as soon as you follow the set of rules set by Robert.

Regarding the GE Filter Flo, well, maybe it should just go to the imperial to keep things tidy.

John, you're such a nice guy, I had the honor to meet you when I was still a newbie immigrant here, almost 10 years ago. You have such brilliant insights, but sometimes you're a little too bitter. You don't need that, life is too short to waste time complaining about a thread. Just scroll down to the next thread, no drama needed.

Most of the cars I share on my Facebook profile are from various groups or are from various pages, almost all the cars I share are bucket list cars which are cars I’d like to own but that will probably be in the future.

I actually may be picking up a ‘66 Ford Galaxie 500 4 door hardtop this summer or fall (below the TOL LTD) and while it may need some work, the thing that it has going for it is the 289 in it, wouldn’t be surprised if it has 162,000 original miles on it. Once it’s all fixed up and transmission replaced, probably can make it to 200,000 miles easily.

If anyone wonders why I don’t have any photos of me on my Facebook profile or anywhere on the internet, it’s because I am very private and don’t want some crook to use a picture of me to do nefarious things or to create bogus accounts on Facebook or any other social media site that’s out there. Just don’t trust anyone out there since unfortunately there’s people like that out there unfortunately.
