I'm very excited as i finally found a 1960's model ( I think) GE FF washer with a lighted console andd mini wash - its neat! more pics to come tomorrow! It has a turguoise tub and programmed cycles - needs a belt and some cosmetic work but overall not a spot of rust! Can't wait to check it out tomorrow after work and take pics for all to see. In the mean time- anyone in the northeast want an alvocado FF to have as a tinker toy - it works great and I enjoy using it but no room for all of these. let me know! Matthew |

That is my exact machine - but only has a bleach dispenser. I'm so excited because it is in near perfect condition - i have no idea how it works mechanically until i get to go up to my parents tonight and check it out. I hope its only the belt because thats what it appeared to be unless there is a tranny problem. I also need to replace the back of the backsplash because they bent it badly when they removed it from this womens house. Luckily i have another from an old dryer that i can use. I will post pics tonight after i get home from playing with it. Who knows - if i get a Dispensall i'll maybe give up this one too... |

isn't the fabric softener an extra thing that you put on top of the filter flow? |

Wow Matt, what a find, I LOVE that model! The programmed cycles and the little Osterizer-style modifier buttons are just too neat! Does yours have the Ramp Activator as well? |

If you ever do get your Dispensall, I'd like to put dibs on this machine. I've always wanted a blue-tub GE so I can outfit it with my white spiral activator/mini basket/filter and make it near perfect. I'm assuming your machine has the "Timed Bleach Dispenser", yes? Also, if convenient, when you post pictures please take one of the tub and the model # plate. Oh, and here's your matching dryer: (actually, it's from a couple of years previous to your model, but matches better than the contemporary mate). |

I got it working in no time at all - it actually took me longer to replace the back of the backsplash as the original was damaged (dented) in the removal i'm guessing. They had also cut the cord so I had to replace that too. Then I had to replace the belt which was a cinch and it was ready to test. It has no leaks and no rust from what I can see - I didn't take out the iner tub but I looked with a trouble light all around the outer tub and also from what i could see on the inside with the top up and it looks prefect! When I plugged it in and turned the knob the light lit right up and the motor hummed like new - i love it!

I actually think this is a brilliant way to include a soak cycle and an Extra Rinse one the same machine without have to separate them. This is an ingenious design i think. The cold water wash option over rides any other temp selection and offers cold wash no matter what fabric care button is selected. Extra rinse extends the cycle naturally and soak uses the extra rinse cycle with no agitation. I think its brilliant but then again - I am a fan...

here you can see the simplicity - instead of all these cycles - its all and only one cycle and you select the rest from the push buttons. This is great for the people who always set the timer to the same thing anyway - it just makes sense. I'd hope they take the time however to read the lid instructions which clearly outline what temp selections come with which fabric care buttons. Note the * suggested permenant press setting... I believe that would be 8 mins... You COULD be a total washer head of course and start in on pre wash and also use the extra rinse for a total of four fill/ agitate/ spin cycles. And not to mention half a reservoir of water! But why not..... |

can someone help me understand what to do to fix this problem? When it starts washing - the lights dim and it has trouble getting started - it eventually gets moving and runs fine - is this the transmission or the clutch? Also it doesn't start in low speed and then kick into high -the slow speed is when it runs poorly then it quickly jumps to high and runs fine- i think this is a clutch problem. I probably need to replace it - and am considering doing the same for the transmission. Since this is a 16lb machine would that equate to a "large" capacity tranny as compared to an 18 lb which woul be "extra large"? any help would be appreciated... Thanks! Matt |

Nice washer Matt! It's also nice to hear from you again. I'm green with envy. Will your mini basket work with this machine? What year do you suppose this machine is from? |

I'm so turquoise with envy! I was wrong, I thought your machine was the first of the GE "Heavy Duty 18" series, but it looks like it belongs to the previous model year, and that dryer spec scheet I posted IS its mate. And no, I don't have an operation sheet for your model, but if I find one, I'll let you know-I'm always looking for GE literature. Also, I believe that machine has basically the same innards as the V-12, -14 series which means, if you want to, you can outfit it with a spiral ramp activator(which works much better than the straight-vaned ones). Congratulations on a great find! |

Matt, that is one cool GE. I think those "meaty" lid hinges are the best. That blue tub is fabulous, the rubber clad wire basket ring is delux. Where are you keeping it?...., and of course, let's don't forget that beautiful "cool white" light!!!! |

Thanks for the messages- lets see... Yes I was using an unnecessarily long extension a big orange one and didn't realize it would make a difference - now I'm thinking- DUH! But I will also check the motor relay. I don't think its the motor as it runs fine - but the relay sounds like it could be a culprit... We'll see - and I'll of course report back. Yes Sorry I haven't been posting - i'm still not quite sure as to where i want to settle next in life and so I'm a bit ungrounded. I've had alot of stuff going on and haven't had much time for online stuff. I'm connsidering LA next to do some work in art direction in the film industry. Taking my washers will be an interesting feat - across the country that is. I think I'd take THIS one and leave the 18lber to my mother until i decide what i'm doing or where i'm staying. I'd love to outfit this with a ramp activator but i'd want it to be a black one and i only have a newer white one set aside for an extra large cap machine so it won't fit. But, the mini basket that came with the avocado machine fits fine and i'm keeping that one. The new ownner will have to find another one - IF ANYONE EVER COMES AND GETS IT! (hint hint) Oh plus i have a jet-swirl fab soft. disp for use as the detergent dispenser with the extra wash option! Oh and thanks bajaespuma - I'd love whatever you found! And BTW- your illustrations are second to none! I'll write more tomorrow when i really finne tune things and check the motor relay. Howdo I know if its bad? Oh and what do you guys use to polish these things? - Car wax I remember seeing someone say once - let me know! Matt |

Matt, if I ever get my hands on another black ramp activator I'll send it to you; my parents had one that I put in one of their old GE washers to improve its performance and, as usual, they threw it out without notice(I could live the rest of my life in luxury on what they threw away through the years). Could you post the model number of your prize? |

No, unfortunately it didn't. I don't know about the 1968 TOL model but the new 18 lb. capacity 1970-71 TOL models had a light blue tub (matching the 18 lb. activator) , the "Versatronic" model had it too, and then the models changed. We bought a TOL GE model in 1972. At that point the "Programmed" models had been eliminated; the straight-vaned light blue 18lb. activator remained but the tub was back to speckled gray. IMHO it was the end of a grand era for GE. The unusual feature that our machine had, which I haven't seen since, were solenoid-operated bleach and fabric softener dispensers mounted on both the left and right hand sides of the tub--they worked magnificently and solved the problem of dispensing softener when an optional 2nd rinse was chosen. I think our machine was the predecessor to the Dispensall. An unusual "powdered detergent dispenser" (which looked like a space-ship)took the place of the activator-mounted softener dispenser. It sat on the filter-flo pan which was then oversized and had a depression in the center for when the detergent dispenser would "fall" after the pre-wash spin. It was a gizmo--it worked though. If I ever find the literature for this machine (and I'm trying hard to sift through all the storaged stuff), of course I'll post it. |

Well, I spent all of yesterday polishing and perfecting and i can now report that this is one of the nicest machines i've seen. Not only in its beauty but in its brlliance. I love the programmed cycles and the timed bleach dispenser is awesome! Once the timer hits 6 mins remaining in the wash cycle - the solenoid clicks a little stopper open in the 1.5 cup tank/reservoir and it drains completely. Then it snaps shut after a few secs. Then at 4 mins and again at 2. Its really brilliant. Why in our age of technology these things don't exist anymore i have no idea. I scrubbed it up and touched up the porcelain chips and now all i need is a new font leg and it truly is a showpiece! I still need to repair the clutch i think because it still kicks into high speed after only a few seconds of slow - maybe the shifter arm or spring or solenoid is bad - but for now - i don't mind the one speed until i can really take the time to take it apart. thanks for the well wishes.... now to find me a Dispensall! Matt |

Hi Keith - That Servis machine looks very cool - i love the agitator modifier - very neat. I see why you want it. I remember when i lived in London- we had an asian washer in our first flat then a Hotpoint in our second. I preferred the Hotpoint naturally. Did a much better job. I also remember walking along a side street... as I am wont to do ;-)... and noticing a laundromat with toploaders. I was surprised to see this and even more surprised to see upon closer inspection that they were american MAYTAGS! in harvest gold no less - I couldn't believe it. I didn't have my camera on me but i would have taken a pic. Of well - I'm sure its still there - though which dark alley i was exploring that day i'll never remember... It was a little piece of Americana in London. Right next to a Chippie.. go figure! |
