Hi! I'm new here, and hope y'all can help...I'm resurrecting my vintage Maytag Wringer Washer. I used it for several years about 15 years ago, then stored it until today, when the 3rd (or 4th?) 'modern' washer died without warning. Delighted (and surprised!) that the engine still runs, but there are some things that need help fixing:
The agitator sorta works – I think the inside of the agitator that fits down onto the shaft in the bottom of the tub is quite worn, making it agitate intermittently. I’m hoping to find a replacement that will fit more snugly and agitate consistently when the agitator activator button is pulled out?!

The bearing hanger for one side of the wringer is broken, so I need to replace it. The serial # is L133785A - and a 'how to date your Maytag' page says that's a 1959 Electric (Model E). It has a turquoise agitator and the agitator activator knob on the front used to be red (I think). The name/model plate is illegible now, but serial # was stamped into the body of the washer, and the bearing hanger has Maytag K-1290 on it. I'd sure appreciate any help/advice where to get the bearing hanger so I can use the wringer, and a source for new wringer rollers when I need to replace them.

The wringer swings freely - it doesn't lock in place. I found a ziploc with broken pieces in it that I apparently saved when I put it in storage (whew!) and I think have pieced them together right (?) They seem to go on the wringer head around the shaft, but I'll need one of them (no clue what to name it) and instructions how to put it in correctly once I have it. Here are pics of what I pieced together and where it looks like it goes. The right tab has small teeth on the side toward the inside of the wringer head and has K-1436 then Maytag with an 8 under it (in case the pic isn't clear). The spring and cotter pin were in the same bag as the broken bits, but I have no clue where they might go. Again, any help/direction would be most appreciated!

Thanks in advance!
NJK

If the metal bearing part you're after is this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-ONE-VINTAGE...

Then have some stashed away, but only the holders, not bearings.

As for the rest will have to look. There are also several sources on eBay (a wonderful Maytag wringer repairman from upstate New York sells parts there), and others located elsewhere. In particular an Amish dealer in PA area, but since they don't do Internet you'll have to either go in person, or work out something via telephone and snail mail.

Aside from the bearing hanger

The pic shown looks like what's called a index slide.
This is what locks the wringer into position and is a fairly common part to break. Good news... both are very easy to replace.. You need to get a new ones.. Sure you can.
You can also get a new agitator.
Look for Phils Maytag in Ovid NY if you get a hold of him, tell him what you need, hel list the parts you need on eBay as a buy it now

Dear, since we're talking Maytag Wingers how are you doing with yours?

Thank you!!

Laundress and Stan - thank you so much for the responses! I messaged the ebay seller about the bearing holder and hope to hear one is still available. :) I also messaged Phil in Ovid NY to see if he has the index slide and/or agitator. I do appreciate the help! I discovered the agitator issue on the first load I tried, so have done one load in my ol' girl and hand-wrung them - I'd forgotten how much muscle that takes!

Y'all have a great weekend and thanks again!

Hi Stan!

launderess's profile picture
Haven't given the old girl a work out much, though may haul her out this weekend.

Just setting things up takes awhile so if it is just a small load and am feeling lazy just bung things into the Miele or Oko-Lavamat.

Spring cleaning will soon commence, so can see using the wringer for blankets, quilts and other things before they are stored for summer.

Once you get those parts you should be good to go. A broken index slide makes it nearly impossible to use the wringer and a little dangerous as the thing weighs about 30 lbs. if you try to use it broken, it can swing when it's not suppose to. Be carful

Update :)

The bearing hanger will be in the mail tomorrow morning!! Thanks again, Laundress, for sending me to ronclara on ebay. He was so nice to work with. He doesn't have any other parts, though, and I haven't heard anything from Phil in Ovid, so if y'all have any suggestions where to look for the index slide (Stan, I never would have guessed what it was called lol) and a new agitator, my ol' gal will be up and running like new.

I appreciate the help - y'all have a great day!

Update again :(

Just got an email through ebay from Phil in Ovid - simply said 'I'm retired'... passing it along.

Ok, leave us try this again.....

One said that one had plenty of the bearing hangers, but not the bearings. Implication being if you wanted one would happily sell a few on.

Phil in Ovid "retiring" is not good news, you'd think he would have let people know or something.

Lucky me!

I did get the bearing hanger (I have the bearings, so no worries there) and thank you for the ronclara link.

If Phil in Ovid is retired, can you point me to anyone who might have the index slide for the wringer (the piece that Stan identified above) and an agitator? Those are the next things on the 'wish list' to get her fresh as new. :)

Have a lovely evening...

Davesrepair.com
Too bad about Phil! He was really nice to work with.
Also try googling Idex slide for Maytag, see what comes up

Dave's repair is also retiring from selling parts. I looked on there recently.

Glad you found one...

thanks, Stan, and I'll check it out! The bearing holder is supposed to be here by week's end and I'm excited :)

Hmm okay. I may want to call there too to see if they still sell parts. That info is from 2002 but I looked up the phone number and that name is still connected to it.

Yet another update... :)

Moving along here...wringer bearing holder installed (after chiseling out about 3 lbs of hardened clay the mud dauber wasps built inside the wringer!)and the wringer wrings (hooray!) and apparently Phil in Ovid isn't entirely out of business because I just bought an index slide from him on eBay (another hooray!) I'm so excited!! I backordered the stop ring for the agitator shaft from Maytag (completely surprised they still had one and knew what I was talking about!) and since the splines in my turquoise agitator are chewed down to nearly flat, I'm looking for another agitator.

One problem, though - I can't find a part number for the agitator printed/stamped anywhere on mine, but I'm sure it had one at some time. I have found an aluminum agitator on eBay stamped with 'Maytag' and 'K-1281'. The splines look great compared to mine, but since the underside looks a little bit different, I'm wondering whether this apparently? older one can replace mine.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated - I'm not sure how long this opportunity might last, and don't want to miss it if it's a viable option.

Thanks!!

NJK

My oopsie!

Well, hubby found the part number on mine - A-4525 - and the underside of the aluminum one is different enough I'm betting it won't work...must be from an older model.
