This weekend, while out of town, my wife texts me this photo and asks - do you know what these are?

She mentioned that the pair was sitting curbside about three blocks from our house. I didn't want to ask her to try to haul them home, so the waiting game kicked in to see if they were still there when I got back to town this morning.
Why yes, yes they were.

I have no back story to this set other than they were in a rental house. Water was frozen in the tub (yes, it is snowing here on 4/08/2018), and someone attempted a timer repair on the dryer. It's missing the timer dial and the guts to the timer and they sadly didn't have the foresight to throw the parts in the dryer drum.
The rare blue agitator was still in tact, as well as the tabs on the dual dispenser! While not in as great of shape as say Kevin's set, this is a feature PACKED machine. So versatile compared to the '61 daily driver Whirlpool that I finished restoring last fall. CLICK HERE TO GO TO swestoyz's LINK This post was last edited 04/08/2018 at 20:34 |

Both appear to have been made in 1968 - the 16th week for the washer, and the the 48th week for the dryer. This post was last edited 04/08/2018 at 19:56 |

I sadly threw away a dryer panel that would have had a good timer for this dryer during my move in November/December, so at this point I brought the dryer home because of what it is. It's way too cold out right now to diagnosis why water was standing in the tub, but once it warms up I'll give the belt a tug to see what is going on. Until then they are safe and sound from any ill scrappers.
I'll post updates here once I have more info about this really cool pair. The two way dryer door is really awesome!
I know beggars can't be choosers, but why couldn't the dryer have been GAS, and the washer have been WHITE?!?

Two things on a Whirlpool washer that you'll never get back: The Magic Clean Light (going on when filtering the lint, I would guess) and the individual speed selectors, unless the post-'90's D-D machines are supposed to count...
Also neat how there's even a hand-wash selector on the water-level--an answer to General Electric's Handwash setting on its Filter-Flo, but without the Mini-Basket...! I think both the washer & dryer are neat finds & I would be willing to overlook the difference in colors, too--you scored a great find, and FOR FREE! Restore them both to optimal ability, & use them always, in the best of health... -- Dave |

Thanks for the kind comments, everyone! The idea of a 50th Anniversary had not even cross my mind, but it most certainly is!
Pete posted the brochure for this washer several years ago (thank you!), which has answered quite a few questions for me about the washer. It looks like the wood panel was standard on the Avocado and Coppertone versions, but the white cabinet had the wood panel omitted. Who would have guessed? Sadly of all the late 60's and 70's colors, Avocado is my least favorite but the oddity and the complete over-the-top flamboyance of the washer leaves me impressed with how agile Whirlpool was to the trends of the day. I do love a good station wagon with some wood paneling.... The panel/dial lights are on when the timer is turned from an off position to ON, and I can assume that the dyer is the same, with the addition of the door opening switch activating the lights. I'll need to confirm once I have power to the dryer. Speaking of the dryer, a local friend knows of a 1968/1969 Supreme 80 dryer that I might be able to rob the timer from. I'm hoping to take the guts from that timer and insert them into this one, but we shall see. The dryer is a push to start from the 5 button selector to the right which might complicate things. I'm also really curious to visually see what the hand-washable cycle is like. I love how Whirlpool is throwing shade at GE, "No special attachments, no gadgets, no gimmicks"! LOL The washer does have a 3 speed motor, and the two speed selector feels in tact on the dryer. I've seen how the shifting is done on the earlier non-bulkhead dryers, so I'm curious to see how Whirlpool did it on this platform. I'd love to convert this dryer to gas - I do have a 30,000 BTU modulating burner on hand... muahahaha. Ben CLICK HERE TO GO TO swestoyz's LINK |

Nice find! I have a similar Inglis Royal 100 set from 1972 (unfortunately, the Canadian TOL washers were just two speed in the early seventies, they had been 3 speeds before and went back to 3 speeds for a few more years after 1973).
Mine has a bad inner tub, it still works fine but there's a hole in the inner tub. I got one that's not white from Paul but I'd like to get a white one like that. I think mine has the same agitator (save for the chrome cap which Inglis didn't have). CLICK HERE TO GO TO PhilR's LINK

Quick update -
After downloading and reading through the 1966-1968 Whirlpool Service manual (which is conveniently available on AE.org), it appears that these are 1969 model year machines, not 1968, due to the T designation in the model number. Learning something everyday! 1962 - 1969 have been verified with Whirlpool documentation, 1970 and on from the URL link below. CLICK HERE TO GO TO swestoyz's LINK

Yes, Handwash-ABLE, it's called...
Just about every Magic Clean had the light that goes on when the wash/rinse water is draining, right? Someone here had a Whirlpool--RCA Whirlpool--of that vintage featuring that LED, which I wish could have stayed... Once again, keep what you can original & working purr-fectly, and congratulations & good luck on these washin' 'n' dryin' treasures!!!! -- Dave |

Hey Ben, awesome save!!! Hard to believe people would send those to the crusher. I have never seen the blue Whirlpool Surgilator before — very cool! Hoping you can cobble together a new timer mechanism for the dryer. What a deluxe pair! Too bad the dryer isn’t in Avocado/wood grain like the washer but who cares — beautiful!

Interesting, in the ad it indicates you can change out the wood grain panels. Wonder if they are reversible like some of the vintage WP dishwashers. |

Did 60s Whirlpool washers fill and agitate simultaneously as did Kenmores from c.1964-76, or was it just filling? When did they replace that sequence with the pause feature? |

Wow Ben what a great find, a few thoughts to questions
When WP switched to the more durable polypropylene agitators from black Bakelite they used a blue tint for the first two years till they switched to pure white PP.
The filtering light on the washer is only on when the washer is agitating and collecting lint.
Even though these are both built in 1968 they are considered 1969 models, like car companies appliance manufactures often brought out next years models early.
On these WP 2 speed dryers when switched to gentile the heater wattage is reduced from 5600 to around 3800 watts [ on gas models it went from 30,000 to 20,000 BTUs and a cable operated air damper in the lint-filter housing slightly reduced air-flow. WP did not use a modulating burner in their gas dryers like WP built KMs often did with only about two brief exceptions.
Ben I have the same dryer in gas and in coppertone [ if your washer was coppertone I would be driving in your direction now ] Funny thing I have had the dryer for over a decade but I also wanted a gas one, so I drove all the way to Georgia to buy a gas one only to discover that when I got home that the one I had in storage was gas all along. I stripped the one from Georgia because it was very tired, but saved lots of parts so I may have what you need to fix or even convert yours to gas.
This washer and dryer were truly the best all around machines you could buy in 1969, the only slight fault was the washers spin speed but the outstanding dryers fully made up for that if you compared these machines to what Maytag, GE-HP, Westinghouse and others were offering in 1969.
These 1969 WP Mark-12 machines were the automotive equivalent, of a Chrysler New Yorker, or GM car like a Buick Electra, Ford products to me were always the sister to GE appliances, and I guess that leaves Maytag and Rambler together, and I have a soft spot for American Motors cars.

Hey gang, thanks again for the kind words!
The weather has been miserable over the last few weeks, and with the set being out in the garage they haven't gotten much attention. Today the weather was beautiful, allowing a free moment this afternoon to check things out. The washer was able to pump the remaining water out under its own power, although it struggled with a severely slipping belt. The bearings sounded pretty good and the motor tested out fine. The florescent bulb in the washer was burnt out, so the dryer lent one for testing. I was surprised to see that Whirlpool had provided a lens between the top panel and the tub, allowing light to illuminate the wash tub. I had no idea Whirlpool did this on these models. I wonder how long this feature lasted, or when it began? It also features the dual pressure switches for the hand wash cycle. All in all, the washer is in pretty good shape and it wouldn't take much to get it going again. John L - I may hit you up for parts if you happen to have a spare panel around from the dryer you parted out. I'd love to get this dryer going. Ben |
