shorter cycle times - the longer a cycle takes the less money that machine is making for the shop owner.

smaller capacity - Tub sizes may be smaller on the standard machines or they may have reduced water level.

cycles and options may be limited. You most likely won't find a soak or pre-wash cycle for example.

Some machines may not have a delicate cycle. Therefore they could rough house your knits and other delicate items.

Often times they will use thicker gauge metals. Slightly more powerful motors, beefier belts. Maybe more porcelain coating on certain parts. They'll often use more "Drab" looking components, but will be functionally the same.
"black vs. turquoise" Maytag agitators between the 'mat and home.
