I took this video a few minutes ago, but here is how the purge works on a KA machine. There is just enough water to go through the spray arm and back flush the fine/micromesh filter chamber.

I think this is a similar process goes on inside the Whirlpool machines. It’s a similar setup with the jets on the bottom of the wash arm and the filter arrangement.

When I had my 22, I think, I used to stand there with 4 quarts of scalding water and dump it in the machine after it finished filling for the purge then quickly restart it. It provided enough circulation that it was almost a first rinse and it all drained out before the drain ended and the fill for the real rinse started. I had no residue on the racks or dishes and my racks did not rust.
