After finding out my childhood washer was beyond repair :0( I decided I needed a "rebound washer" to make me feel a little better..(great excuse right?) So after a little stroll through "Shopper's Square" I found a CL ad for a free WP on the Cape. (Thank you Laundress for posting this!) I contacted the "seller" and he said he'd had someone else interested in it but he would let me know if anything changed. Well much to my surprise, he sent me another message saying it was still available. So.. Saturday morning I dragged poor hubby out of bed, hopped in the trusty little Sonoma, and drove 112 miles from here to North Truro Ma. I almost passed out when I saw it! the CL ad pic was good, but did not do it justice! what a beauty! The very nice gentleman had pulled it out of a summer cottage he was working on, and just couldn't toss it. All of these pics are pre-clean up. I will post a video soon! Very Nice Condition WP Washer

combo52's profile picture

Congratulations Scott, This washer would have been assembled on the 9th week of 1970 in the old St Joseph Michigan factory. WP washers were getting pretty good by the late 60s and often had very few problems for years.

This looks to be a very light use machine and it may work well for quite a while without doing much to it, however there a a few areas that should be oiled [ clutch pulley and water pump bearing & cam bars greased ], and if you want to tear into it a little we would always pull the inner basket and replace the top spin tube seal and oil the center-post bearings.  You can also deal with any rusted places in the outer [ if any ] much more easily before the machine begins to leak.

WE used to get a lot of low use machines in like this that we would resell and we found out the hard way if we did not do some preventive maintenance on them and just sold them that when they went into regular use they often only lasted a few years before the main bearings were failing from water getting into the center-post area.

Beautiful machine - quite a catch. It's almost heartwarming how many "sellers" hold on to these older machines for a good home. Several of my units came from people who didn't have the heart to throw such beautiful appliances out.

Thanks also to John L. for his tips on washer care.

Congratulations Scott.  I was sorry to see youir childhood washer was beyond saving.  I was hoping you'd get this one.  At least you still have all the paperwork from your childhood washer.

Hot wash

Hot Wash with Warm Rinse, those were the days. I love Cottage washers that got infrequent use.

Congratulations on your new find. Although not your childhood washer, this is quite the consolation prize. Best of luck and enjoyment with it.

Have a good one,

Congrats on your great new washer. I grew up with coppertone appliances and got very tired of the color, but it's growing on me again. Hope you enjoy it, it's a great washer.

Very nice washer! One of my neighbors had one that looked a great deal like yours, except in White.

Microphone on my phone is poor, machine is much quieter than it sounds. Surface rust on base plate looks worse as well

Scott, thank you for the video.  I almost cried.  Just watching brought back so many memories of Kenmores with the waterfall lint filter--and there were a number in the first 10 years of my life before the self-cleaning filters became more common on WP & Kenmore models.
