So I picked up a kenmore top of the line washer for free- triple dispense and catalyst system.
I did a test load and in the spin cycle the tub almost jumps up and down. Does this mean I need a counter balance spring?
Second, I notice some oil on the base. Does this man I need a new tranny too?

Eventually the balance ring is broken and the "oil" you see is actually the balance ring fluid.

Open the top and check the inner part of the cabinet if there is any spray marks. This is rare but not impossible.

The jumping spin basket probably has nothing to do with the oil on the base. This era had some instances where the lock nut on the drive would work it's way loose and allow the basket to "flop" around, eventually not spinning properly. It's best to replace the basket drive block and lock ring, and possibly the spin tube as the loose hub could wear down the tang that it was supposed to be locked onto.

Hold your horses

LOOK first. Diagnose the problem. Look under the machine, there should be 3 springs around the tub and one in the rear.

Move the tub from side to side, do you hear any liquid?
Jiggle the spin basket. Does it have any movement Independant of the outer part?

Ok, found by looking the suspension plate was turned around- so I fixed the jumping/ balancing issue.
The bleach and fabric softener doesn’t fill with water on the triple dispense. Any ideas where to look in there?

The out of balance may have disconnected the hoses. Who knows?
