Still using the Maytag Neptune, and it's working fairly well, but on a few occasions I've noticed an acrid burning smell after the final spin. I would normally think bearings, but it spins smooth and very quiet. Has always been on a large load of normal clothes, regardless of temperature. We usually use the Cotton/sturdy cycle with extra rinse and Max extract selected. It doesn't smell like burning rubber (belt) or the motor/electronics, I've never actually smelled anything like it. Just a sharp, acrid smell that kind of burns my nose... Today was the worst, I smelled it out in the hallway. I was washing a full load of mixed fabric whites on warm with Tide and bleach.
The funny thing is, I've washed huge loads of bedding, even a king size comforter and not a whiff. The washer still works 100% fine for probably 20 loads or more between incidents, no odd sounds or smells. I'm at a loss as to what is wrong with it, it's random, so very hard to diagnose.. I do know the smell is the strongest at the dispenser (could just be the top of the machine) but I can also smell it inside the drum, and around the machine. The smell is not present until the spin cycle and then only the final high speed spin. The clothes don't seem to smell (other than detergent..) And we have not noticed any stains or marks on anything. The machine does knock on long wash tumbles, especially with hot water, but never when spinning, and the machine has always made that noise. We've had it about a year. I wouldn't be heartbroken if it's time for a new washer, but money is kind of tight, so we will likely use it until it dies (if it's safe to do so) if it's a major problem.
