I'm sure everyone who read my other posts is ready for me to make a decision and be done! TL;DR at the end!

Well I passed on the Miele I asked about. Thanks everyone for that advice.

I called the local SQ dealer and they said no front loaders any more ever, only stacks, or a commercial FL and it would be 2-3 month wait for that.

Then... the stomach virus hit my home today. When you have a lot of little ones it can be a big mess. Thankfully my 11yo has made it to the bathroom without incident but if/when the younger ones get it - well, I'd better have a washer by then! And it would be great if it had a sanitize cycle!

So we arrived back home today from a trip and (as the virus hit) I got on the phone and online. Basically there is only one independent dealer of appliances within 1.5-2 hours and they don't deliver on weekends. They also mostly have the new SQ TL and Maytag TL... they did have an Electrolux and some whirlpool and Maytag FL. I considered the Electrolux but they don't have it in stock other than the floor model which isn't white (my preference).

Maybe it's the economy but all the big box stores were out of immediate stock of the white Electrolux and any LG I wanted (with turbo wash). They could deliver in 1-2 weeks.

I found a Best Buy warehouse that has the LG 3770 available for pickup tomorrow - and it's only about an hour from here. No delivery available though. So my teenager and his friend are driving there in the morning with a diesel pickup and a dolly to load it and bring it home!

Is there anything I should know about installing? Other than getting it inside it should be simple - attach water hoses, place drain hose, level, and plug in? Any special tool for leveling the washer feet?

Lastly EVERYONE is out of the matching dryer around here. Best Buy *may* have it by 8/18. DH is wondering if I could get a better quality dryer for less that wouldn't look completely silly next to the washer (we see them from our kitchen/dining table). I know the whirlpool/maytag dryers were recommended. Unless anyone has specific favorites I may look at one of those. Otherwise we will use the clothesline until we get one.

I so appreciate all the advice and opinions. So helpful. My preference was a SQ front loader but I need something now and the turbo and sanitize options would be nice to have. Oh I did buy the 5 year Geek Squad warranty since we put so much wear on appliances. I can cancel if someone knows of a better option - this was only around $159 I believe.

TL:DR Ordered an LG 3770 to be picked up by a couple of teens tomorrow morning. Advice welcome wrt transport and installation, dryer, and extended warranty!

one more thought

I believe these can stack, so I could put a second washer in the laundry closet... but how would one reach the controls at the top of the dryer? Has anyone done this? I would like to have this option.

If it's too tall for you, get one of these step stools.  As far as installation, the owner's manual should tell you everything you need to know...how to set it up, hook it up, remove shipping bolts if it has them, and level it.

You will need to remove the shipping bolts from the back of the machine, should be 3 maybe 4.  Other than that noting special to do.

A Well Reviewed Machine - Good Luck!

iowabear's profile picture

Found this from www.reviewed.com/laundry/...

"A magnetic door stopper keeps the door slightly ajar between cycles, to prevent the mold and mildew stink that plagued many early front loaders. This is much safer than the trick many front-loader owners have had to employ — leaving the door wide open between uses, to let things dry out."

If only Maytag had thought of this...the trouble they could have saved themselves...

Only one advice:

Read the manual from cover to cover!

Post# 1001686 , Reply# 6   7/28/2018 at 01:11 (2,089 days old) by Meldew (Georgia)

Thanks y’all. I will do all above^^^

Frantically trying to pick a dryer at 2am... think I will sleep on it!

Super excited. If I couldn’t get the SQ in time I’d narrowed it down to this vs the Electrolux 627. This was slightly better-reviewed, slightly less expensive, slightly more available. I think I’d be happy with either.

Agreed...

... Absolutely DO read the User Manual from cover-to-cover...

Especially the initial 'Installing the Appliance' section, which usually mentions transit bolts/brackets/bars, levelling of feet(and locking them), water hoses, and any special 'First Wash/calibration cycle'.

When I got my latest front-loader (another brand altogether) about 18 months ago, I did the following:
- removed the packaging;
- removed User Instructions, hose, etc from the drum;
- read Installation Instructions section;
- lowered machine onto its back, extended both rear feet to 5mm each, locked them tightly in place;
- put machine upright, and removed transit bars;
- fit any supplied covers over the transit bolt holes (where available);
- carefully attached fill hose to machine (careful not to misalign the threads);
- manhandled the machine into position, attached hoses to water pipes and drain;
- extended and adjusted front feet, using a spirit level not only on the lid, but also on the front panel and side panels.
- I have a worktop immediately above the machine, but if you have nothing above it, also use the spirit level diagonally (corner to corner) on the lid. And alter the front feet accordingly and lock them in place. The machine MUST NOT rock at all.
- run a calibration/wash cycle. This can be important, as different manufacturers have special instructions. Some manuals might say to use a small quantity of detergent to remove any manufacturing residues; some may say not to use any detergent at all. Other manufacturers possibly require a 'special calibration programme sequence' to be run before doing any wash whatsoever.

Well done, and good luck!:)

Wow that is a lot! I will have to kindly send the teens on their way after bringing it in the house and slowly do all this myself, as they are the type to forge ahead and read later. I will be fine except maybe for tipping the machine on its back but we’ll figure it out I think. I understand now why professional delivery people do all the setup outside. This is going in a narrow hallway. And I’m a little nervous about the boys getting it up the stairs. The pros use those straps that rest on their backs and go under the machine. I’m hoping the dolly will make it up the stairs!

Where is your laundry cupboard? Upstairs (not on the ground floor)?

Post# 1001717 , Reply# 10   7/28/2018 at 08:29 (2,089 days old) by Rolls_rapide (.)

Oh, and don't remove the transit bolts UNTIL the machine is within a few feet/yards of its final location position.

This is because the freed internal suspension can cause wobbling pendulum effects as you try to lift it up stairs etc. Basically it fights against you.

Post# 1001720 , Reply# 11   7/28/2018 at 09:10 (2,089 days old) by meldew (Georgia)

It's on the ground floor but there are either 7 stairs up to the front door, or 3 coming in the garage door but not sure it will fit in that door.

best advice would be to 1 measure the door to see if the set will pass and 2 if this will help would be to remove the door to get the set in then after the set is in put back the door?

OK I will - I purchased a Maytag dryer too - basic model with lint screen on top - panic mode purchase so I hope I don't regret getting the matching dryer.

Melissa, sorry the little ones got the tummy ache.  If you feel like you need the Sanitize Allergiene, or Whites, use them.  Normal has Extra Hot as a wash temp option, but it still won't be as hot as Whites cycle.  Given Normal is the energy Star cycle, Hot will barely be warm on this cycle.  Warm will be cool to tepid at best.  When I use my Normal cycle, I always select Hot because this cycle uses so relatively little water the temperature of the water quickly cools down.  The speed/quick cycle, it's quick because it defaults to light soil.  Also there is probably no spin between wash and rinse.  My quick wash does a wash, drain and rinse, spin, final rinse, and final spin.  If you are pretty intent on using this cycle, added an extra rinse or two.  LG washers can allow you to select more than one extra rinse from what I understand.  also, investigate what types of cycles are available through the download feature.  Also remember, these machines are pretty intelligent.  It automatically adjusts cycle times based upon size, weight, and composition of the loads. That Maytag dryer is a very good dryer.  It's based on the tried and true Whirlpool dryer design that's been in production since the mid 1960s.

Well the LG washer was a breeze. So easy. The Maytag though. I don’t know. After unboxing I noticed a dent on the side. When installed won’t see it. Then there’s an area on the base that didn’t get spray painted and looks like it could be starting to rust. Then the legs. One is mid-shapen so it installs at an angle. Lastly I didn’t notice from the picture online or they changed their design but the top slopes downward which prevents me from setting detergent or folded clothes. I’m almost sure it wasn’t that way in the picture. :(

Can’t take it back as we’ve cut the box up and I can’t ask the boys to go back. I’m just going to take a deep breath and live with it.

Take pictures of the dryer, call the store, ask to speak with the manager and request a discount for damaged goods. I’ll bet you dollars to donuts that you’ll get a nice discount after you’ve sent the manager the photos. And if you can’t see the dent, so what. As for the area tha may be starting to rust, if its also in an area that can’t be seen when installed, just get some white Rustoleum paint and touch it up. Maybe the cockeyed leg can be bent back into the proper position.

I’ve had appliances delivered that had slight damage, that couldn’t be seen once installed and the store has always given me more of a discount than I would have requested. Give it a try, you’ve got nothing to lose. If they get nasty, just tell them you’ll be returning the damaged dryer for a complete refund and then get another one some where else.

Eddie

Congratulations on your new washer.

THis model is excellent and I'm sure you will also love it.

Run away from the "normal" cycle, use hot water and bleach always you can, leave the door ajar between uses and you'll never have issues with mold.

Why didn't you buy the matching LG dryer? Clearly Whirlpool's quality has gone downhill. A dryer in that condition should have never left the factory in that condition.

Washer = easy, Dryer = not

That's often the way things happen. The seemingly complicated machine install ends up going like clockwork, and yet the apparently simplest installation can be riddled with problems.

Could the dryer have been one of those 'seconds' (cosmetic damage goods)? Personally, I think some stock-centre warehouses are a little on the rough side when dispatching goods to the stores.

Just make sure that the dented side is not rubbing on the drum as it turns.

And it should be possible to obtain another adjustable foot from the manufacturer.

But as Eddie says, complain to the store first.

If I read right, you bought the LG washer. I also bought a LG fairly recently. Mine has Turbo washer, and steam. You will find that it is better to leave the turbo wash feature on all the time. it ensures better saturation of the clothes. The steam is great for stains, as well as the Sanitary cycle is great for homes with sick folks. I use the sanitary cycle for my whites, set on extra hot, and they come out exceptionally white. Hugs,

David

Just an update...

I’m LOVING the LG 3770! So far the cycles are much shorter than the older LG from a few years ago.

Thanks above for the advice on normal cycle. I used sanitary on a couple loads today. I had also tried normal but bumped water to hot or very hot; I don’t remember.

I’m not a fan of the quick wash from my older machine. Stuff NEVER got clean but I did read the whole manual last night and learned the express wash is only for 2-3 items? I used to use it for everything.

So today I did a long wash probably normal with hot water, used 2 tablespoons tide (not turbo but does say HE) and two tablespoons Biz. The water was sudsy during the rinse cycle. Did I use too much? Must have. I was able to pause the machine and add a second rinse.

I wish this thing had a light! I sat on a stool shining my phone flashlight into it - smoke colored porthole glass. I only noticed two turbo wash sprayers working. Also can I do sneakers in this? What setting for the odorous insoles?

The dryer - wow someone mentioned “tinny” and I thought it was a misspelling. Nope. This thing is loud. My kids are noticing. BUT it dries a ton and seems plenty fast. I do have to slam the door to shut it. It sounds like a tin can in use. But so far it’s keeping up with the washer. I’m doing triple the size loads I was doing in the SQ top loader.

To someone above: I don’t know what’s was up with the dryer but my big box stores all had “out of stock”. Best Buy said may get more third week of August but I decided to try to save a little money and not worry about the aesthetics. Not sure still if I did the right thing.

Here are some pics from yesterday.

Please let me know if I’m overreacting about the Maytag. Honestly I’m so thrilled with the washer. I knocked out a ton of laundry in no time. Thanks everyone for the advice.

No matter what it says

on the backsplash, Maytag is now a division of Whirlpool. That is a Whirlpool designed dryer, and they are usually a favorite in these parts.

I understan that you needed a dryer, and it's cool, but I think you should put it on Craigslist when you have confirmed that the matching dryer is in stock.

Furthermore, if you keep the Maytag dryer, you won't be able to have the 2 on 2 laundry room you were talking about. However, if you have changed your mind about that, do try to get satisfaction from BestBuy.

If you keep the dryer at least get  a decent discount on it for the issues.  I too would opt for the matching LG dryer at some point.

I’m thinking I’ll sell it and get the LG eventually. DH is not going to believe it lol! I’m not sure I’ll need the stacking now with this capacity and my teens slowly moving out for college and careers. My family at home is shrinking!

But I almost wonder if lg is replacing the model. Now I can’t get it at B.B. either.

Oh my!

well, I suppose most things have a time, place, and purpose. I'm certain that WP dryer didn't leave the Marion or Findlay Ohio plant dented like that. I think Clyde only assembles washers.
Seems the retailer or delivery expediter needs counseling on some type of etiquette. They may have even dropped it causing mechanical damage.
Poor baby.
Counseling can be good, so they don't end up left on unsuspecting door steps, or worse?
At times, I may be off topic, but at least try not being rude. Common sense and logic have their places as well, and can avert some division of school of thought.

My Maytag dryer is the model just under yours, the difference being that yours has moister sensors to defect the level of dryness, mine has a thermo sensor. And I might add I replaced my LG dryer with this Maytag. In all honesty, I like the Maytag much better. It drys faster and more accurately, never any damp items left when the dryer cycles off using the Auto Dry. The LG took longer and had way more settings than I would have ever needed or used.

So, if you can get a fair discount for the damage, and you don’t mind having a mismatched set, you may want to consider keeping the Maytag, if you are happy with its performance.

Lastly, I totally agree with you. The comment made earlier by another member about Family Planning was rude and uncalled for. The size of your family is your choice. You have every right to be offended, and I’m sorry that this comment was made, you didn’t deserve it.

Thanks for the input. Snarky comments about family size are kind of surprising given the public outcry today against online prejudice... but I have pretty thick skin and know that not everyone has a "filter" in place so to speak ;) . It's okay - I guess I also might resent someone who has umpteen children and is supported by my taxes. I hope my family is giving and serving though, not sucking at the government teat lol. My younger children are well-behaved and respectful. My older kids are already involved in medicine, politics, missions, research, and I hope they'll continue to be blessings to others. I do have more teens and 20-somethings than I mentioned! :) They don't all live in my home though - some have flown the nest.

Back to the reason I came here... I am getting ready to go to Best Buy and speak to the manager of my local store and show him the pictures and ask for a discount... The machine DOES dry nicely. I will admit I'm a perfectionist and hate paying $600 for something that's not factory-perfect! And I'm trying not to care about appearances. I like the accu-dry feature and NEVER used any of the extras when I had an LG. Actually the steam function was pitiful and left wet spots on clothes.

I'll lyk what he/she says!

YES! I do have a rotating old-fashioned clothesline! I go through spells of using it and not using it. I can't fit more than a load at a time on it and it's so humid here with showers almost every afternoon and evening... In the fall and the spring it's brilliant though. Thanks for reminding me. I need the kick in the pants to use it sometimes.

Also a shout-out to Magvent dryer vent - they make the magnetic vent connectors for dryers and I misplaced half of mine and they are working with me to get the parts I needed within the week. It's such a great idea - you just push the dryer into near proximity of the vent and it connects. Love it.

Apparently I wisely decided long ago to block this "Bob" person's posts from view (I don't even know who he might be at this point) so I didn't see what he wrote, but it just validates my decision.

As for your Maytag being tinny, that's nothing new.  When we bought an Amana set in 1997 (Speed Queen clones) the dryer was a rattle trap from day one.  I had a service tech out early on while the machines were still under warranty.  He happened to live nearby and was a reasonable guy and easy to talk with about appliances.  He told me -- lo, those 21 years ago -- that dryers are "just tin" and not to expect the Amana to be anywhere near as quiet as our trusty Maytag HOH had been for 25 years or so until its bearings began to squeal.

Definitely pursue a discount or full replacement from Best Buy due to the defects on your Maytag.  I have to wonder if employees at the factory get dinged if they kick a machine out of the packaging queue, so they send them out to market with defects instead.

Melissa,

I couldn't respond earlier as I was trying to leave for work and also at work today.  I was mortified to see the rude comment above.

Yes, I do believe the 3770 is being replaced.  LG has just started placing their upcoming models on their web site--and thus far the 2 upcoming new ones don't have TurboWash, but I expect subsequent new models will.

If you're ever curious as to what the wash water temperature is on a load, there is a combination of buttons that will show the temperature in Celsius.  I don't have the combination, but I would imagine some of the other LG owners can provide that information.  Another button combination will yield spin RPM speed.

Personally, I'm very thankful you have a  large family.  Appears your family has been bountifully blessed on all sorts of levels.  I will put you and your family on my prayer list for God to continue to bestow His blessings upon you and your family.

And remember, if you have questions, you know you can always ask and we will provide the information you seek.

resolution!

Thank you so much! Raising children and teens is so exhausting but I can't imagine anything different. I really need endurance and wisdom to get these kids raised :) . Laundry and cooking is the easy part. Thank you for praying!

Well I spoke with the store manager. He was very kind. He offered two things. One, I could get them to bring a replacement and take the old one away. Two, he'd pick up the one I have and refund my money.

So I opted for the matching LG dryer. They think they'll get one on August 20. Hopeful! They'll take this one back. He didn't even want to look at my photographs! He was very understanding and said about 5% of the appliances are shipped with damage unfortunately.

So I will have my matching set with the possibility of another washer or dryer down the road if I stack these. Really excited. Thanks everyone!

I like how

even though your FL washer isn't on a pedestal nor is it matching, that they are basically the same height - aside from the back raised panel of the dryer.

I'm honestly not sure how 2 tbs of detergent would cause suds. I guess I'm used to my duet over the years hardly creating suds at all, and I use more than 2 tbs. I wouldn't think that's enough. I kept a scooping cup when I bought a huge bucket of sears power a long time ago, and I usually use 1 and 1/2 of those. It's not a large scoop and some here probably know what I'm talking about. I'm thinking if you saw suds you have soft water.

You're right, you'll be able to knock out a LOT more laundry with that FL washer. EVEN IF you only fill it 75% full with dry clothes, which is what I do. I will have what looks like a huge amount of laundry to do. It looks like 5 loads, but it ends up being 3 loads, and my duet is smaller than that LG. Be sure to pull that detergent cup out and drain it if there's water in there and leave it pulled out too.

I second calling Home Depot. Keep what you've got but get a discount on it. I was able to do this with my side x side fridge. It was like $1098 total and there was a super small dent in the front that I noticed AFTER it was installed. They gave $110 back for that.

Melissa, you are most welcome.  Glad you are taking option 1 and hopefully will get the replacement dryer by the 3rd week of August.

Mark, maybe she had suds residue from the previous washer and that caused extra suds.

It's funny (odd) that they'd let a machine leave the factory with such defects. The unpainted/corrosion defect is alarming.

As for the bent foot and dent, perhaps the conveyor belt speed in the factory is set for a quicker throughput (that wouldn't surprise me in the least), leading to bashing, thumping and crashing. That might also explain the half-paint effort.

It's good your retailer is a decent chap.

The planned parenthood comment was uncalled for, but 99% of the membership here are gay blokes (I'm one of very few straight blokes here!), and there is a segment of gay males who can be very bitchy, especially about kids and families. I'm guessing Bob is one of 'em! Oh well. I could say more, but this forum isn't the place for arguments about population growth and sustainability!

I'm gay and

Love kids. I helped raise two. Gay blokes have kids also, especially these days.
They also adopt.
My spouse is also of Italian descent, and the pressure to give mom and dad grand kids is still very prevolent.
Well now I'm a grandpa too.
Some straights used to give me grief, calling me an abomination.

Also, uncalled for! Especially when you are aware that many members are gay males,myself included. Discretion is the better part of valor. Why would you want to purposely offend other members?

I said a segment, not a majority! I have some gay friends, none of 'em are bitchy, but I have met a few gay guys who have an outright loathing of straight people and their families. Tiny unrepresentative minority, I'm quite sure!

Wow I’m surprised the tangent this went on. I don’t care about someone’s orientation or choice of family size... this was unexpected. I haven’t personally experienced dislike or judgment from the gay people I know. Maybe it’s a regional thing more than a cultural thing. I guess you learn something every day!

I see we've rolled out the welcome mat for you, Meldew. Us collectors can be interesting folks, to put it mildly.
