Help! I have a A506 Maytag washer. I replaced the lip seal, reassembled and now the washer is off balanced and making weird noises. I must have did something wrong! Any ideas?

By lip seal you mean tub seal?

The tub may not be centered properly and is scraping up against the outer tub. Is it a scraping sound?

Thanks for the reply! No scraping sound but definitely off balanced.
We purchased the A 506 Maytag washer in 1987. What a nice machine! A couple of years ago when I was repairing the dryer I noticed oil under the washer. I have some time now so I decided to try and fix the washer. BTW, the washer was working fine before I worked on it. Should have listened to my wife!

The seal I replaced is the transmission lip seal. you have to remove the brake assembly. I didn't use the special brake removal tool that is suggested rather a large pair of vice-grips and hammered it off. I had to hammer at least a couple of revolutions before it came off. Once I put everything back together I tried washing a small load. It kinda worked. I know the tub spun faster than I had ever observed. So I tried washing a regular load and the tub was so off balanced and making some unusual noises it eventually could not complete the cycle. I think I didn't hammer the brake assembly enough to make the spring inside the brake assembly compress enough. So I'll try that and let you know.
dumb question- how do you center the tub? Thanks, Pete

Any chance you damaged the brake assembly with the vise grips? The way I've done it is by hammering using a drift or wood to hit the brake on one of the lugs.

Doubtful the inner tub got knocked off center.

I'd suggest double checking your work on the brake and lug stop setting. Also, while down there add a teaspoon of oil into the brake package.. Also, check the condition off the damper pads. They may be dry and/or worn and could make the machine seem off center by transferring the motion of the tub onto the base plate.

I think I fixed it! I had the stop lock key on the transmission pulley- off of where it should have gone. Initially,
I tried tightening the brake assembly, it was tight. When I removed the pulley I noticed the stop lock key was funny looking. I repositioned the key and now the washer works like it should. The Maytag washer is 32 years old.
I am out of the doghouse!

Yes, goodshepherd, you're right on. It was the lug stop setting. I'm sure the damper pads are worn but I didn't see them. I wanted to add oil to the helical transmission but didn't see where to add oil. I did replace 2 bearings and lubed everything I could. Thanks again.

I'm sure the damper pads are worn

Good job.

Here is a link for lubing damper pads, lubing them now can avoid a major hassle down the road. Regular silicone grease is fine and can be found at automotive and plumbing supply stores.

If you can handle replacing the lip seal lubing damper pads should be no problem.
