But it sure is a cool looking machine. That's cool Patrick, how did you come across this one? It certainly looks to be in "good" condition. |

Yank open the top panel and put the snubber back in place----that will center the tub. Be sure and "rough up" the (flat side) snubber on a brick or rock so it will work better. Pretty Whirly! |

Hi Patrick, that is just fabulous!!! I believe what you have there is a very early production 1956 model of the 1955 Whirlpool washer. You can tell it's a '56 by the Surgilator agitator, in '55 they used a Straight Vane agitator. Is the agtator cap painted?? Here is lots more info for you, please keep us posted on your restoration and we would love to see some action shots :)... CLICK HERE TO GO TO unimatic1140's LINK |

Patrick, beautiful and congratulations. The advertisement Robert posted (the cover) mentions suds saver. I wonder if the toggle switch is suds saver. Is there a Suds Return space on the timer? Otherwise, it could be a water saver switch for starting agitation for smaller loads rather than letting it fill up all the way.

Darrel - I owe this one to (Brian) Northwesty in Seattle who tipped me off. It was a craigslist ad that had no pictures and just said Free Vintage Appliances. The guy didn't return my calls for a week and so I assumed they were already gone. He called Saturday and so I went right over. Glenn - I can't wait to get the top off and see what everything does. I think you're right about that being a float switch. Steve (Gyrafoam) - Thanks for the tip about the snubber. I'll take more pics as I tear into it. Robert - I agree, this machine is fabulous. The ad does say "most wanted by most women"!!! I can't wait to see what features this machine has compared to what the ad says. Thank you VERY MUCH for posting that ad. It tells me a lot. Austin - Thanks for the parts offering. Should I need anything I'll let you know. The motor has a raised GE logo on the bottom of it. Funny! I noticed the water temp and wash speed switches on my Maytag say General Electric as well. Guess they didn't mind sourcing parts from each other back then. Ben - I was thrilled to see the familiar Surgilator in the machine. I have always loved that design and think the newer design they replaced it with is ugly. Steve (mayken*)- I owe it all to craigslist and Northwesty. It's great when members can help other members. Rickr - Thanks. I can't wait to see if the lid release button lights up the way yours does. Doesn't yours even open the lid automatically when the cycle is through? Bob - I am very interested in finding out what that switch does. I don't think it's a suds saver because there aren't 2 drain hoses. When I plugged it in and turned it on, it didn't seem to have any effect when toggled back and forth so I'll have to see where the wires lead to. I'll keep you posted. Thanks All - More to come. Patrick |

I too am amazed at what looks to be like-new condition underneath. Looking forward to more pictures of it up and running. The old man must have taken good care of his machines. Best of luck. |

Unfortunately there is no shine left to the interior of the porcelain tub but I guess you can't have everything. I'm not sure if the previous owner painted the agitator cap or if that was original. It's definitely black underneath. One problem: the pump didn't want to turn at first so I had to get it going by turning the shaft with a pair of pliers and spraying into the shaft with WD40. The pump shaft has a zerk fitting on it so I think if I grease it, it should run better since it didn't seem to pump quite fast enough. Now just have to get a grease gun. To really make it look nice it should be completely repainted. The top is not porcelain that I can tell and looks as though the original owner repainted it himself. There is one of those "Bondurite" finish stickers on the back of the cabinet so that is probably what was used instead of porcelain. No lights of any kind unfortunately but it's still pretty cool. Amazingly quiet too for a machine of this age. Love the clunk of the solenoid when it changes from agitate to drain to spin. OK, I'm exhausted now. Hope you like it! Patrick |

Looks great! Cleaned up beautifully. Has the agitator been spray painted silver? It is strange to see the black coming through. I have seen Whirly's of that vintage with a kool "marbleized" red and black agitator. |

I was pretty tired today as I spent most of the day yesterday working on the machine. The agitator cap looks to be spray painted silver to match the aluminum agitator and I'm not sure if that was factory done or not. That's why it looks a little worn with the black coming through. It really doesn't have much rust on it and I think that was due to the climate controlled basement it was in. The owner must have fiddled with it quite a bit over the years as his calling cards are everywhere in the form of paintbrush strokes everywhere inside the cabinet probably to touch up rust and little pieces of masking tape identifying where each wire went to inside the cabinet. Maybe the former owner was a washer fanatic too and just couldn't leave it alone. If so he'll be happy to know it fell into good hands! Thanks to everyone for all your kind comments. I enjoy sharing this with all of you. Patrick |

Never knew that WP made metal agitators-Surgilators no less-imagine if they chrome plated it!!Wonder if the aluminum one would fit my WP Imperial.-it has a chromed metal agitator cap.Like the "Areonautical"-"bullet" one in that machine. |

The washer should have a germicidal "ozone" lamp behind the lid button, but it may have been removed. The wiring diagram shows one, and that thing that looks like a transformer near the the timer is a ballast for the germicidal lamp. The agitator cap was painted silver to match the agitator at the factory. |

Thanks for the info. I'll have to pop the top and look for telltale signs of the missing lamp. There definitely is not one there now, not even wires or a socket. I had not really analyzed the wiring diagram since everything seems to work so didn't even notice that. I was just assuming this was a BOL model and that's why so many things were different from the ad that Robert posted. I'm still trying to find those 7 rinses! Patrick |

I'm sorry. I was so focused on reading the ad itself, I didn't see the link. I have just looked at all of it and when I get home I will see what the previous owner has done to all of these options. I never saw a light holder but now I know the buzzer is still there as well as the "choke coil assembly" (which seems like an odd description). I also think the wiring has been "messed" with because the loom or harness in the diagram doesn't look anything like what's actually in the machine. Thanks again for posting the ad and the parts list. You are an invaluable source of information. Patrick |
