I got my Viking washer "running" (thanks again to potatochips for the wiring diagram).
It seems when I wired things I did some damage to the motor, as evidenced by the smoke and the fact it runs for about three seconds in five minutes.
I do have another motor and clutch, but the motor output shaft has the centre shaft of an old clutch rusted on, and I have not been able to get it off.
I have used penetrating oil and hammered and pried as much as I dare, so as not to damage the motor, with no luck.
Does anyone have any advice, either about removing the shaft, or if I need to look for something causing the new operating problem?

Getting a stuck clutch driver off a GE washer motor, you can try heating it briefly with a torch to just red hot or cut the driver off the shaft with either a hack saw or a drimell cutting tool.

I have a couple of newer GE filter-flo motor and clutch assemblies...

I second what John said. They can be a royal pain to remove!

I considered heating the shaft, but I have used heat with various things in the past with varied results (more often less desirable results).
I thought about using a dremel as well.
Of course, all my fragile little cutting discs have long since shattered.
Looks like a-shopping I will go.
But, I do like the frustration-relieving aspects of teaching rusty parts a lesson with a hack saw.

If I killed the current motor, I may take you up on the proposal.
I have to exhaust all current avenues before I can justify it to my wife.
