Awkward to see the knobs on the Tappan cooktop at the back. Shouldn't they be at the front or was this usual?

Southbend

Looks like it would be meant to be away from the cabinets.

Is that hood above what the old commercial exhaust hoods were like? Looks very old and looks like an ILG ventilator fan under the hood. Most of these hoods I've seen have a rocket shaped fan on the roof or on the outside wall, is this fan how these old hoods were vented? I don't see any filters or a fire suppression system either.

We had a 1964 Hotpoint cooktop (also in pink) that was configured this same way - all of the knobs were on a slightly elevated area at the rear of the cooktop.  I don't think it was that unusual, at least back in the day.

Louis, if you look at the positioning of the surface units, the 8 inch units are at the front. Positioning the controls at the rear not only keeps them out of the spatter zone from frying since the 6 inch units are usually used for saucepans while the larger units were used for frying pans but it also gave more room for the controls than if they were placed between the larger units. It also gave some work space to place spoons, spatulas, etc. on a spoon rest.

My Aunt Doris had a Tappan cooktop (Pink) that had the controls along the right side. It was original to their 1962 house.

My mom had that Tappan (branded Youngstown-Tappan) cooktop in coppertone--had 7 fixed heat switches. Wasn't a bad cooktop, a little tough to clean as the top was fixed. She had a little trouble finding a replacement when they redid the kitchen--I seem to recall helping her shop and there was a Maytag and a Kitchenaid (Chambers) which would plug-and-play and a Frigidaire perhaps too. I think the Kitchenaid had a slightly higher output burner than the Frigidaire so she got that.

Tappan knobs

They look awkward to me too. If you have two large pans on the front you have to reach over/around them every time you adjust the burner. If the whole unit was flipped around the small burners would be in front with the controls. less chance to burn yourself (picture two large canners or stockpots on the front burners)!

I agree with Jeffrey, the controls are hardly elevated, the big pots are at the front, the smaller ones at the back. Not only are the controls hard to reach, but also the smaller pots. It doesn't make sense to me.
