Well I took today to relax and work on my Dispensall. With the help of some advice from Coldspot66 I was able to replace the old motor with the one I removed from the old Avocado FF I just junked. That Avocado machine came in really handy afterall. I used its mini basket for my 68 Programmed GE, The Motorto get the dispensall working and the plactic silver knobs to replace the old ones on the dispensall. I got some touch up paint and pianted everything that needed fixing and a few other bits but they came out nice. Everything else was ready to go. I had it working last tuesday and was very excited but it still needed some cosmetic help. Today I got to get her shining again! I've also photographed the dispenser tank in action for you all to see... here we go...

The Tank - EXPOSED!

geextrarinse's profile picture
here is the elusive tank that we will finally get to see working.

I took it out of the lid and placed it over the opening where it would be with the lid closed

A Little colour for your viewing pleasure

I thought this might make it easier to see that was going on

but boy what a mess it made

Prewash cycle

geextrarinse's profile picture
this is the beginning of the prewash cycle and the water doesn't yet operate the dispensall. This would simply wash the detergent from the FF pan when placed in the upper right dispenser opening. The stream of water is very sloppy and makes a mess - this is why i think lint eventually got everywhere and made these machines more of a pain that a pleasure.

Regular wash with dispensall

geextrarinse's profile picture
Here is the water flow for the regular wash cycle - that water moves the water towards the right to correspond with the port on the tank that feeds the detergent and bleach dispensers.

reg wash with tank

geextrarinse's profile picture
here you can see the water flowing into the tank - it divides itself to go through a covered chamber to the detergent dispenser and also through the centre to trickle into the bleach dispenser. There are a few holes on the way to the bleach dispenser so as to not flood it all at once. it fills slowly to dilute and trip the syphon as the water continues to rinse it out. You can see how sloppy this actually operates. It does indeed work but is overall a rather clumsy design.

and into the tank

geextrarinse's profile picture
and no... ther is a rubber seal that would not let the water run into the bleach dispenser again so what you see here wouldn't happen with the lid on.

Looks great Matthew!!
Thanks for sharing the detailed photos. Never saw one of these machines, so I had no idea what the "tank" even looked like.
You have a very nice restored classic there! Have lots of fun with that!

PS: One can NEVER go overboard with a favourite! <:

Then we spun it all out...

and rinsed with bleach...

the machine is fine and i've dyed many things with rit -they don't harm the washer at all unless you repeatedly use it and don't rinse properly but i ran the extra rinse cycle with bleach and all was fine.

i look forward to your questions. this really is the neatest machine to me - and the water sounds it makes while running through the lid is so much fun - it just seems like such an indulgent machine for a GE fan! ;-D

Matt, great pictures, I'm surprised at how simple the tank really is! Glad to see your dream machine up and running again, it cleaned up really well!

I like the turquoise clothes guard, agitator, and Super Filter-Flo pan...wish mine had that!

Matthew, thanks!! Greg tried to explain this to me when he had is dispensall sans tank. When I saw u opt for slow wash, slow spin, I thought, what's going on. Now I know, keep the dye splashing to a mminimum.

Thanks Guys!~

geextrarinse's profile picture
I'm really having fun with it!. I can't wait to hook it up inside where i can use real Tide detergent in the dispenser. I have it outside my parents garage now and it drains into the back yard. I use biodegradable detergent for the lawn. But I think it will replace the FF in the basemennt next to moms and we'll really be in business!

If I happen to come across a video camera I can borrow I'll take a few videos.

Have a great week!

Matt

Excellent pictures, another mystery revealed. The dye was a good idea to show water movement through the dispenser tray too.

Great job cleaning her up too, it looks like a million now! Have fun with it!

Thanks !

Hey Matt, enjoyed the show. I have always wondered exactly how the dispensall dispensed it all....

Question: You said the water flowing to the bleach was slower. How long into the wash does it take before bleach starts dispensing into the wash water ? Tom

That is really a great restoration! I really like how you did the lettering on the filter pan----thats the best looking GE filter pan I ever saw!

Special thanks for showing how the Dispensall lid works. I have never seen one in action.

That is truly a grand example of a GE!

Thanks everybody!

geextrarinse's profile picture
and to answer Tom's question - I'd say the bleach dispenser trips the syphon after about a minute of washing - its actually timed very well. It says on the lid instructions not to use more than a cup as to not trip the syphon before its ready to drain - into a tub of dry clothes that is. Then the water continues to flow thru it and rinse it out- by the spin cycle the dispennser has completely emptied and is ready for the lid ot be lifted after the cycle - but ingenious as they are - if you lift the lid during the cycle - there is enough room in the tank too hold the entire contents of the bleach and fab sftnr dispenser without spilling into the machine! They thought of everything!

i do need a video camera!

somedday....

RE: GE. DISPENSALL

Great photos of the Ge. Dispensall. Ge. is my second favorite washer. Would recommend these to anybody who ask my opion if they couldn't get a Norge then this was the next brand I would tell them to get. Third choise was a Speed Queen. This was in the early 90's. A friend of mine had bought a new Kenmore and was unhappy with it and I told her to call her sales person and tell her this and swap it for one of the Ge. filter-flows, but she didn't do this she just put up with the Kenmore. Can't wait for video footage of the dispensall in action. Bye for now Danf. a.k.a (Norgeman).
