Re Gold Medal They had some great recipes, but Gold Medal flour is about like trying to bake with plaster dust,,lol, I tried it and never could do anything with it, im used to a soft southern flour | ||

Air Holes in My Cake As if there weren't already enough things to worry about...
Mrs. Mile's Apple and Bacon Muffins (#20) sound pretty good for fall.
Very enjoyable set of ads!
Actually the only baking I have ever done is the Betty Crocker "Stir'n Bake" cake mixes. Everything came in the box, including frosting and even the little pan you baked it in! Haven't seen them for a long time but I know I still made them in the late 90s. There was a carrot cake one I liked. In the 70s they were called "Stir N'Frost" same all-in-one concept. Sort of surprised they are not still around.

Saturday morning I was always watching cartoons as a kid and my mother would make me one of the same Swanson turkey dinners that was sooo good as a kid at noon on a TV table. Poor mother thought salt and pepper was the only seasoning in the world, but I have graduated and can experiment with lots of different things every night. No TV dinners in my freezer anymore.

I grew up with TV dinners. I rarely ate what my mom cooked. I was really fussy. Mortons, Swanson, Banquet, Kid's Meals. Nothing made me happier than sitting down with a Kid's Meal (with miniature hotdog and fries) and a ice cold glass of milk to watch The Partridge Family or The Odd Couple on my trusty Zenith. Fond memories. | ||

TV dinners were a treat for us kids that we got to have when my parents were going out for the evening, otherwise we never had them, Mom always cooked dinner. Except for Wednesdays, when my Dad went to his Native Sons of the Golden West meetings and wasn’t home for dinner. Then we went either to Foster Freeze or Flips drive ins, Casper’s Hot Dogs or Mom would get Chinese food at Violets New China Tea Garden.
My favorite TV dinners were the Swansons Roast Beef with the new potato in each of the three corners of the meat section. Or the Baked Ham with the Raisin sauce. These were the days before they had the extra little section with the cranberry sauce, brownie or whatever. Eddie | ||

What a repulsive idea, Hot Fudge on a Baked Potato, yuck. Or the suggestion to pour it over cubed cooked potatoes and sprinkle with cocoa. I doubt that this idea ever got off the ground,because this is the first time I ever heard of this, and I’ve seen some weird food ideas in my 67 years, but never this one.

Chocolate potatoes 
Can't even imagine that being good.
It reminds me of a potato chip flavor from probably a few years back. One of the Lay's experimental flavors was cappuccino. I thought, I like coffee, I like potato chips. I'll try them. When it first hit my taste buds, all I got was the cappuccino powder on the surface. Not bad. But then, after chewing for a bit, the potato flavor kicked in with the coffee flavor. I made Floating Island once as a newly wed to impress my new husband. It was OK, but not something I would say that I crave. Much ado about nothing, and not worth the effort, in my humble opinion.
But it did impress, because David still talks about it to this day when ever we see someone making it on TV. He’ll say, “You made that for us”. Eddie | ||

Now look at that! That certainly got new followers with all the one pot pasta recipes all over the internet!
Floating islands is great, but you have to make it with a "real" custard with lots of egg yolks and no cornstarch. And especially not with oil! What on earth does that oil do in there? Louis, will keep in mind to make a picture when I make that sauce. Don't know yet what to do with it. lol. And will use my own mayonnaise instead of Hellmann's. | ||

I made the Hellmann's sauce from Reply# 72. After warming up the sauce it didn't have the tangy taste from the mayonnaise anymore, but that made the sauce quite bland. I added lots of mild curry powder (more like a tablespoon than 1/2 teaspoon) and a little turmeric. That made things much better. I found the sauce on the thin side though. If you are going to try this, start with a lot less milk than mayonnaise. It was an easy sauce to make, but ofcourse it's rather fat. It curdled up a bit in the beginning but when the sauce got warmer it didn't need much effort to get a smooth sauce. I had the sauce with brussels sprouts and a small minced lamb pot pie (ready bought). Here are some pictures.
