Hello!
I haven't posted on here in a couple of years however I picked up a matched Maytag set the other day. The machines came out of a house that hasn't been lived in for about 15 years due to the well drying up. the new owners had the set priced at 600 and then went down to 300 and I was able to snag the set for 250. upon getting the machine home, plugged in and filled with water i noticed that the transmission has kind of a whiny whirring sound to it, almost like a hydraulic pump. But the transmission seems to be operating just fine and very strong. could it be that the belts are worn or maybe low on oil? the bottom of the machine seems to be pretty clean and the inside is just dusty and not really oily or greasy.

I have another 142 from 58-59 but that has been in storage for the last 8 years and honestly I don't even remember what that sounds like as it needed restoration when I got it.

Maybe a noisy pump?

Yes, more likley a noisy pump, run the washer in agitation with the pump belt off.

 

It could also be a noisy motor try running the machine with both belts off.

There is a chance the Maytag still has a pot metal pump in it. John's thoughts on checking for the noise with the pump belt off is good to ensure the motor is fine, but at this point if a poly pump isn't in place, I'd replace the pop metal pump now.

Thank you for the suggestions. It does indeed have the pot metal pump in it! I’ll unhook the belt tonight and play with it a little more.

Pulled the belt off of the pump pulley and the machine is as quiet as can be. I have another pump for it so I’ll be sure to change that out before I start using it. Thanks for the help!

The next challenge is servicing the halo of heat dryer. Seems as if a squirrel has tried to make a nest in the blower housing. Puts a whole new meaning to the term “squirrel cage” doesn’t it? From what the seller told me the dryer does run (not surprised) and he ran it for about a minute so we shall see.
