Now that we have the W1 setup and running. I found a seller in Germany that will ship me the empty bottles to use our own detergent. Would having more than one bottle for phase 1 make sense? i.e. one for detergent and one for water to use during the maintenance cycle when switching detergents? I cant bring myself to pay $20 for Miele's cleaning twindos bottle when it is just water.

I am also wondering if having more than one bottle for detergent makes sense? I assume if I want to switch detergents I would just rinse out the twindos bottle when it's empty and refill?

If you want to switch detergents frequently, you would want multiple cartridges plus an empty spare one.

Keep in mind that switching detergent would need you to flush the system and then reset all the dosages.
So just finding one thing and setteling for that would seem the best option...

Thanks henene4,

I live in a house with 8 females. The current laundry room has no less than 8 different kinds of laundry detergent. It is why I wanted the TwinDos. They like to change the "scent" from time to time. I was hoping to eventually run all of the bottles we have now through the TwinDos refillable cartridges. The younger girls always seem to use way too much soap. I thought with TwinDos they could buy a half gallon of what they wanted at the store, put that in a TwinDos bottle and use it until it's empty. THEN they get to put something else in if they want. This way I don't have partial containers of detergent sitting around.

I personally like the un-scented soaps, but that isn't usually what gets used. Just getting rid of all of the bottles will be a HUGE cleanup. No more caps partially screwed back on to get knocked over (which runs under the washer and then DAD has to move the washer to clean under it.).

Right now We have Tide, Tide with Fe-breeze, Tide Pure Clean, Method (Three scents) along with a few others. Since we have the TwinDos now they are all using that and say they like not having to measure. The Phase 1 that came with the washer is a little over half empty. I would like to use up all of the other stuff we have sitting around, but through a dosing bottle so it's not being over used.

I guess I will get two Phase 1 and one phase 2 empty bottles. I do see myself buying Miele's phase 2 going forward. It isn't used as much and there aren't many commercially available liquid oxy type bleaches here that work very well outside of a commercial size jug.

The price is ok. About $20 US per bottle. Shipping though is 39 Euro, which is a little steep, but I guess there is no way around it. I really wish Miele had not chosen to make their detergent the only official option in the USA.

Shipping anything out of Germany

Is dear; trust me I know. *LOL*

Quite frankly shipping anything out of most of Europe is rather pricey. One did catch a break when recently ordered a small part for my AEG washer. Home Spares uses some sort of bulk shipping to USA, then things are resent along it seems. So wasn't paying 30 Euros in shipping for a $10 USD part.

The bottles showed up today. Took 3.5 weeks to get here, but glad they are here. For those that would like to have them in the USA, I bought mine from Knaub Trading in Germany. Cheapest place I could find them and shipping was a flat rate.

Here are the links to the bottles in case someone else is looking for them.

Interesting...

... Bottle 1 and bottle 2 both have a detergent 'droplet' - and a fabric conditioner 'flower'...

I wonder if you can have differently fragranced fabric conditioners in BOTH bottles, dose detergent manually by the drawer, and select your scent on a whim?

Take it to mean the replacement bottles are universal, that is it doesn't matter what one puts into them, detergent, fabric softener, oxygen bleach or whatever. Only obvious difference is one canister has "1" while the other "2".

To make the switch between two different fabric softeners one supposes the washer must have programming capability that allows user to choose which container it draws from at the time.

Yes, the non-US models allow the user to set what's in the cartridge individually.

I was wondering why the user refillable cartridges weren't available in America. Perhaps Miele foresaw the scenario of a someone filling one of the cartridges with chlorine bleach...

IIRC OP or someone else in this thread mentioned Miele USA does have the empty cartridges in stock, but haven't been given the go ahead from Germany to begin sales.

As to what is the hold up, only Miele knows and thus far aren't telling. Could be something to do with legal/liability issues, different programming for North American machines, and or any other host of things.

What is clear and well known to Miele is that Americans are a rather legal happy lot, and laws tend to favor consumers. Just look at how Maytag was raked over the coals about "moldy" washers because owners of Neptune washers simply refused to leave the door ajar. Yes, there were other issues but design changes addressed; fact still remains you cannot leave a front loading washer shut up after use and not expect things to get whiffy inside.

For other scents and fabric types - I simply shut off the twindos and use powder, or another liquid.

Swapping twindos liquid on this thing frequently is a chore.

I find the kids fall in line when I leave them with the correct size scoop for one load vs the giant scoop that would allow them to overfill.

Money

Miele tried to push sales of their process chemicals for quite some time now no matter where.

Started with FragranceDos, TwinDos and CapDos, then they pushed the professional lineup.

At first, TwinDos machines here shipped with 2 empty containers as far as I know, then they changed that to a voucher to order them for free IIRC, then they even removed that so you have to buy them now.

Their new TwinDos machines without PowerWash now have TwinDos touch fields permanently labeled "Whites" and "Colors" with a big TwinDos decal above it instead of a "Dosing" touch field with a variable prompt in the display so you will be a) inconvenieced when using other detergent ("Wait, which was softner and which detergent?") and b) you will be reminded of TwinDos detergent every time you use the machine for the entirety of the machines life.
PowerWash and TwinDos combined are only avaible on M-Touch machines here now, starting at about 1400€, and they of course don't have that limitation.

Thing is these aren't nieche machines over here and NOBODY would EVER buy such a machine if they were locked to Mieles expensive detergent you can't even buy in stores.
So they have to keep the option of switching detergents open to even sell machines.
In the US the traget market is more nieche and more likely to be totally fine with ordering the refills via their Amazon Dash Button right next to the machine and having them delivered same day into their small "luxury condo" in the upper eastside. As long as laundry is as little hazzle as possible, the 30$ extra spent don't bother them.

Now their new G7000 dishwasher lineup has AutoDos that can ONLY be used with Mieles detergent discs which are like twice as expensive as brand detergent tablets or there abouts.
And constructing an empty refillable disc for off the shelf powders wouldn't be hard. Adding the programming necessary isn't hard either, only thing you'd loose would probably be load and soil based dosing, but even that could probably be implemented.

Wait for the G7000 to FLOOD luxury kitchens when they come to the US. So many people would love the idea of not even having to bother with STARTING the dishwasher.
Get the Miele app, setup the wifi connection, connect machine, setup the time schedule for AutoStart, pop in the disk and you are done for the month.
Just load dishes through the day, then unload them every day when you come home from work.
Once a month your phone alerts you to change the disk and while doing that you clean the filter and refill salt and rinse aid as well.
Spending an hour an month and no bother anymore.
The rich US folks will love that.

Here in Germany they now even have a high class food delivery system for people owning a "Dialoggarer". Just shove in the food, set as described and done is your restaurant grade dinner, as easy as a normal microwave ready meal.
Sure, more expensive, but if you spend 8000€ on an oven that bit of money will not bother you the least bit.

Oh, and they rent out washers ("BlueHorizons").
The washer is WiFi connected and tracks how many loads you do. TwinDos detergent is included IIRC and shows up automaticly.
3 tarifs:
S at 4,99€ per cycle
M at 9,99€ a month plus 2,99€ per cycle
L at 49,99€ a month with 250 cycles a year, after that each cycle is again 2,99€
49,99€ activation fee
24 month contract that automaticly lengthens by a year if you don't terminate 3 months before the period ends
No cost for repairs as long as not caused by you
New machine every few years (theoreticly)

They even sell f******g coffee with their coffee makers now!

I guess they perfected every appliance in their eyes by now, so they were searching agressivly for more growth potential.
And man do they try...

These European empty/blank cartridges do not fit in my US machine.

@ UncleDave
Yes, this was discovered and posted about in a newer thread. Miele designed the US machines so the empty twindos bottles will not fit in the USA machines. This is why the new design TwinDos bottles have an indent on the end that is inserted into the washer.

I have since switched to just refilling an empty Phase 1 or Phase 2 bottle using a funnel. The plunger in the "spout" is easy to push down with a small funnel. I then just pour in Tide or whatever I want. I stick to runny and not thick liquids.

The "factory" Phase 1/Phase 2 bottles last for 10-15 fills before the one way air valve gives out. You can tell when this happens because the bottle looks like it is being crushed. This is due to detergent being removed by the twindos system and no air making it into the cartridge to offset the volume removed.

I suppose I could just use a needle or something to poke a small hole in the top of the cartridge to let air in, but then there is a leak issue when refilling, etc. Just easier to buy a new Phase 1 or Phase 2 full cartridge when needed. Costs the same as the empty from Europe and you get detergent along with it.

If these are designed to be used in another country I don't think they will fit.
