According to what I could find out, Tontine shades were made of fabric coated with Pyroxylin, which is a nitrocellulose compound used as the base for DuPont Duco finishes and other lacquers.

the nitrocellulose coumpound would make the fabric flammable!!But those shades sure looked nice and worked well!Remember these were sold well into the 70's!Beleive there was a change to a vinyl based fabric treatment after that-the replacement was good, too!

My Mom used Pride, it smelled kinda like gasoline to me. I remember that it dried to a haze that she wiped off. I think it was better than Pledge spray.

Aladdin desk lamp

I have one exactly like in the ad. According to my parents, it belonged to my dad's father, who moved in with us when I was a couple months old. I hope I still have the shade, as I took it off at some point in time to use a floodlight bulb in it.

My mom always used Johnson's Pride wax on our wood furniture as long as it was made. I have a couple glass bottles, and one still has a little left in it. The bottles are exactly alike, but their is a slight difference in the labels.

What do they mean....rinse or don't rinse?  This ad is way much older than I am so I'm missing something.

Back in 1950's

launderess's profile picture
When P&G was still battling to get housewives hooked on Tide and away from soap for washday, some bright blub in marketing came up with the "no rinsing" required concept.

As we all know laundry washed in soap must be rinsed at least thrice or at best twice. Otherwise all dirt, suds and other residue wouldn't be removed and one ended up with "tattle-tale" grey laundry.

Tide being a synthetic detergent didn't have the same issues as soap on wash day, so *someone* concluded things didn't need to be rinsed.

Adverts one has seen for this "no rinse" Tide seemed always to target wringer washer owners. That may have been because unlike those with fully automatic washing machines owners of such semi-automatics still were tied to rinse tubs and doing multiples of that process.

www.automaticwasher.org/c...

When you consider how high sudsing Tide detergent was then (and until rather recently for that matter) one wonders if even one rinse would have been enough.

OTOH....

So much fun looking at these modern living advertisements. Please don't wear heels on a step stool. Oh and of course that add would be banned in today's PC world. :-)

Lady on step stool

Well, she does appear kind of ghostly. Maybe she met her demise earlier by wearing high heels while on the step stool.
