While staying in Wiltshire, I came across a derelict building containing a 7142A Autowasher Deluxe (along with a Flatley electric clothes airer and a Newhome Cabaret gas cooker. The owners of the building have, according to a neighbour, left the place to rot for over 30 years. I have accordingly taken the Bendix into protective custody and am alerting this forum in case anyone wants it. Unfortunately, the top is somewhat rusty, and the bottoms of all side panels have a fair bit of rot, the main bearing is pretty grumbly, and the rubber door boot is torn, so it may be a goner. Also, the front panel of the detergent drawer cracked off the moment I pulled it - it may be that it could be glued back, I don't know. Here is a photo of it enjoying its first sight of broad daylight in 30 years...

Just to let you all know, unless I can make an arrangement with my host here, this machine must be gone by the morning of Friday 2nd November, and if I have to take it to the tip, so be it... send me an email at rjwharrold@gmail.com or phone 07305 079870. I would prefer to let the Bendix go to an existing member of the forum who will be brave enough to restore it or at least enable another Bendix to live with parts from this.

Just to let you all know that "servischris" has first dibs on the 7142A, and Al (Vacbear) has second dibs on it in case Chris baulks at the state of the cabinet. I have plugged (though not plumbed) the machine in. The timer advances, the motor powered straight up, the drum turned smoothly - this machine wants to work! If the cabinet can be fixed, it is eminently restorable... I reckon it is a tribute to the quality Philco were capable of then that this machine is still functioning! The only thing stopping me plumbing it in in place of the Beko here is the torn door boot...

The 7142A was collected by Servischris this morning and will hopefully be restored. The cabinet is in a poor state, but it broadly works.

Little update

So the machine needs major cabinet repairs, tub removing and sealing up (got fresh ideas for this), the motor needs re wiring or a new motor, new pump req, new steam vent hose, new door gasket and filter gasket (have somewhere), new heater neon (have somewhere), a timer indicator needle will have to be made but that’s just a little plastic strip so a milk bottle top might do for that. On the plus the drawer front has been repaired and re attached. It looks perfect head on but the sides are another story.. Xmas project when I’ve got some time off I think.

Are there any other surviving 7142s? Chris and Phil seemed to think not. Glad to have helped save something old and rare, anyway!

Doesn't appear to be any about so its a rare one and glad you took the time to save it and pass it on, this as important to all us collectors as actually owning it, we cant do everything …

I remember the similar Philco Cyclotron which was sold here, that was actually the first washer I ever plumbed in for a friend who had just got married and had her mums old washer.

Sorry I'm late too this thread

There is another, along with Kris, we have one of these bendix machines, not sure of the model number, but it has the red progress indicator and a 500rpm spin. I doesn't have a locking door interlock, just a micro switch, plus a label keep hands out until spinner stops, I believe this dates it to 1973 or earlier.

The problem is the drum has rusted in the usual places, motor mounts etc, so it's just stored until one time is available. I did have a go, but it's not the easiest to work on as the tub has to come out through the top of the cabinet, so Chris will be interested in your fresh ideas for this.

Mathew
