Does anyone have any information about this switch-around?

Short answer is no.

I have an 9806 and the tub design is different from the 9800. The 9800 has a poured concrete balance ring that is totally incorporated in the tub, like all older Maytags. On the 9806 the balance ring is fit on to the tub and stamped in, it has a plastic base that mates up with the outer tub cover, which on the 9806 is plastic as opposed to metal like the 9800.

Thank you, what I also needed to know was could the 9800 tub hold and wash more than the 9806 because the "usable" tub space is SHORTER and it also looks NARROWER

Just had a thought, the 9800 and 9806 tub design styles are different but, if the 9800 and 9806 are the same LENGTH (with the balance ring) couldn't it fit in the 9806 outer tub...since the center holes size are the same DIAMETER right

Hey Nova, I see from your collection that you have the two washers I need to create my new DIY'er project...which are the 1985 Maytag A712 and the 1996 Maytag LAT9806A washers...my plan is to combine the two

...I'm searching for the LAT9806 and I want to swap out the Orbital trans and replace it with the *Quiet-Dependable trans (long stroke)...and, I want to remove the LAT9806 inner tub and replace it with the *Extra Large Capacity (2.96 cu ft) 16 pounder A712 & LAT9800 washtub (you can wash a load of clothes using up to 23 GALLONS of water) I measured the gallons...I want the LAT9800 inner tub specifically because it has *DOUBLE self-cleaning lint filter screens at the bottom of the tub...I'll be using the *"MIGHTY" Power-fin Agitator (built-in filter) COMBINED with the screens creating a "TRIPLE-Action" lint removal system

...now I visually (photos) examined and compared the outer tubs of the A712 and LAT9806, the obvious differences, as you know, is the metal top cover that screws on and the other plastic top cover snaps on...the A712, LAT9800 and LAT9806 inner washtubs are all the SAME length---15 3/4" to 16" TALL inner tubs, the width, are supposed to be 21" WIDE...however, earlier today an eBay auctioneer told me the LAT9806 inner tub he is selling, measured (21 1/2") wide and (16" long)...which means the LAT9800 inner tub should very well be able to fit and work inside the LAT9806's outer tub

...forgive me for comimg across a little pushy, but you're the guy that can actually COMFIRM whether or not the LAT9806 and LAT9800 inner tub interchange is possible
I'm not asking you (he-he-he) but, I could know absolutely sure before I find and buy the LAT9806

Here is a pic of the LAT9800 inner tub...

Im going to refer to the inner tub as a basket and the outer tub as the tub.

Well,

The 9806 I have infact does have the "self clean" filters at the bottom like the 9800. Beekeyknee did something like this before and he just sprayed over the filters with silicone as him, like I, dont believe they do anything.

While dimensionally they may look like it will fit, again, it wont. On the 9800 the balance ring at the top of the basket is curved and is designed to act as a clothes guard to prevent items from going in to the outer tub. The metal tub cover is supposed to have close clearance with the basket, more or less like a seal to block clothes. The tub on the 9800 is also lightly flared at the edge so the tub cover clamp and rubber seal have a place to sit and mate to.

ON the 9806, the tub flare is more pronounced and if I remember correctly has detents in it to allow the plastic clamps to slip in and lock on the tub. Furthermore, the basket, as I said before, has a precast balance ring that is stamped in to the basket. The precast ring is cast in a plastic mold, and this plastic makes up part of the clothes guard for the 9806 machines. This is the key difference, you need the 9800 basket, tub, and tub cover to make a proper seal to prevent the clothes from going over in to the tub, and same thing with the 9806, none of these are interchangeable. They're not interchangeable as the tub flare, the clearances between the balance ring and covers etc wont match if you try to interchange.

Lastly, if you did decide to swap the tub, tub cover, and basket from the 9800 chassis in to the 9806, it still wont fit right as the lid opening hole is much larger on the 9806, it is not a perfect circle like on the 9800, its more of a D shape.

Personally I love the 9806 and I think it is a fantastic washer, Id leave it the same and keep both the 9800 and 9806 as is. I also believe the 9800 has the orbital drive, do you have a long stroke transmission?

So, the main reason why it would not fit is because the A712 and 9800 basket clearance between the balance rim and tub top cover may not be close (tight) enough. Or, it's so tight that the curved edge of the balance rim sets against the cover's overhang edge
The BL is the 9806 basket is too small...(can not understand why Maytag downgraded to a 2.5 cu. ft basket) the biggest washload you'll get is only going to be using (20 gallons)...the basket usable capacity was decreased...you can not wash as big as loads as you would in the A712 and 9800 baskets

The tubs, baskets, and tub covers on the 9800 and 9806 are 100% different and cannot be interchanged.
