Question:  Who was Mrs. Helen Tangen?

Hint:  Featured in a November 1958 ladies' magazine.

Without going to the Internet, I will rely on my poor old memory; didn’t she have something to do with clothes dryers? I seem to remember a post here a long time ago about it..?

Todd,

That's pretty good!  She was the Hamilton Home Service Director.  Saw this ad this evening while reading through a Better Homes and Gardens and wondered if the name would ring a bell with anyone here.

Sorry, no prize associated with this quiz.

Thanks for the Picture!

I didn't remember her name, but I remembered her holding her hands and arms in that pose. It's not as dramatic as the Sheer Look pose, but distinctive. Funny when you think about how Frigidaire made no bones about knowing they were selling to men who actually made decisions on major purchases; think of the woman in the aqua negligee in the ad for the 1960 Custom Imperial washer with the little boy dressed as a cowboy. Helen Tangen's outfit is not very flattering, but she is a home economist whose job it was to help women who bought the appliance, not a model, so I guess she could not upstage her audience.

What they say about the air streams is valid, but I doubt that many owners were thrilled with having to get down so near to the floor to remove and clean the lint collector. The collector had two surfaces, not readily apparent when it was pulled out partway so some people only cleaned the readily visible top surface and ignored the collecting surface on the underside UNTIL the reduced air flow and resulting higher temperature caused the high temperature fuse to trip and the dryer would not operate.  A service call was needed to reset or replace (in models with the fusible link) the fuse and show the user how to completely clean the lint screens in the lint collector.

Tom,

The word that came to mind for me was "matronly".

Yes, a genuine Home Economist, probably with a love of baked goods as well as Carrier Currents.

"Matronly" is also how I'd describe Julia Kiene, Westinghouse home economist for many years. Her picture in my '53 range book always reminds me of actress Madge Blake (Mrs. Mondello on "Leave it to Beaver".

As an aside, Madge Blake was also Aunt Harriet on "BATMAN."

With all the stuff Larry Mondello pulled past his mom, you can see how so much got past Aunt Harriette.

Norge/Wards had a similar dryer vent design for a a few years (early to mid-60s?) where one had to stoop down to the floor in order to clean the lint filter. Although it was cumbersome, those lint filters were huge and captured a lot of lint!

Madge Blake also made a brief appearance as the woman television reporter in "The Solid Gold Cadillac"...a most wonderful movie with a feel-good ending. Miss Judy Holliday at her very finest.

I loved the way her rise in stature was subtly illustrated by her moving up from a little aluminum manual electric perk to an electric vacuum coffee brewer, a Knapp  Monarch, I believe.

In this movie and the Day the Earth Stood Still, I like the scenes of Washington, D.C. from the mid 20th Century.
