Three of the washers in this All advertisment were just like one's members of my family owned. My Aunt Imogene owned a Westinghouse Slant Front and my Aunt Louise owned a Norge Timeline just like the ones in the front row. And my maternal Grandma owned a GE FF like the one in the middle of the back row. Grandma used ALL, but Aunt Imogene used Dash and I’m not sure what detergent Aunt Louise used, probably whatever was on sale.

I always paid close attention to everyones appliances, especially their washers.

Eddie

I think that GE in the picture was just before Filter Flo, but I'm not sure.

I sure identify with scoping out everyone's laundry equipment and from even before I could read, Consumer Reports was a picture magazine for me along with the washing machine ads in the shelter magazines we got. When mom would take me to the grocery store, I would go sit on the bottom magazine shelf and look at pictures of appliances in magazines.

Love this ad today. Sure wish we had that many choices of washers today!!! Remember the first time I smelled All in use and it was wonderful! If I had to describe the scent today, maybe a little lime hint to it. Is that what you all remember it smelling like? We should start a thread on what the older detergents smelled like, many here are too young to remember. Alas, my mother was a dyed in the wool Tide and Oxydol believer, and little else. Always thought Tide was a little too sweet in smell for my liking, luckily Mom hung out the wash and the scent dissipated some. Lol!

I agree whole heartedly with you all, I'd scope out the relatives, friends, and neighbors washers and detergents too. Found it amazing everyone's laundry rooms / areas smelt different! Seriously. No two were the same. Had an Aunt that owned a slant front Westy, my paternal grandmother had a Fridgadaire unimatic, and a friend had Norge Timeline (always complained it didn't wash big enough loads), but most of the family was Kenmore's or Maytag's. Mom's favorite washers were probably SQ's, with the strong thrashing of the agitator and overflow rinse.

Anyone?

Barry

A neighbor for whom I babysat the three boys had a pair of Westinghouses, the early 60s slant fronts, and she bought the "Home Laundry" size box where the whole top opened up. What was it, 20 lbs? The whole basement, both the finished red room and the back part were redolent with the Dash perfume.

Hi.

That GE is not a Filter Flo. That is the first washer I remember as a child growing up

Left Dial was the Wash Temp. Hot, Warm and Off. Right Dial was the Cycle Dial. Started at 12 minutes and marked down to 2. In the center was a flat Green Bar that was the Water Saver. It did have the Suds Kill a minute or so into the first After Wash Spin. And the last Spin was labeled "Dry".

The pump during the Wash had a very Thorat-ee sound.

Handsome Machine. With the Gold Backsplash Accent and the strip that said "Automatic Washer".

Thanks for the clarification Tom and Eddie about the GE in the back row. After I posted I looked again, and it doesn’t have the same look as the first FF, which is what Grandma had.

They moved into a new tracked home in 1956 that was all electric, with a GE combo in the kitchen next to the DW. All the new owners had problems with these combos, so GE gave them all an new FF set, they took the guts out of the combos, but left the front of the machines in place, so they were non functional phantom GE combos. so the owners wouldn’t have an unfilled space in their new kitchens.

Eddie, that is very interesting information.  Thank you very much.

I also remember how noisy the pump was in our neighbor's 1960 GE when the Water Saver feature was used.  It had no water to circulate and gargled and gurgled all through the agitation periods except for the first 5 seconds when it threw up what was in the collector basin.
