This is a very valuable ad with the photographs of the machines, some quite rare, bearing their names. If there is some way this can be saved as a reference tool, it should be saved. I don't know how well the photographs could be saved from a "print screen" command because they are a little vague to begin with, but I hope some of these pictures of early styles of obscure machines, especially the Beam machines, can be saved. Many of the reports in old testing magazines did not include pictures of the more obscure brands if they reported on them at all.

Saving

At least on a PC running windows 7

Open up the picture of the day
Point the mouse at the picture
Right click and from drowm down "Save Picture(image) As"
Browse to the folder you want to save it to

And you are done, it saves as a JPG and in this case at least (in my PC) it is a nice clear image

I agree what a great treasure this ad is. I don’t recall ever seeing a compilation of all the Tide ads like this before. Very cool.

Frigidaire absent?

Am i overlooking them, or is Frigidaire conspicuous in their absence?

Frigidaire missing?

Not all manufactures packaged Tide in their machines in those days. Although Tide was a great cleaning detergent, it was VERY high sudsing. Of course front loading automatics like Westinghouse and Bendix did not recommend Tide. But a few top loading automatics like Frigidaire and General Electric likewise did not recommend Tide.

Can anyone say "suds cake"?

Truth be known, Kenmore and WP machines did not handle Tide's suds too well either. Neighbors burnt out the motor of their '58 Lady with Tide. I found that out when I mentioned the box of All in their cupboard. Tide's alkalinity ate up a lot of machines, too. When a friend got her new Hotpoint washer, the man who delivered it said not to use Tide because it corroded the machine. My mother was rare in double rinsing almost all loads and service men used to remark how free of corrosion her machines were.

1962 Frigidaire

A box of Tide was packaged in our '62 Frigidaire Custom Deluxe.

There's two brands in there that I've never heard of... Barton and Marquette.

Have never really liked Tide Powder

Well aside from scent of old school versions.

Tide powder always left my washing feeling "hard" and crusty. Left a white film/residue in laundry sink after water drained. All this besides being incredibly high sudsing.

Don't ask me how it happened, but I do remember a number of boxes of Tide that had broken open in new machines, mostly Frigidaire, . This was a super-high volume store. I never saw any new appliances delivered to a customer's home in a box, regardless of what those old advertisements show. They were all uncrated at the store first. The Frigidaire washers I remember had this big, heavy cardboard collar to keep the tub from moving, but still accidents happened. The store unboxed all console color televisions and tested them prior to delivery too. Most of those were RCA Victor. Several were DOU...defective on unpacking.

Launderess, you are absolutely right about Tide being high-sudsing. I remember my mom tried it in our ‘63 Custom Deluxe Frigidaire and nearly had a stroke with all the over-sudsing. She switched to All and was much happier. My grandmother preferred White King-D in her BOL ‘62 Wards Signature machine and never had sudsing issues.

.

AMC
Wizard (Western Auto)
Coronado (Gambles)
Firestone
Barton
Marquette
Zenith
Ambassador

All were Beam/Franklin. You could also argue that Speed Queen had a lot of Beam parts and should be included on the list.

We almost never bought Tide, always Dash or All depending on which one was on special when needed. I used to rejoice when a box of Cheer or Tide came in the door and always loved the suds oozing up around the lid of the GE Filter-Flo.
