We're eventually going to get a new built-in dishwasher to replace the Evil 1987 GE-built Tappan that died on us here a few months ago, which one is the best, a MOL GE dishwasher or a MOL Whirlpool dishwasher, and which one was higher rated by Consumer Reports?

Why only those two brands? Personally, I'd opt for a GE PDW7800 or for SS interior, PDDW8200.

if you're going with a tall tub, you MUST go GE. Their wash system is simply superior in every way.
However if you have your heart set on Whirlpool, i highly suggest looking for their standard tub machine.

Said it before, say it again

I am very happy with my lower-midline GE portable.

Quiet, cleans well, good with water use.

tbolt25-- I sent some dishwasher ratings from Consumer Reports to you via the e-mail address listed in your profile. Hope you find it helpful in your hunt for a new DW.

MOL Kenmore with Smartwash. Not tall tub but it cleans wonderfully.

I'm very satisfied with my TOL Kenmore Elite. The TurboZone feature is great and the adjustable reack is a lifesaver. You can also take out the top rack if needed.

Jason, dishwashers like that aren't offered anymore. Pretty much tall tubs.

Jason that MOL Kenmore (1603/1703) is a tall tub design, I would recommed and whirlpool product and/or Kenmore made by Whirlpool (DO NOT BUY A FRIGIDAIRE or Kenmore manufactured by Frigidaire which would be most kenmore models under $399) I have sold very little G.E. dishwashers because almost everyone that I have sold has either come back or has been repaired multiple times. They have almost no comparable features to Kenmore/Whirlpool. take a look at the KM/ 1603/1703:
Price: 488.88
Smart wash, quiet gaurd 4, Nylon coated racks, adjustable top rack with adjustable tines etc.

GE GLD5860LSS: Price $499.99

No sensor wash, Quiet power 2, plastic coated racks, no adjustable racks or tines. Its essentially the same price but it has no comparable features and the reliablity of the newer GE's arent very good at all.

Id say go with Bosch, but our Bosch just took a dump only after 3 months and the tech says that its un-repairable. But we are getting a nicer dishwasher ;) Ill just say that it has 3 racks :)

I know somebody who replaced a Bosch about 3 years old. Pump went bad, quoted $425 to repair. They were gonna do it, but got tired of waiting after a month for the serviceman to get the part.

3 racks

TOL KitchenAid? Maytag? I really like the idea of a 3rd rack for utensils in the KitchenAid alot, especially when I bake.

Indeed, but it is an original Miele idea and the best thing they've ever done for their dishwashers. Apparently (from reading at THS) the Kitchen Aid cutlery tray is a poor rip off of the Miele version. But yes, when it comes to the cutlery tray ours is great...

...talking of which in my experience this Miele dishwasher my parents have is the best ever (cleans everything even stuff you wouldn't think would come out clean); and seeming as they can be had for as little as £350 here in the UK there's no other way really... however I've heard that they are quite pricy in the USA!

Yes, the dishwasher that I got is the KUDU02FRBL. Its not as quiet as the Bosch (51 db, Bosch was 48). We Finally got one on display at work and I fell in love with it! It just feels so much better built then the Bosch.

Plus it has the "blue" lighting and a hard food disposal!

I cant wait for it to get here, and run a Maiden Bob Load® through it!

End Hijack

Hard Food Disposal

The other night we were having crab for dinner and some of the shells were still on the plate, but we knew our dishwasher had this useful feature. About 2 minutes into the cycle, I hear this scary buzzing noise coming from the wash module, which really freaked me out, because I had never heard the disposer operate before, even when there were large egg shells in the water. Anyway, it did it's job and the shells were flushed down the drain. Also it is extremely quiet when it fills.

BTW, does anyone know if my QuietGuard 7 model comes with a bottom insulation pad, because it didn't, and I read somewhere that it should. I also think that my machine was tested at the factory.

Any QG should have the foam pad between the base and motor.

The disposal is also not supposed to make the mentioned noises. If it continues, Id get service out there!

Actually, I mean the insulation that is packaged in the tub that you have to put under manually, and the buzzing noise was only there for a couple of seconds. It wasn't that loud, but noticeable. It was kind of like adding the noise of an electric hair trimmer to the dishwasher noise.

Just push START

Bobby, thanks for the info. I didn't know it was a tall tub. I guess since the top rack is adjustable. I have the top rack in its UP position because sometimes plates can get hung up on the upper arm if it's low. But if it's in the top position, I can't wash wine glasses (no, I don't drink wine, I drink sparkling grape juice).

I always use Normal wash, hi-tech wash, heated dry. Put a Cascade 2-n-1 pack and push Start. Next morning, clean dishes.

If you want dirty dishes cleaned...

Go for the deluxe Whirlpool standard tub model. Too many people complain to service techs that their new KA or WP Tall Tub just does not perform like their old one. The TT does not have enough force behind the water nor does it use enough water to give dependable results day in and day out. If you rinse everything before putting it in the dishwasher, you might be happy with a tall tub, but pulsing the pump off and on to shoot water higher and with more force does not solve all of the problems and the drying is not that good either. The tall tub WP & KA have a smaller pump than the regular tub WP dws, use less water and cannot spray it as well. Either the top of the line standard tub WP or the model right under it will give you the best performance and fewest problems if you decide to go with a Whirlpool product.

Tom, There is ONE PowerClean built-in (DU930) and ONE portable PowerClean (DU940) by Whirlpool. The other's are dura-wash based lower models. Also the Estate TUD6750. Sears has model # 13592 (white) & 13599 (black), 13594 (Bisque); and 13593 (Stainless & Black) These are the ONLY Real, TRUE, Legitimate PowerCleans marketed today!!

Other than the long wash times (about 100 minutes is usual), I've been very pleased with my Bosch 43C. I got it for all of $360 at Sears - it was a customer return that hadn't yet made it out to the Outlet. List was something like $550, but I think it's probably worth even that.

Prior to that I had a MOL Frigidaire that was a perpetual disappointment. Really shoddy rack roller design - the upper rack would fall off its tracks if you looked at it the wrong way. Plus various parts kept on failing. Initially I regarded this as an opportunity to learn how to repair the machine. Finally when the main pump went out I ditched the bitch and got the Bosch. I second the advice to steer clear of Frigidaire dishwashers.

Of course I also picked up a '58 KA portable, which washes about as well as the Bosch, in about 45 minutes. However it uses about twice as much water and probably more energy as well. The KA is more finicky about loading and the Bosch probably does a more thorough job of sanitizing (internal heater). I also have a KA 17A built-in in storage... seems to be in perfect shape. They don't build them like that any more.

We finally bought a dishwasher!

We finally bought a brand new Whirlpool model #DU980PWPQ built-in standard tub dishwasher from Sears, is that one any good?

model # correction

I mis-posted the model # of that Whirlpool dishwasher we bought, instead of posting it as DU980PWPQ which is incorrect, I should've posted it as DU930PWPQ.

Still very good. I figured it was the 930 since a 980 is no longer produced.
