In 2019, I'm hoping to reunite a couple of sets... I really, really miss my 59 Frigidaire dryer and the motor on the 57 GE Clothes Conditioning dryer just failed on me. Both washers are still in service and anxiously awaiting their mates...

There are sooooooooo many fabulous old sets that were not only fun, but entertaining to use! Any of the old Kelvinator or ABC o matic sets definitely fall into this category. Apex and Frigidaire also.

A Frigidaire 1-18 set. Preferably in Poppy or White. Speed Queen set with the banging solenoids as it switches from agitate to spin. Had to give up my A412 when I moved as my SO already had a washer and dryer in the house and moving what I did across country was NOT cheap

I’m pretty happy with my current, now 20 year old, Whirlpool washer and dryer but if I could have anything I would really like a gas version of my current dryer and a washer that has a hot wash warm rinse cycle. I also desperately want a Maytag wringer washer, I plan on keeping my eyes pealed for one this year.

Hmm, dream machines

any 50's Frigidaire, 60's Norge when they first switched to perforated tub, banging solenoid Speed Queen solid tub with a stainless steel tub, anyone's reliable Washer-Dryer combo machine, the list goes on and on. 60's Philco with the wobble plate, rare as hen's teeth.

Blackstone Dryers

blackstone's profile picture
About a dozen years ago, I sold 2 Blackstone dryers from our store, matching models for the 350 washer. One gas, one electric. They were new-in-box.

Somewhere in the archives are pictures of this discovery.

I wonder where they are now?

A local

house man. Example; Agadore Sparticus from the Bird Cage movie. My spouse lets me choose appliances, and vehicles. One of us is more book smart, one more mechanically inclined. He did help me replace our dryer drum rollers, idler, and belt last month. I needed help supporting the drum up higher so I could route the belt onto the motor pulley.

In regards to dryers, do spin dryers count?

Even though they weren't great performers, the industrial design of those Avocado Westinghouses was absolutely spectacular. Look at those control panels alone. And even that "Weigh-to-Save" lid was a stroke of marketing genius. I would have found that feature very handy. And I always loved Westy's "Jupiter-2" FS dispenser.

But those control panels...

Re Westinghouse top loaders

???? Why would you say they were not great performers, I think they were almost as good as a Norge or a Blackstone in washing ability, the main problem was the stupid designer put the pump on top of the motor so if it leaked it ruined the motor, other than that they washed like mad!

The best performers

in my opinion would be any Frigidaire before the jet cone agitator, any Norge after the solid tubs, and Whirlpool Kenmores, worst would be a Maytag, especially the small capacity.

Indexing Tub

washerlover's profile picture
I didn’t know that Westinghouse top loaders had the indexing tub (except I believe they manufactured for Montgomery Ward in the late 70s and I remember the indexing tub then).

So does the indexing concept improve washing ability? To me it seems like a gimmick and frankly makes me dizzy when I’m trying to watch the action!

My dream set hands down would have to be a 1968 Avocado Whirlpool Mark XII Model LTA 9925 w/ Suds-Miser, and matching electric dryer, all with the faux woodgrain front panels.  Photos are courtesy of Revvinkevin.

Westinghoouse Wash Action

lotsosudz's profile picture
Westinghouse always included the indexing tub as a part of their double scrub wash action. Personally, it ruined what I think could have been a very strong agitation, if only they had locked their tubs. Especially with the blue ramped agitator! It should have resembled The GE wash action, with their ramped agitator. Their filtration system, was very weak in comparison to the Filter Flos's. Just my 2 centavo's on the subject. P.S. loved their front loaders prior to WCI.
Hugs,
David

Westinghouse TL Wash Action

combo52's profile picture

Replay #25, you are right on the money David, WH TLers were never strong performers, when WH came out with TL washers around 1965-6 [ that they designed and built ] they must have known that WCI would buy them out a decade later as they copied the crappy Franklin TL washers with the worthless indexing tub, all to save the cost of a brake.
